Just been doing a bit of stats analysis of players figures during the period 1st Jan 2000 to today.
Trott (1600 runs @ 61.53) and Thorpe (3145 runs @ 53.30) are automatic picks, as are KP (5666 @ 48.42) and Cook (5130 @ 47.50)
John Crawley comes next in the list of averages but he has only played 8 games in the period, so I would discount him.
Then you have Bell (4192 @ 44.12), Trescothick (5825 @ 43.79), Strauss (6084 @ 43.14), Prior (2148 @ 42.96) and Vaughan (5631 @ 42.02)
My top 7 would be:
Strauss
Cook
Trott
KP
Thorpe
Bell
Prior
On to the bowlers:
The top 4 wickettakers for England during the period (Hoggard 248, Harmison 222, Flintoff 213, Anderson 212) all have between 212 and 248 Test wickets, and have an average of between 30.50 and 32.94.
Looking further down the list some stats stick out: Swann (128 wickets @ 28.10), Gough (94 @ 27.42), Sidebottom (79 @ 28.24), Jones (59 @ 28.23), Finn (46 @ 26.23)
My attack would be Swann, Flintoff, Gough and Anderson, giving me a side of:
Strauss
Cook
Trott
KP
Thorpe
Bell
Prior
Flintoff
Swann
Gough
Anderson
