Hey guys,
I know most of you guys are pommies, but is wearing the helmets the norm for you guys in club cricket?
Over here in Australia, it kind of crept into the game...... It wasn't that long ago that if someone wore a helmet, you'd call them a girl and then bowl at the body.
These days only "number 4" and I don't wear helmets, all the younger guys have them and say they were made to wear them in juniors and just feel "more comfortable" in them.
What's it like in your home towns?

In the UK, you have to wear a helmet to play in adult cricket under the age of 17 I believe. I think you do in Junior cricket as well, but I'm not so sure about that.
We've had this discussion before, but of course, you can't find it on the site due to search issues... It's here:

I feel that I only see what I need to see, giving me that tunnel vision of the bowler and his arm.
Also accidents do happen and beamers do occour, a few years back one bloke in our area got chucked a beamer, tried to get out of the way and hit his head on the stumps and is now paralized neck downwards.
Now I'm not saying that wearing a lid would have definatley changed this but it may have given him the confidence to try and hook the shot knowing that its a free hit.
-
I used to wear a helmet up to the age of 18 then this year I didn't wear a lid. Then in an end of season friendly a bowler bowled a beamer which hit me in the side of the neck, luckily I wasn't seriously hurt but could have been a lot worse - always wear a lid now!
-
I think it's just the fact that the poms like wearing them to protect their lipstick and eyeliner. ;) because seriously when was the last time England had an intimidatingly fast bowler... Larwood?...haha

Low blow...lucky I wear a protector pep...lol

i had to ware one as a kid.
but then soon as i hit 18 i never did.

I was about to say "protectors are for girls...discuss" but realised how inappropriate and wrong that fact is!

I'm an Aussie and I have always worn a helmet, started in U11's and I am now 19.
My dad had his 3 front teeth knocked out by a cricket ball while batting (he now has 3 fake teeth), he's pretty hopeless tbh, but my mum said either I wear a helmet or I don't play, so I have worn one from the start. When I first started they weren't compulsory, but then in under 13 they were, so everyone had to wear one up untill U16's. I rarely take it off because I don't like to change anything while I'm batting, so I try and keep it on, unless there are spinners from both ends. Top edging the ball into my face is also a concern, lol.
-
I always wear one ever since I copped one and broke my jaw
-

If you were facing Harmison, you'd wear one simply because you didn't know where the ball was going to go... It wouldn't bounce before it hit your head...

as grounds are spending less time looking after pitches and the NHS is becoing somewhat oversubscribed, the idea of wearing a lid is rather more appealing than in the past.
and Number 4 Fred Trueman could bowl a bit quick according to Fred Trueman. there may have been a few others too - fancy facing Syd Lawrence or Devon Malcolm in the nets without a lid...

I wouldn't say Devon Malcolm would be the first name to pop into my head when I thought of intimidatingly fast bowlers

perhaps you weren't at the oval for this then... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHzjsjmmZB0
then again you might have seen this in Aus...

That would have been about the same time Atherton was doing a bit of ball tampering wouldn't it???..
No doubt he bowled well and certainly a couple of intimidating balls there but we do have to remember that this was S.A's first real taste of test cricket after the apartheid inspired ban was lifted and some truely awful shots were played which resulted in wickets falling
-
This is my favourite combination from Brett Lee. Try not wearing a helmet to this, then followed up by a cracker.

Lets be realistic here though Langer as much as we all like to think we are facing fast bowlers how many of us are facing this type of bowling... I would say not many of us here thats for sure
-
Yet another classic from Brett Lee - This one is even better simply because of who Australia are playing ;)

Strauss did score a hundred in the second innings to be fair to him though.
On Devon Malcolm, he was quick and aggressive, but often had wayward spells. If he was more consistent, he'd have been right up there.

that is another reason why a lid would be imperative!!
-
Funnily enough I am more likely to wear one for spinners. Have a bad habit of top edging sweeps into my face!

Haven't you realised by now that maybe you shouldn't/can't play the sweep shot... lol

The fact that people on here aren't facing bowlers as quick as Brett Lee etc has no real relevance as the batsman facing the faster bowlers have better techniques and faster reactions, so although us club cricketers aren't facing 90mph bumpers from Lee, a 70mph bouncer to a club cricketer is probably equally as testing
-
canners - really it isn't. A short ball at 70mph is a complete longhop...!!
maybe at 78+ at club level - but we don't see much decent short stuff in club cricket - typically it is the pitch that adds the spice rather than the player.

Most pitches, even at that pace in club cricket barely get above waist height. It's nets where you need the helmet. Hard floor, short balls.
-
If someone wants to bowl 70mph bouncers at me I believe their figures would get quite expensive... I don't like to brag but the village trundler will agree with me when I say I am quite partial to a short ball and the pull/hook
-
Ok i should have said 80mph, but surely playing on better pitches with truer bounce helps the batters...
What I was trying to say was although for alot of us a 70mph is a long hop that should be put away, there's some people out there who may find a relatively gentle 70mph long hop difficult to play... Hence why they were a helmet?
So surely the standard of the batsman comes into it

not you canners, you would be ducking out of the way with a girly scream ;)
on a different note - it is great when you see an international batting without a lid on, as MS is doing at the moment...

I guess it's just how we were all brought up... I was brought up being told a helmet was a sign of weakness therefore I have never worn one in my life.. Have I been hit?.. Yes... but to me that was just part of the game.. putting each others skills against one another
-

I've hit enough people in the head to realise that a helmet is a good idea. The worst damage I've done is splatter someone's nose, knocking them over and getting them out in the process. I've also hit people on the throat and the ear. At the time I was only about 70-75mph, but I am tall and get bounce. Having done that kind of damage to people, I'd suggest helmet wearing is a good idea!

I have also hit people and knocking teeth out Tim in my younger, faster days... No mercy
-
Always had to wear a helmet but from next year I doubt I will when keeping standing up and probably only wear one batting on dodgy pitches, which is most of the ones I play on
-
As an opening batsman I always wear one, you never know how quick the bowlers will be untill you face them!

very true!!!
-

AGREED! especially if its teams you've not played against before
-
Every season I have been hit at least once or twice flush on the grille (i never take eyes off the ball LOL). :D
To be really honest - It feels great to go to Work Monday morning THAN visiting your dentist to figure out how many teeth are you missing.
Especially for weekend cricketers(like all of us in United States) its a MUST.
Jag.
-
Haven't you realised by now that maybe you shouldn't/can't play the sweep shot... lol
It works most of the time! Broke my nose once - carried on, scoring 48 of a 10th wicket stand of 49!
-
In the nets the bowlers I bat against always seem to be pretty tall - I'm always edging leg glances into my grille. Batting without a helmet just feels naked - I feel unprotected and vulnerable, like if I was batting with no pads.
-
Better safe than sorry I always say there are a couple of teams I think I'll be ok but I'd like to play on some of these pitches you guys play on if it does not get above waist high I face quite a few decent pace bowlers who can get it head high at quick pace so no helmet is just stupid as I've seen a few nasty hits from people who said "I don't need a helmet" Braun over brains
-
I have never worn a helmet until this season, when trying to sweep a leg spinner top edged it into my eyebrow wnding up in A&E to get patched up.
I have worn one since, no one ones called me a girl and if they do they will be told to F__k off
-
I used to bat at 10/11 and never used one.
Then started moving up to 5/6 and still never used one.
Occasional keeper and STILL never wore one, even when standing up to stumps!
But last season started batting at 2-4 so I have started wearing one now.
It's something I will be getting used to wearing at nets and try to get comfortable with it.
But as I have an Ayrtek, there should be no excuse as it's so light anyway!
-
Absolutely no reason not to wear a lid, anyone who slags you off for doing so is a moron.
I never used to wear one when I was younger but the I top edged one into my mouth trying to pull a fairly slow ball in the nets. Probably says more about my batting than the general risk of getting hit - but after losing 2 teeth and rearranging loads more i'll not take the risk again.
Anyone can top edge one or get hit by a throw coming in so it's not worth the risk. Given helmets are very cheap these days everyone should wear them.
-
I used to only wear a lid at indoor nets because of the exaggerated bounce and what not. I started wearing one in games and standing up to the stumps now. I didn't see the point in practicing in a lid and then not wearing one in a game and not being as confident against the short ball and whilst sweeping.
-
I wear one batting and keeping (sorry Simmy :P)
Batting: In the nets i was wearing a cap, top edged a sweep and took my cap off.
Keeping: Our pitch can bounce low or high (a good length ball can go past shoulder high) I guess im not experienced enough as a keeper to take them as cleanly or risk free.
Took one on the chin keeping when the batsman top edged one while stood up in a cap. (I had the last laugh though cos i caught him out off it :D)
Also I cant afford not to.
A helmet costs £30 upwards.
I have a crown (front centre top tooth) they are £400 a pop......
-
Anyone not wearing a helmet through choice is a little foolish if you ask me.
My Ayrtek is a one off purchase that can be refurbed in the future if it starts to take a few knocks and so I see it as an outlay that will pay itself back for the majority of my future in cricket. If you look at it that way, surely any cost implications cannot be the reason; especially if you employ the same thought to a helmet that maybe £30-£50.
The players that goad someone for being protected are either very poor at sledging and cannot think of anything more cunning to say or perhaps are desperate to get your wicket. those same people would not be laughing if a knock to the head caused a few weeks off unpaid during what is ultimately a hobby for us all.
It does take a while to get used to one mind and I struggle if I am at the stage of a game where I might have to start teeing off; Don't ask me why but I feel a little restricted when trying to take on a spinner; a strange feeling really as when a pace bowler needs to go; the lid gives me confidence to track him.
Horses for courses really but if I were an employer who lost a employee due to an incident that could have been avoided with someone forsight and common sense; I would not be a happy bunny!
-
You ought to replace your helmet after each time you get hit, so either you will pay more than the outlay your suggesting or... You didn't need it in the first place!
-
I'm 16 so I have to wear a helmet at the moment. I will not change this when I'm 18, definitely not when batting!
It just gives me the confidence and security as I know if I miss it there is something to protect my head.
My Ayrtek gives me good visibility so I don't find it much of a problem.
When keeping I don't wear a helmet standing back, and generally do standing up. Unless it's standing up in the middle of an over...the one game I kept without a helmet standing up I kept pretty badly, not in byes terms but in missed chances >:( - so I think I'll stick with the lid as I'm used to it.
In the end, Cricket is a hobby and it's my head on the line, so £200 for your head in good condition (or whatever price it may be) is well worth paying for in my opinion.
Just my views though, it would be significantly more different if I had been brought up not wearing a helmet with a leather ball - in that case I would have to have been hit before I'd wear a helmet - if that makes sense! :-[
Interesting debate though :)
-
Thanks for your replies, some interesting answers there!
As number 4 could confirm, I'm hardly a top order batsman (consider myself a 'specialist number 9 lol), but I always find when a ball is enroute to my noggin, instinct and self preservation kick in and I can pull or hook it successfully.
-
When I said a few knocks, I meant scuff and general wear from knocking around the bag etc.
Valid point though Johnny, not thought about the replacing of it should it get hit.
I think it would be my pride more than anything that would take the biggest dent should I ever get pinned!
Will be sure to show off my club crest and paint job when admiring any damage though! ;)
-
I haven't read this topic, or bits of it...
Would've been a lot worse without one.
-
Always had to wear a helmet and always will. Like Bruce said, someone in Dorset got hit by a Beamer and is now paralysed. Having bowled ones that have jumped off of a length and into someone's grill due to a dodgy pitch.
It's not the fast bowlers you have to fear with their bouncers!
-

As an opening batsman - I always took your approach - however when you face some of the opening bowlers I do on a green top, descretion has suggested that a lid is sensible.
For the first half of last season (and all of the season before) I was the only person in my team not to wear a lid when batting - when this was pointed out to me and that I was being a bit of an idiot I have started wearing mine not just in the nets but in almost all games too.
The question of whether it impacted my scores is interesting - but in general once I had commited myself to wearing the lid, it was only an excuse for a poor shot.
-
Don't generally like wearing them tbh. Always find that the grill gets in the way of seeing the ball somewhere in it's flight. Also when running I find that they slip about and don't stay secure in the way that a cap will.
I'll only wear it if there's reason too.... if I think the track is quick enough to warrant it, or if there's someone especially quick. Having said that we net at the ECB in Loughborough and I always wear one there - it's a bloody nightmare to bat on - bouncy and very quick. Wouldn't have fancied Harmison or Flintoff in there!
-
i really dislike batting in a lid and didn't wear one at any stage last season. however as i'm not playing 2nd team cricket as opposed to 3rd/4th team i'm planning to force myself in winter nets. plenty of young quicks in the 2nds with something to prove!
i always wear a face mask when stood up keeping, this is mainly to stop me from "flinching" and helps me relax when standing up to medium pace. no need for a lid though, i don't take the ball with the back of my head.
-
which facemask do you use? an aero one?
-
which facemask do you use? an aero one?
As long as it's not that GN one - we played against someone who had one of them, the stick he got... (from his own teammates)
-
no need for a facemask unless ur hannibal lecter!
-
Thought I'd resurrect this topic following an incident at nets the other night. One of our guys was in the slowish net, and had decided not to bother with his helmet because it was, after all, slowish.
He misjudged the bounce of one of the balls and I'm not sure whether the top edge was involved or not, but it hit him in the top lip. Off to A&E and a couple of stitches....
The moral being, if you've got a helmet, wear it. Pace of the bowling really isn't important!
-
1st ball of nets last year my slow left arm off spin was top edged into the new lad at the clubs eye....not the best start off for him at the club but hes now lidded up and in fear of my pacey bowling!!!

But is he lidded up by you though? (and did you sort him a good deal out of guilt)

I know just what was going through toms head, "hmm, no helmet, there's some money to be made here"!

i did tell him i could kit him out but he already had a masuri so made sure he got the full treatment on discovering this!!! ;)

just seen this, yeah I use the Aero facemask. unfortunately being much more handsome than Simmy i have to use it to protect my good looks.

Simmys is used in a similar method to a muzzle on a dog i thought....grrrrrr

this must surely be evidence that a lid is recomended!

I'm looking at playing some of the newer shots in the game this season so will be under my cheap and nasty lid.

Played in a game with Tom where the batsman was hit by a beamer from a fairly sharp bowler. Tom came up to me and said something along the lines of 'potential customer'

nothing wrong with a bit of ambulance chasing Jospeh ;)
