Using grips to change handle type
« on: November 06, 2010, 09:12:55 AM »

I seem to remember a thread about using/modifying bat grips to change the bat handle from round to oval in feel. Am I going mad or can this be done?

Probably the old elastoplast trick would work best to create a more oval shape for the bottom hand.

yes - but only for the feel. When I have done this I have bought from boots some padded tape (http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Pharmaceuticals-Padded-Strapping-Tape-2.5cm-x-5m_1121261/?CAWELAID=551425800&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Engines-_-Google%20Base-_---_-Boots%20Pharmaceuticals%20Padded%20Strapping%20Tape%2025cm%20x%205m) and put two or three strips (what ever you want really) up the spin side of the handle and wrapped some cloth tape over the top, then I put half a single thickness grip over that at the bottom of the bat handle and my grip (double thickness chevron/matrix) over the top. It wont be as good as a proper oval handle but it will do a job.
If you are using a bat with a cheap Pakistani made handle, I would seriously consider getting it replaced with an English made handle.

The trouble with a handle swap is that you then need to cut off the ears and glue on new ones, then you have the problem of a smaller splice surface and that makes the handle more likely to come loose and loses power.

Maybe best to buy a bat with the handle shape you prefer to start with.

changing handles seems extreme!  I pretty much play with anything as long as it's not a thick handle. All the talk on other threads of what people do to their grips just got me thinking really.
