Relative Grill Positions and sizes.
« on: February 01, 2011, 10:18:31 AM »

There has been a fair amount of discussion within the forum about grill positions on various helmets, so I've taken a few pictures to explain the big headed ogre problem that some of us have encountered.

My head size is 620mm around the headband and from middle of head between the ears to chin is 380mm.

I have a Masuri 610-630 helmet and an Ayrtek. Both have steel grills. I have only tested manufacturers grill on their own helmet. I will test all grills on the Ayrtek and Masuri helmets when I have the Albion grill. My requirement was to have the grill as far away from the face as possible, hence the screw positions visible. The pictures show the results.

Ayrtek Helmet, Ayrtek Grill

The grill is all but resting on my chin and doesn't drop down far enough to cover my chin. If I was hit by a bouncer, the grill would transfer most of the energy directly into my jaw! I couldn't use it like this.

Masuri Helmt, Masuri Grill

The grill is a distance away from my chin, about 10mm, maybe slightly less, and positioned lower. In order to achieve this, I have to have the aperture between top of the grill and peak at 60mm. This is not ideal as I wouldn't want the ball squeezing its way through.

I would prefer to use the Ayrtek grill due to its simple way of maintaining a 55mm gap between peak and grill, however to do this, I think Ayrtek probably need to make a grill for the slightly larger gents amongst us. I'm not sure if there are plans to do this. I think that all it would take is an extra 20mm of length on the longer strut, and maybe a minor angle adjustment of about 2 degrees to take the edge of the grill lower. I don't know how likely this is.

I'll update the thread with Albion and Masuri grills on the Ayrtek once I have the Albion grill.

Good suggestion Tim, though this doesn't apply to myself, I can see the concerns you have... :) - My grille is miles away from my chin, I think...I oughta check tonight in the nets lol :|

I think this is really good info actually. A couple of team mates have the same issue. One just got his dad to weld a plate onto the back of the earplate with more holes and other got other grilles.

Tom do an Albion style grille! ;)

Or buy a few Albion grilles to sell on to those that would require them I guess...though I reckon making your own grille is cheaper..

as a pointer Tim u shud actually have the chin cup on your chin when wearing our helmet to achieve maximum benefit from the 4 point strapping system :)

not sure if this will effect the angle of the grille or not but will aid in a better fit

Fair enough, but then the bottom of the grill doesn't cover my chin (to be fair, not sure whether it is supposed to ??? )and the gap between the bottom and the front of my chin is still a couple of mm maximum! Big head I guess.

Hmm. I look a bit like a chipmunk in this pic.

Had a quick look at the Keith Barker video on You Tube. Looks as though he was using a Masuri grill?

The grille looks like an ayrtek one to me tim, just deceptively seems like a masuri due to the labelling, though I think Tom can confirm... ???
