Leo, do you mean ECB Premier?

Our first team play Palace Shield Premier, but I wouldn't class that as a Premier league like the Yorkshire League or Northern League etc...

The difference between Premier league and Div 1 compared to Div 2 and lower in Surrey is huge... I played a season of Div 1 and averaged 12 - now I may have had a few technical issues then, seriously I was massively found out!!

That's one of the Leagues I have played in.

I'm quite priviledged to have played at a very high standard (Yorkshire League and Northern League), and been in those sides on merit, without ever having actually been good enought to play at that standard.

As Buzz has alluded to, the step up is massive. I've always been good enough at the level below to warrant an extended run at 1st team level, and consequently I've had the chance to play with and against some exceptional cricketers. Not quite up to it myself though, hence one of the reasons I'm content to play more locally these days.

Sunday prem... that's a new one!

Its a 6 county league with various prem champions and other teams that arent far off, we are able to compete through prioritising sunday cricket while other teams sometimes lose a player or two to minor counties fixtures. If we prioritised saturday cricket we could play prem but in reality, our local prem isnt as good as what we can play on sundays, never called it a sunday prem but its the closest you could get.

I have played premier league cricket most of my life including Lancashire league, bolton league and played a season at Devizes in the west of england orem and had a few months at acton in the middlesex prem i think it was??.

The only difference i found was strength in depth and wickets and of course the proffesionals .

I'm still playing ECB Prem now in the Northern League. Big step up in my eyes. Nice playing at better grounds (mostly). Usually the difference is that the clubs are run more like businesses, unlike the majority of village teams.

I played against a team who were 2nd in the West of England Premier League last week, and to be honest I didn't think the bowling was too different from our league. However the batting was ridiculous, ex-Gloucestershire/Somerset batsman whacked it everywhere and they won by 10 wickets lol!

Not played against premier-level opposition in the UK, but have done in Jamaica (and county level), and found that as a bowler I was fine, bowling line and length with "wibble-wobble", but as a batsman, well, the less said the better really.

Yeah it's similar in the Wepl. In premier one there tends to be a lot of 2nd xi or current county players. Whereas prem 2 and our division tend to have more ex-county players. Its a good experience playing against them :)

Yeah I am at the Mote, not exactly setting the world on fire. The bowling I have come up against is class. This weekend we have Bromley and I am led to believe they have a couple of chaps who have played at a few counties/england squad. Wouldn't know though really. Huge step up from playing country grade cricket in Australia, which is why I came over here though - to improve myself. You either relish the opportunity to play against quality opposition and use it to improve, or drop down and play in a weaker comp/don't improve. Personally I love facing the quickies, have played 2 games for the Mote 1's since changing clubs, played myself in nicely against the quickies only to get out playing completely dumb shots against the spinners.

Our 1s got a losing draw against Bromley last week. They aren't as strong as previous years she they have had a ridiculous line up but are still a force to be reckoned with!!!

Do you reckon Matt Coles will be allowed to turn out for you this season at all?

Kent have been quite right on their players playing for league sides this year, mainly cos their side squad is so small these days. Given that Colesey has been injured id have thought it would have been an ideal way to get some cricket under his belt

I'd agree there! I play in the Northern League at the moment and I could be looking to move soon. Have no promotion/relegation is a huge negative on the league. I think there needs to be some restructuring. I would happily travel another 30 minutes each weekend to be able to play cricket games that actually mean something!

Although the standards probably a little weaker, the Palace Shield is great for that.

Where would you move Tom? Liverpool Comp?

Don't know. Not something I've put a huge amount of thought into. Would be quite hard to leave since I've played their for over 10 years. Plus I live in Lancaster so it would have to be somewhere relatively close to there.

I don't think it's as strong as the Northern League.

In 5 years at Preston I had 32 innings in the 1st XI, scored 291 runs with a high score of 32.

In my very first year of Palace Shield, where I only played Premier League games I scored 471 runs from 25 innings with a high score of 86*

never said it was johnny just they give you a good game

northern league suprised me we beat blackpool st annes and carnforth and we were told it was the strongest in Lancashire.

I guess though with the Lancs League the quality has dropped in my opinions in both terms of proffesionals and ameatures

I agree about the standard of lancs league dropping dave! As you will have seen most top amateurs have left the league now, with 3 being in the rib league!
I'm probably going to be moving next year to the Cheshire county league or Liverpool
Comp also! Probably Cheshire county!

I think Northern League is prob the best out of the leagues mentioned. Palace Shield has some top players in it who like living in the comfort zone. I think NPL is dominated by ball though as the wickets are generally poor and most sides have at least 2 quality bowlers. Just look at the scores; very few above 200!
We're currently near the bottom of the NPL table yet beat Lytham and got narrowly beaten by Ormskirk in the cup (currently top of the table in Liv comp). I know they were sunday matches so both sides could have been missing a few players but I definitely wouldn't say the Liverpool comp is any better than NPL in standard. However they have much better wickets.

Im not surprised, they rate him pretty highly down there. Have to agree though, best way for him to get fit and some matches under his belt will be playing premier league cricket. Although there has been quite a few games for kent 2's of late but they have mostly been t20's

Maybe, but I'm always interested in what "pros" are getting. Remember a few years back when Slough had Lewis,Hayward etc it was rumoured the bill was £30k+. They had just sold up their inner city site and relocated further out, making a tidy profit in the process.
Title: Re: Premier League

I've heard around £20k for a big name pro, plus extras (car, house, travel expenses etc...)

I think you can get a decent sub-continent pro for around £5k, and then there are clubs who pay a UK resident - I've heard different figures - £100-£200 a match.

Not so sure about 'Shamateurs'. I have a friend who plays Bradford League who gets "Travelling Expenses" - he gets about £70 a match.

wrenthorpe paid craig white £300 quid a game a few years ago i think.

i know people that are on performance money.

my Mate matty jordan is playing for wakefield thorns in central yorkshire league. he turned birstal down on £2 a run.

so they must be paying him a fair wack.

Ive got big respect for a lad that some times guests with us on a tuesday in the 20/20

he was offered 3k to play at townvile in the central yorkshire league.

Turned it down to play for castleford cc in the Yorkshire ECB prem for no money! hes only 20.

was talking to him other night he says if u score 1000 runs a season after a few years clubs will be offering best part of 5k for a decent opener

Dental cover is something which I am hoping to have alongside Urdu lessons ;)

Johnny Firefly might be able to suss out these players I'm talking about but here goes:

Big name Pro who is playing in the NPCL is on £15k including a house for his wife and kid as well as a car.

The same team have a new opening bat who plays minor counties who is paid £150 a week.

We have a strict rule whereby we don't pay any amateurs. If there were cash prizes dependant upon league positions then I'm sure that could change, but I can't see what other teams are achieving besides a higher league position, but for what cost?

CORRECT!

Just less than a third of that I think. Unsure to whether he will playing as a pro next year though. Recently married, new job etc. To play as an amateur I think. As a pro he has to be at junior practice on a Monday, senior practice on a Tuesday, take the juniors to their games on a Wednesday and then play sometimes Friday, Saturday & Sunday! Think he wants a bit less!

Heard about the Craig White one. Didn't he not bowl and get a duck in one match lol!

Know a fair number of players down south who played Minor Counties and never got a penny, just wanted to play for their clubs. Think paying players is far more common in the north from what I've seen.

£2 a run seems good but what's the point of paying a guy for 18 runs (£36) and getting stuffed! I think playing in the ECB Premier Leagues will be the way most serious cricketers will go.

Some good money to be made in club cricket now.

Johnny, it's early days and as we know overseas pros can only be afforded if clubs have one of the following: a busy bar, a club sponsor, a benefactor or a massive relocation package.

Unfortunately the profit margin on 7up is not good. Also the council owns the ground so no way of luring Tesco to give us millions to relocate. So we need to work on getting sponsors on board as that's the only way of competing with the big boys in the Northern League.

I'll keep you posted pal.

I remember playing against their 2nd team a couple of years ago, their spread was amazing. I think it's a ploy. Feed up the opposition so they can't run after tea.

Think he got a first baller. Apparently a guy kicked in off the hoarding and bowled him a Yorker...don't think he saw it until it ripped his middle peg out lol

Cheers for that simmy. He bowls decent wheels but seems like he didn't set the world alight.

Used to frikkin love playing at Castleford. A very grand ground for a relatively small club and also the first ground I ever played a sweep shot in competitive cricket

I don't remember it, but my first ever game of cricket was at Castelford.  I was three weeks old, and my Dad was skippering them!

Is that the new Castleford pavilion?  Looks good.  I've been there a couple of times after it got burnt down and we were changing in portakabins.  Although, I must admit the portakabins there were a lot nicer than some of the pavilions I've seen as it had showers and evrything you need.
