sehwags footwork

How does this guy go about batting? He has zero footwork but can play any shot and any ball

Same question here as well. He has one of most poor technique you can come across in cricket but I believe it's his hand eye coordination which is very good and is scoring him runs.

It's not actually a poor technique by any means. On his defensive shots he gets into line and even moves his feet at times. he backs away at times, but it's no different to driving inside out. He has an excellent eye for the ball, and importantly he is still when he's hitting the ball.

Sahwaq and Trescothic show the classic modern day batting. Against quick bowling on flat tracks they use their hand and head position to control the ball and their hand eye coordination to smash it, while against slow bowling they use excellent positive foot movement to get to the pitch of the ball, or to play right back.

What makes Sahwag so exceptional is that he can play the moving ball well too. This is because he changes the shot selection, pulling out the cover drive and the cut more when the ball is moving – and feeds off the bad ball better that many modern day players.

It is close to impossible to teach someone to play like this - however you can help people who do play like this - but typically the key is getting them to control themselves just enough to not give it away, but at the same time without inhibiting them. This is why the two batsmen mentioned above are so special.

It is no secret to say that Sahwag is my favourite modern player, the guy is a total enigma.

If I could find this article (cricinfo?) where the guy argued that sehwag actually didn't have bad technique. He came across fairly convincing - I think the overarching theme was that he always gets his head into position which is a key ingredient to hitting the ball.

If I can find it, I'll post it up.

EDIT: I misread - I thought you were talking about his technique. You were in fact only talking about his footwork. My bad.

Left Hook - I think there is a similar article written by Athers in either the Times or the Telegraph from a few years back explaining why their technique is much better that it at first seems.

It's funny how all pakistani fans claim Sehwag is a flat track bully, slogger etc, yet hailed Saeed Anwar was a masterful batsman. Anwar's footwork was even less than Sehwag's.

Sehwag's murdered all the best bowlers around, his technique is fine for how he plays. The blade in defensive is a straight as anyone could wish for.

It's my main concern with alot of English coaches I meet who try to coach the textbook not the player

Prime example is pieterson completely different technique pre settled England to now but was working so why change

Look at chanderpaul awful set up but was no.1 in world for a while

I think Chanderpaul at point of contact is pretty orthodox tho, just the stance is slightly odd

That's what I mean the text book says pick the bat up straight but bradman picked it up from gully it's not where you start it's the finished product

Not enough people bowl genuine bouncers to Sehwag, On the last tour of India Hoggard (not exactly rapid) had him caught behind fending bouncers a couple of times. Pitch it up and he will put you away all day long.

Problem with bowling bouncers at Sehwag is unless they're at his throat, he'll whack it over the slips.

Hilfenhaus got him with the short ball in the recent series
