Randomnize the bowling machine
« on: December 21, 2010, 04:52:57 AM »

Does anyone have any ideas of how to make a bowling machine a bit more random.
i was thinkimg that i should put small sprins on the back 2 legs of the machine and to leave the head slightly loose. im talking about the bola machine here.

i was thinking about setting up somthing similar to the pro batter aswell but alot less costly. i was thinking getting a projector and and a sheet onfront of the machine with a hole in it for the ball to come through

your thoughts guys?

Putting the springs under the bola legs could result in you getting something at head height no bounce.... The pro batter coincides delivery with video.  If you can work out how to get the timing with your approach, and it is way cheaper then you'll be able to market it.

As an aside, I thought the point of bola was consistent deliveries so that you could play a specific type of bowling over and again?

yeah i do want that but i also want the option of havine random lengths aswell. but if the springs where to be small th best i would get is a knee high full toss rite?

do you rekon there would be any other ways?

and also the auto feeder feeds the balls every 7 or 11 seconds wich ever option you choose so i could time it to that acordingly

If you're feeding it, you can lean and push on it pretty hard and it does vary it significantly.

Yeah we just have the feeder tilt the head back/forward to vary length

i wouldnt advise trying to pimp out a bowling machine that could throw down anything at you if your on your own! could go horribly wrong and no one will be around to help

I think the answer to your original question is no, no-one does have a safe way to do what you want to. It would be worth finding out which Bola you are using as well, because according to the website, the Professional version has an ‘Electronic Random Delivery Mode’ to allow batsmen to play against a variety of deliveries... so you may not need to do anything!

health and safety would have a field day if something went wrong with it at your cricket club...unless its your own private machine in your own back garden ???

Trying anything new or clever should involve a serious amount of testing in an empty net, i.e no batsman. Personally I would leave things be and live with it. Far too much could go wrong.

I know at my club we have both the yellow and red balls. Even set on the same delivery the two types of balls react differently.

Might no produce the complete different delivery you're looking for, but it could produce enough variety.

My experience with home nets (which is good as I use my mates loads) is that the area on a good length becomes pretty unpredictable after a bit of use (the concrete underneath the matting deteriorates) so that provides plenty of variation!
The Red ball/yellow ball idea will also work really well, although I find the red balls get dirty very quickly and become difficult to see unless your lighting is excellent. As Canners will testify the lighting in my mates barn is close to indifferent...
