Just been doing a bit of stats analysis of players figures during the period 1st Jan 2000 to today.

Trott (1600 runs @ 61.53) and Thorpe (3145 runs @ 53.30) are automatic picks, as are KP (5666 @ 48.42) and Cook (5130 @ 47.50)

John Crawley comes next in the list of averages but he has only played 8 games in the period, so I would discount him.

Then you have Bell (4192 @ 44.12), Trescothick (5825 @ 43.79), Strauss (6084 @ 43.14), Prior (2148 @ 42.96) and Vaughan (5631 @ 42.02)

My top 7 would be:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
KP
Thorpe
Bell
Prior

On to the bowlers:

The top 4 wickettakers for England during the period (Hoggard 248, Harmison 222, Flintoff 213, Anderson 212) all have between 212 and 248 Test wickets, and have an average of between 30.50 and 32.94.

Looking further down the list some stats stick out:  Swann (128 wickets @ 28.10), Gough (94 @ 27.42), Sidebottom (79 @ 28.24), Jones (59 @ 28.23), Finn (46 @ 26.23)

My attack would be Swann, Flintoff, Gough and Anderson, giving me a side of:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
KP
Thorpe
Bell
Prior
Flintoff
Swann
Gough
Anderson

After 1 good series against australia you pick cook?!! Speechless. Trescothicks class will not be matched for a while.

Was very close as to who I would have opening with Cook, Strauss or Trescothick.  But I would have Strauss as skipper so Trescoi just misses out, no matter how good he is/was.  Cook is just turned 26 and already has 16 Test centuries (2 more than Trescothick made in his career) - he will go on to be one of England's all time greats and undoubtedly will be England's all time leading runscorer.  Hard to leave a guy like that out.  Tresco was an outstanding international batsman, but Cook is better.

Foster is a great shout, best keeper this country has had since Jack Russell, and given that Swanny bat's as well, we wouldn't loose out too much.

i still think read is as good as foster but agree both are very good

Tresco has won games by attacking with big centuries - like against SAfrica in 2004/5 at Jo'Burg. Hoggy may have got 7-fer in a session but Tresco gave him something to bowl at:

That 180 in not very long will live in the memory and that's why he gets in ahead of Cook, for now...
