Somerset Chairman's XI helps West Bagborough CC celebrate centenary.
West Bagborough CC have been in existence for 100 years and as part of the celebrations the Club entertained a Somerset CCC Chairman's XI who proved to be worthy opposition in this closely fought contest.
Some glorious cricket was enjoyed against one of the most stunning back-drops in English cricket. West Bagborough nestles in the lea of the Quantocks and the famous hills frame one of the most picturesque grounds in the area.
The Somerset Chairman's XI won the toss and on an excellent wicket opted to bat and attempt to post a competitive total.
The opening pair Devon Conway (Natal Dolphins & South Africa) and Nigel Preston (Taunton CC & West Monkton) set about their task briskly. Conway scored better than a run a ball and treated the enthusiastic crowd to an array of shots which displayed his formidable talent.
Conway, who is one of Jimmy Cook's protégés is an 18 year old who is very highly rated and is spending the summer over in England playing for Taunton Deane CC in the WEPL Premier Division as well as Somerset Second XI.
However it was Preston who stole the limelight in the Somerset innings, bludgeoning his way to a very fine century, (his first in almost 20 years) which featured an amazing sequence of thirteen consecutive fours, before he retired on 106.
Preston held the Somerset innings together as partners came and went without overly troubling the scorers, with only Ed Nash with 26 and Dave Stephenson 29 making substantial contributions before the innings closed on 241 for seven.
For West Bagborough, Simon White took three for 64 from his allocation of eight overs, while Martin King began his spell with a wicket maiden ended with a highly creditable two for 27.
Tomkins and Garnett got the Bagborough reply underway solidly but some good fielding applied the pressure and wickets began to tumble. At the half way stage the 'Baggies' passed the 100 mark with four wickets down.
Kinger played a characteristically adhesive innings before finally departing for 31 after displaying a full range of strokes. He was ably assisted by several colleagues in particular the Baggie's overseas player Sanjay Hadapi who very elegantly constructed a fine innings of 52 despite having to play with a runner.
In spite of their best efforts West Bagborough eventually ended their innings on 212, giving the visitors victory by 29 runs. Matt Bulbeck was the pick of the Somerset bowlers taking three for 12 bowling mainly off-breaks.
Man of the match was awarded to Nigel Preston for his impressive innings on a truly memorable day.Proceedings drew to a close with a fine BBQ and great bonhomie.
Andy Nash the Somerset chairman congratulated West Bagborough CC on their own century and said that clubs like their's were the backbone of Somerset cricket and a fine example to all.
The Somerset Chairman also congratulated Martin King for his family's 97th year of service to the club - a magnificent achievement. Another great hundred lies on the horizon!
I was quite taken back about the comment of the wicket, being I felt as it was a "second hand wicket" (we used it on sunday and was slightly dug up at the ends, I had started making a new one but was informed to use the same one), also, I know our backdrop is stunning, but I think there are very more beatiful backgrounds to play cricket at around the country (coughBridgetowncough). I havent seen the full scorecard yet but I was told it was quite a strong XI, carl gazzard was playing
I had to laugh at my dad, all season he has moaned about not getting a bat to try out his mongoose, (which is funny, being he is the captain of our 2nds and he puts himself at 10!) so he then goes in at 6 and hits that 31....and I was suprised he managed to get a wicket madien in his first over! A great day for the club
