A question for the retailers, old stock
« on: January 12, 2011, 07:34:02 PM »

I'd like this question to be aimed at the handful of cricket equipment retailers on the forum rather than someone having a guess at it who doesn't know the answer.

If a retailer has stock (bats) left over from a brand from last year and in the off season the brand brings out an entirely new range, where does this leave the retailer? Can they expect to be able to return the now devalued stock on a sort of sale or return setup, or do they have to live with it?

I ask because a shop fairlym local to me has had the same handful of nice bats in all of last season. Now a new range has been launched but they are still asking higher than RRP. They are nice bats, just not worth the prices asked. Might it be worth a cheeky offer?

Does the '?' signify that is a guess mate or do you know?

Frankly the way this shop has operated in the last few years, I can't see them offering 1p of discount. Adidas grade 3 for £225 anyone?

Many shops do this. Either sell on heavily discounted prices or keep their cash flow locked till they sell (which they will eventually).

I have seen shops with a Puma AF limited Ed bat from 2 seasons back still being sold for £250 or more!!

I think this sticker changing problem is more from the marketing driven companies (Kook, Puma, Adidas) and many retailer who have their accounts are on the wrong side of the stick when the season ends as these companies have huge min order (in ££ terms)

Some of the prices I see, and the tiny amount of stock they ever have, it does make me wonder if they buy in from a budget retailer and just stick a few quid on...

Though Jon, that adidas, if it was a beauty, why not take it, maybe it was incorrectly graded, as Tom was saying on another thread a while back...
I think these shops go to trade shows and then see which bats are having new ranges. If it is a completely different profile they sell the old ones at a discounted price, though I think, when I asked Fordham Sports this, they send back to PUma etc and ask for restickering or something...
Not 100% sure though...

The adidas isn't the range in question, but although it is nice, I can get nice for less money. Not a serious tempter.

Spent a long time discussing this with our local sports shop which is sadly no more. He used to buy buy british Brandan only,  so gm, mh,willowstix,  kippax and salix.  He'd do an end of season sale with about 15% discount and anything left would start the next season at rrp before being discounted bit by bit through the season. He was pretty good at his stock 3stimating so rarely had much excess.

Posted on a generic internet phone? :D

The range in question in Salix which as we know has not only changed the labelling dramatically, but also mixed up their shapes, so they stock in the shop is well and truely obsolete. They are nice enough people in their so I dont want to be an (No Swearing Please) but at the same time those bats are not going to sell at that price.

Knowles Sports Worcester. A shop you've just started dealing with.

They're part of the Intersport buying group, so everything is sourced direct from Adidas I'd have thought.

For the majority of retailers - they just sell bats cheap at the end of the season. Knocking upto 50% off. The occasional restickering does go on, depending on shape changes etc.

Oh right, I'd always thought they were independant.
