Help with coaching please!!!
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:49:13 PM »

Hi guys,
Looking for a little bit of help for a training session i will be taking tomorrow. There will be 10 kids taking part, aged 11-12.

I have to deliver two sessions - one covering the run up and bound, the other covering off spin.
I have the off spin session done and dusted...i need help with the run up and bound!

It would be a massive help if you guys could come up with some suggestions as to some drills that you have either done or seen coached.

All suggestions and any tips are much appreciated! (By the way - each session is only half an hour!

Pair the kids off, set up channels with cones, one partner observes whilst the other bowls an over.  Observers check for the bowler to be running straight with arms pumping in straight line as well.  After a few shots each, introduce targets to ensure that they're still running in straight etc whilst targets are present.  Introduce points game with deductions for squint run ups/arms.

Not so sure about the bound, probably reinforcing the point that they should be bounding forward rather than up.

If the kids don't know how many steps they should be running in from get them to shut their eyes and just run in then go through their action when the time feels right. Mark the point where they start and the point where they decide to "bowl" the ball, then you can measure how many steps this is for them.

if your emphasising the bound set a line of cones down in a place they have to bound over the deliver the ball....i would say something higher or hold something like we are sometimes made to practice if we get lazy but that could be dangerous for the nippers!

what leo said is a good idea too i like that!
