Find me tools!
« on: October 29, 2008, 11:37:38 AM »

Hi guys, I have a £50 amazon voucher to spend so I wondered do they sell batmaking tools on there!  :D

The only catch is it must be SOLD BY AMAZON and not another retailer via amazon as i cant then use my vouchers!

I saw this and wondered if it was anygood?  (Prob the worst one you can get lol!)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-633465-No-4-Plane/dp/B000LFTOE2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=diy&qid=1225278699&sr=1-3

All i want really is a batmaker to post either a list of tools required or even better links to the products on amazon  8)
Thanks very much!

There is probably more but this should get you going - pick and choose ... from my brain dump....

- English Style Drawknife [well that is what I use - if they sell old one's the steel is better] be careful one fell on my hand the other day and it wasn't pretty
- Something to shape shoulders and handle if required [spokeshave / rasp / subform / careful use of draw knife]
- For Concaving - No 4 or No 5 Travisher or Convex Clifton spokeshave some pic's attached [or round bottom plane]
- Smoothing plane / I also use a little block plane and thumb plane
- Something to sharpen tools with
- Good vice & protective vice jaw [thingys]
- A good sturdy bench - when you start shaving with your draw knife the bench will move :-)
- Sanding solution [hand sanding / power sanding / how are you going to sand the concave without pneumatic sanding drums]
- Sandpaper various grades to suit solution
- Binding material [& possibly how you are going to do it, you can hand bind]
- Grips
- Some soft lead pencils if following lines [an eraser :-)]
- A few lint free cloths for oiling

No worries you probably don't need all that stuff but it gives you an idea

Instead of starting a new topic I thought I'd add the question in here.

I am having huge difficulty sharpening my drawknife, I've tried waterstones, sandpaper and files but always end up with something that's sharp but not razor sharp.

Am I expecting too much and it's more about technique? Can I get it professionally done?

I believe you can get it professionally done - Chris easby said he uses oil stones or something although Norbair did post a product that he said was very good.
