Firstly I'm removing the anti-scuff sheet, to remove the sticky glue it's been suggested to use white spirit, is it simply a case of getting some on a cloth and wiping the blade with it till the glue is gone?

Secondly I want to give all the bats a pretty good sanding down, what sort of electrical sander would be good for this and what grit sizes would anyone recommend? Any links would be great!

Firstly, the glue residue, wipe with cloth soaked with white spirit, to soften the residue. Scrape away gentley with a sharp blade, and finally go over with another cloth soaked in white spirit to remove any remains of glue residue.

When bats are snaded in the factory they are belt sanded, but most people are going to have access to an orbital sander, either one that take a rectangular sheet of sand paper, or a palm sander that takes sanding sheeets that  are roughly triangualr in shape. Either will do a decent job.

You will need a selection of sandpaper grades, from coarse to fine. Start with something like 100 grade and work to finer grades. If you want a really smooth surface, finish with very fine wet and dry (obviously used dry on wood) You can get as fine a 600 grade with this.

Thanks for the quick response, as for belt/orbital sander i can get either for not a lot off ebay, which would you recomend ?

Probably an orbital sander, as it's easier to control, and a belt sander needs proper sanding belts.

With an orbital sander, you can use ordinary sanding sheets cut to size. A typical orbital sander takes 1/3 of a standard sanding sheet. You can also get pre cut sheets if you want.

I need to repair some cracks, one in the shoulder and one on an edge, has anyone tried using an epoxy resin rather than wood glue?

Wood glue will work fine, it is designed for wood after all.....

Its an edge crack, last time i glued it it broke again, is that just poor glue/poor glueing on my part ? I e-mailed Newbery about a refurb and they didn't get back so going to try it myself, thought an epoxy would be stronger and has some good charactoristics.

Clamp it, the glued joint should be stronger than the surrounding wood.

Such claims are usually based on a specific test, adhesives by nature are weak against peeling forces but are stronger for shearing forces. But generally most joining processes will be stronger than the two parent materials being joined.

Going to just use normal wood glue and then put a new anti scuff sheet over it and see how it holds.

It's got to flex as well as bond.
