Gray Nicolls Oblivion
« on: January 01, 2011, 03:41:22 PM »

As Santa Claus was nice enough to give me some money for Christmas this year, I thought I would treat myself a new bat. I saw the GN Oblivion and thought I would see how good these bats really are. After looking around, I thought I would go for the Oblivion Strike (Grade 3/4) as I did not want to spend £150+ on a bat. This bat cost £70 including postage via courier which I thought was a pretty good deal.

First Impression:
My first impression of this bat was the size of it. I asked for 2lb 9oz, and thats what I got, but with 36mm edges and a really high spine, I was pleasantly surprised. The only down side to this bat was the face being an image of the grains, which, to the untrained eye, looks excellent. If you are not bothered about the looks, then its brilliant.

Performance:
Having only just receiving the bat, I have not had a chance to use it, but with a few hits with the mallet and bouncing a ball on the bat, narrowly missing the lights and TV, it seems to perform surprisingly well considering its only a Grade 3! The bat seems to perform on most of the blade except near the stickers and right on the toe, so its sure to perform well regardless of your style of play.

Pick up and feel:
After playing some air shots in the living room, the bat picks up extremely well. It feels very nice in the hands with a nice thick handle and a white octopus grip. It does feel lighter than 2lb 9oz and it seems to feel nice when my imitation shots are played.

Overall thoughts:
To be fair, I was never going to receive a 15 grained bat for £70. But for the price, I think its a bargain. 36mm edges and a huge profile throughout. I think that the false face does give it a cheaper look to the bat, but if you dont mind how it looks, this bat is a beauty. Excellent stickers and they really are nice in real life. The Gray Nicolls logo is stamped into the edges which is a nice touch.

Pick up: 9/10
Looks: 6/10
Finish (on back): 10/10 (extremely smooth and shiny).

Not a fan of the tape on the edge, but am a fan of the bat itself.

Pardon my ignorance, but what would that do to the willow performance wise? Also, why do they bleach willow?

Bat looks good mate, good value for what you've paid

From my understanding of the original post these bats have A scuff sheet attached to the front that has "grains" printed on it hiding the actual face of the bat

Cleaning it off the bat may reveal something not so pretty.

That's how I read it anyway ;-)

To confirm, frandonegan is correct. These bats have a scuff sheet attached to the front that has "grains" printed on it hiding the actual face of the bat. Its a shame, because the grains on the back are nice, indicating there could have been some nice ones under there, but I am not too bothered. In real life, the face is not as white as it appears in the pictures.
