A bat that felt just right?
« on: October 22, 2008, 07:57:37 AM »

Typical question from me!

Have you ever had a bat that felt just right when playing with it but never managed to receate that feel?

Yes. I had a Puma Millichamp Original which was a beautiful bat. But never found a bat which offered the same feel.

However, lately I have had 2 bats which feel quite upto the Puma Millichamp. My custom made BAS Blaster and Screaming Cat Series I.

The unfortunate part is that I will have to sell all my bats to come over the sudden financial distress.

When I was in my teens (mid 90s) I had a County Reflex Limited Edition that felt like an extension of my arms (sounds stupid I know) and was an absolute rocket of a bat that I have struggled to replicate since. Don't think it was a coincidence that that was my most productive year with the bat and wish I could find one similar to try and get that confident feeling back!

Its in your head, take a crap bat and use it on a good wicket against wayward bowling with some good luck and you'll love it.

Take a good bat and get a series of low scores and you'll hate it.

If you buy a bat which feels good in the hands and feels good with the mallet then you should be able to tick that box and worry about other things.

There are only 2 things that are really important to me when getting a bat made, subject to having the choice of the willow, a good oval handle and a good pick up.

Yes I have, it was the first M&H Harlequin they sold, I got it 2 months before the stickers were made and played out of this world, fell to pieces before the middle of the season and have tried to copy the shape as much as possible because of it.

Have you still got it or was it really in proper pieces?

They took it in for about the sixth time and replaced it and never gave me back the original, I stood in the shop and argued but they claimed it had been binned. The 5 grain POS they gave me in Harlequin colours was meant to keep me away and it did. I gave it to a guy in the shop who was about to pay top dollar for one to show my disgust and prevent them from making a sale.

Norb, do not worry for I have gifts for you, well not gifts as I require some cash for them but a give away price. I have a Newbery Multibalance bat that is being cleaned up at the factory, I think you were interested in a counter balance bat. I also have to get you down there sharpish....

I would only buy bats if they felt right in my hands as that is my primary criteria so i wouldn't be able to single out a favourite on feel. But there have been a couple of bats that brought a lot of joy because I somehow found the middle with much greater regularity. One was an SS TON LE and the other was made by a small Indian batmaker called Matrrixx. Both had low middles but I have had other low middle bats that never matched these two. Could never figure out if it was in my head or something to do with batspeed.

Yep batspeed but in a roundabout sort of way and slightly more involved then just that...

Norbair, I like more involved explanations. How is it that all things being equal (profile, pick-up, not sure about the weight as I didn't weigh), with one bat I find the middle with much greater frequency? Or maybe all things were not equal? Which variable in this equation could have caused the difference? Just to clarify, I am not talking about ping or the spread of the sweetspot but the tight concentration of ball marks around the max willow thickness. Difficult to describe but let's see where this goes. Very interested in your analysis!
