Darren Sammy/Chris Gayle
« on: October 18, 2010, 01:54:48 PM »

Anyone else surprised by this?

Chris Gayle has been sacked as West Indies captain and replaced by Darren Sammy. The West Indies Cricket Board announced the decision when naming the squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.

"We are at the dawn of a new era in West Indies cricket and the selection committee has entrusted the challenging job of captaincy to Darren Sammy because it is believed that he has demonstrated the attributes of a leader of this diverse group of men," said Clyde Butts, the selection committee chairman.

I appreciate that Gayle is a contraversial leader and is a bit too horizontal - but surely there are more issues with the Windies Cricket board than Gayles leadership...

Seems Gayle has upset a few on the board, Darren Sammy was not able to hold down a regular place in the team was he?

I think its an odd decision, as you have said i think there are issues that should be sorted out prior to this as this wasnt really a problem, unless soemthing else is bubbling under the surface!

Sammy isn't that bazaar a choice as he has been captaining is island side to good effect, but even so - it will be interesting to see how he handles the likes of Gayle and Sarwin as well as the bowlers...

I think the issue is to do with the contract situation.

Gayle and Bravo have declined central contract which stipulate that a player has to always make himself available for the West Indies even if that means missing the IPL etc.

How can someone be captain of their country when clearly chasing money is more important than reprenting their country?

yeah i just didnt think gayle was doing too badly with the players he has. I cant see sammy doing any better..
yeah i think he could struggle getting the most out of the bigger players, but time will tell, he may be fantastic!

Gayle doesn't seem to have any time for test cricket - I can't see how Windies can improve as a test side with him as captain, thuogh having said that, with all other troubles alluded to, maybe he wasn't a bad choice in terms of a bit of stability

It seems an odd decision but I remember Chris Gayle saying a while ago that he isn't really interested in tests and prefers T20.... Probably the reason he turned down the central contract is so he can play tournaments such as the IPL...

It does appear to be all about the money.

But the WICB are second only to the PCB in terms of incompetence.

Didn;t Gayle (along with Pollard and Bravo) turn down a central contract? This was always on the cards, you can't have your skipper not centrally contracted

The England players only signed their contracts recently, from last April - they are always arguing about them, but do it behind closed doors through the PCA - so it is pretty common.

WICB have Butts in charge and the PCB have a Butt in charge ! (what are the odds on that ?)

Best thing that the WICB could've done. Gayle has no interest in being the captain of the West Indies and wasn't really an inspiring captain. Sammy, from the interviews I've seen, has all ways spoken well and is very enthusiastic.
