Fantastic cricketer for England over the years, how many holes has he dragged them out of? Always scored the runs in tough situations and not to mention the effect he has on others, will be a big miss

A real competitor. Big boots to fill for someone.

I'd go Strauss, Cook, Trott, Bell, KP, Morgan, Prior from now on

Disappointed but he has gone at the top (team wise anyway) and I think it is the right time.
He will still contribute massively in the ODI and 20/20 teams.
I would agree with both of your teams as above, with possibly KP at 5 to allow him slightly more freedom especially early on in his innings!

As always he is doing if for the team. I heard somewhere he said he saw Morgan in nets and knew it was time to give him a chance at his expense.

That is really poetic if that was a huge motivating factor for his retirement. Maybe he will assist the young Ben Stokes (Dave's favourite ;)) at Durham when he goes back for first-class cricket next year!

This topic should remain about the hero that is Paul David Collingwood.

He has set the example for ANY young cricketer wanting to squeeze every last drop of talent that they have been blessed with. This guy has worked unbelievably hard been a brilliant servant to English cricket and his 10 test match hundreds and 3 ashes victories are testament to what hard work will give you. As well as 2020 world champion

Paul Collingwood is a hero who has dragged this team from "hard to beat" to consistency with his dogged displays. It is the right time to go and he fully disserves the MBE he got in 2005.

And what many people don't realise is that his test career batting average of 40.56 is better than that of Mike Gatting (35.55), Nasser Hussain (37.18) and Alec Stewart (39.54) amongst others...

Too sodding right Buzz. An outstanding example for EVERY cricketer, regardless of age, gender, or level. KP could learn a lot from someone like Colly, the hardest working cricketer I've been privileged to watch methinks. Not the greatest in terms of talent, but by God he he could play when he was in form. A clean hitter of the ball in the shorter form, a gritty nurdler with a darn good pull shot in the longer form, and a top bloke, if what the autobiographies of Hoggy, Tres and Freddy say are right. A decent leader as well. Deserves all the plaudits he never really got from the press, always seemed more of a behind-the-scenes man. I remember him digging us out of a hole in NZ a couple of times in the short form with punchy counter-attacking innings. One of my favourite cricketers.

a must read...http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/current/story/495574.html

also...
And then there was Paul Collingwood's fortnight of glory in the Caribbean. It was a year of three captains but a single unifying cause, and no sight was more uplifting than the moment in which Collingwood struck the winning runs off Shane Watson in the World Twenty20 final. The most loyal foot soldier in the England team, who had begun the year with the third of his invaluable Test rearguards in Cape Town, suddenly found himself being mentioned in the same breath as Bobby Moore and Martin Johnson, the only other England captains to have claimed a global sporting title.
Bobby Moore, Martin Johnson, Paul Collinwood. Brilliant that PD Collingwood can be mentioned in the same breath as Bobby Moore and Johnno.
