Which bat should I get?
« on: September 05, 2010, 10:59:43 AM »

I have managed to narrow down my choice of bats for next year. If anybody has either one of the two, please tell me what your general feeling about it is. I would also like to know who can fix me up with one at a reasonable price; as I live far away from both workshops. Many Thanks.

So many people have been "changing this thread for themselves".

Why these 2 choices out of interest?

Is it me, or do these 2 bats have very different profiles from each other?
Don't get me wrong....both Newbery and M&H have a reputation for high quality bats! But the Distinction seems to have a lower middle and more traditional profile but with larger edges than your 'normal' trad profile? And the Thruxton (I think?) has a higher middle with a lighter pick up?
So if this is the case, then I would go for whichever profile feels better for you?

was looking for a bat with thick edges

The M&H distinction has disproportionately small or "unimposing edges" as they're described on the M&H site. I believe that this is so that it can have a high spine and therefore middle at relatively lightweights and still maintain a nice balance.

The Distinction is tempting, i might just wait to check if a Thruxton XL comes out.

Also think about what weight you will be using!?
Some bats are better suited to lighter weights, and others better for heavier!
Certainly if you were going quite heavy then the Newberys are normally massive with huge edges.
So think about the weight you are using too?

I have used a Newbery Thurxtom SPS this season and it is simply the best bat I have used in the last couple of seasons.

The feel and balance is very good and the middle position suits my style of playing very well (both of the front and back foot). Some not so well timed shots went a long distance as well.

As a suggestion, I would say that you should select a bat based on its pick-up and feel and how you play. Maybe a Krakatoa or Icon or some other profile may suit you better.
