Footwork
« on: July 23, 2010, 03:40:54 PM »

Just been watching some footage of Michael Clarke of Australia. It never ceases to amaze me just how incredible his footwork is. it never came naturally to me to me (footwork) and as I have learnt how to use my feet better my scores have improved and my batting has become more correct and effective.

What are your tips, hints and drills for improving footwork?

one thing I was taught was that getting your head in the right place is the most important thing. If you get your head in the right place your feet will follow.

A decent stance is obviously the starting point; head still and eyes level. Weight balanced between both feet and you need to be ready to move.

Really watch the ball, and work out line and length and then move to get your head over the ball.

I am so glad you used Michael Clarke as your example, those people who say Phillip Hughes is awesome are wrong (!) Clarke is the man.
Firstly away from cricket try some SAQ work with ladders, try to quicken up your feet.
second, as mortimer says, good footwork stems from wonderful balance, keeping your eyes level and head still.
It is really important that you let your eyes lead your feet, not the other way around. You are not getting your feet to the pitch of the ball, you are getting your eyes over the ball.
Finally as practice, using an old tennis ball practice by throwing it up and moving your feet to hit the ball ont he second bounce into some netting. not just through the offside, but through mid on too...
Sorry if I have repeated what mortimer has said above a little, but he is right!!

ive only ever been given 2 bits of advice regarding footwork:

- get the head right and the rest will follow
- dont premeditate

i think my footwork is good because i love my drives so obviously can get into position quickly/ to the pitch of the ball

i think the premeditation one is what gets club batsman out most - its really hard changing your stance when you have decided to play a certain shot regardless of the delivery. my coach says its the difference between the best and the rest.
