Injured shoulder
« on: January 25, 2011, 11:07:34 AM »

Ive always had a niggle deep in my shoulder for years I think just from over use being a quick bowler and throwing a lot. but it never affected my game before only hurt really when I was doing certain exercises in the gym (which i stopped because of the pain). A few people in work think it may be my rotator cuff. I played an indoor game a couple of weeks ago and i threw a ball , and it seemed to completely go, I could not throw for about 10 minutes after or even lift my arm above my head. after 10 minutes the pain seemed to subside but soon as i threw with any sort of power it would just go again. Weird thing is it doesnt stop me bowling at all.

First I wondered if this is quite a common thing amongst cricketers? has anyone else experianced this?
And if anyone has any ideas to help it heal faster.
Dont say just rest it.. :)

Cheers

Fast bowler's shoulder. Suffered it myself, and just look at the old Windies greats. Same problem.

There are a number of exercises you can do to increase your shoulder muscle strength that will hold the joint in place better, but I'm afraid it's a slippery downhill slope from here.

I suffered the same injury in the same game of last season. Im not a bowler but woke up the day after the game with a really sore shoulder. After a couple of weeks of it not getting better and taking ibubrofen 3 times a day i went to the doctor. He performed some movement and confirmed i had strained one of the 4 (it hink) rotator cuff tendons. Gave me some stronger anti inflamatories which i took. Pain is sill there when i move my arm right back but now here near as bas as what it was. He did say it will be a weak point and will go again in the future, so advised me to tell my skipper to let me field in the slips to avoid throwing the ball as far, cant see that being too successful!

He also said that if the pills he gave me didnt work they can inject a stronger anti inflammatory into the shoulder joint.

ye the sad thing is im 26....  its annoying because I enjoy my fielding, luckily im skipper next year and can put myself in the slips. Im odd because i bowl and throw in cricket right handed but play darts and tenpin bowling left , so maybe i can train my left arm to throw a cricket ball!   :D or maybe i should just take up keeping always fancied that. Ill ask my mate whos a physio if he knows any good exercises , I think your right tho a slippery slope!

im 15 and have already done a shoulder injury
sounds a little bit like yours i went down to a specialist and got some scans, found out i tore my sub scapular muscle and that it was either surgery or a cortizone injection.
I opted for the injection and was told to give up pace bowling, so just started spin which has been going well for me :)

so if you are really worried about it i would say go see a specialist

My problem was that years of bowling had caused an imbalance in my musculo-skeletal system meaning that my bowling shoulder was pulling forward too much. This was causing the tendons to rub out of their channels and creating a lot of pain.

I was given physio and a load of shoulder strength building exercises, and they seem to have worked for now although I will probably have to stop bowling with any pace in the next five years.

I was thinking I might train myself to bowl left arm...

SLA is the way forward i think ! bring on the armballs..  :) i know what your saying about one side becoming inbalanced same for me. got nets tonight so just going to see how I get on, does seem like one of those injuries that wont go unless I do something about it... which is annoying as the season is coming in fast..

it will be a rotator cuff or bicep damage. i did the same thing rob 4 yrs ago but had surgery on it in 2009, used to be able to throw 50m+ but after 2 yrs of saying it hurts to the doctor they finally send me for an MRI....turns out id ruptured my bicep!

you can do strengthening exercises to build it up depending on itf its a tear, rupture or severd. Hurts like hell when u try reaching up to scratch ur back tho which is the natural movement when u take ur arm back to throw properly. Bowling uses different muscles so isnt casuing any pain!

Recon i did mine at 24 and am now 28...still not 100% but better than it was pre surgery at least.

nice one!
sounds about right arytek.. im hoping I dont need an op, its odd tho because it hurts for 10 minutes after a powerful throw, but pain just goes after 10 minutes and the next day i can feel it isnt 100% but doesnt really stop me doing everyday things and I can reach above my head and down my back fine. So im hoping that it isnt as serious as it could be as I think anyway that if it was torn it would stop me doing things like that.

I need to sort out my throwing action although bowling spin won't do much damage
