Hi Guys,

Been doing repairs and referbs on bats for a while now and always fancied making my own.

Seeing some of the great work the lads on the forum have done has made me finally decide to have a go myself, hats of to everyone whos posted their creations on here, if mine looks half as good it will be a miracle. Am pretty much alredy set up with my tools from the bits and pieces i alredy currently do. However im thinking of upgrading my bench to something more heavy weight, then i think il be good to go.

Iv got a cheap part made kashmir cleft which seems to be a right of passage in the DIY bat process so im going to have a go with that in the following weeks. However id really like to know if anyones got any lower grade english willow clefts which they are looking to sell? As by the sounds of it i may be wasting my time using kashmir.

Also if anyone whos had a go themselves fancies passing on some advice which they wished theyd known when starting out im all ears lol.

I have a few lower grade clefts that can be handled and pressed for �50 posted, better to use English willow as it is a lot easier to shape than Kashmir. As for bat making you will find a few Pro's plus some good amateurs on here willing to share their tips.

mike i have a question if you got part made bats and had a good sander what would be the best way of finishing the bat how could i polish it up..

not after doing it well not yet but what machine/hand held to give the bat a good finish???

Unless you have a drum sander the finer paper works best by hand, the coarse can be used with a mouse or orbital electric one but the finishing needs to be by hand; in my opinion. The polishing would be best with a mop head and chalk/wax on a pillar like the drum sander, without then maybe use a furniture wax by hand and hand polish it.

i also saw a kind of kitchen sponge type thing that fine sanded the bat thought of one of them

Hi guys,

Been hacking up this kasmir cleft and have an okay ish shape to it but not great. I didnt draw an profile or anything just went for it as it was the process i was more bothered about than the outcome.

The bit I struggled with was the shoulders and shaping the handle what tools have people found the best to use when doing this? But i realised where iv gone wrong so really looking forward to getting some better willow and making a better go of it.

Also i found my bench impossible to work with it keeps moving making my plane jitter and my spoke shave struggles to remove any wood at all. Does anyone know where to get a decent heavy no frills bench? or have people generally made their own?
