Title: Worst stickers on a bat
Post by: Joe on October 27, 2011, 06:43:59 AM
There are some truly terrible stickers out there, but what brand do we think are the worst?

For me, it's gotta be CJI. They're terrible!

I've always disliked the sommers ones, there's too much going on with those stickers. I'm a big fan of subtlety lol.

Really? I haven't liked HC stickers since they dumped the classic "Stag and Target".

i think hunts stickers are a little over the top. the old style ones looked alot more classical

I agree that the new HC stickers aren't very sympathetic to the traditional ones in they way some others have managed to be when updating.

feel free to call me old fashioned...

Of the UK brands, I really am not a fan of the slazenger stickers, if they simplified them, with a more classical, more vintage look and used the cat image better, they could be so much better.
Title: Re: Worst stickers on a bat

I get the impression hunts are trying to be something they're not - the new stickers are modern, neon-y and bright, whereas 2 years ago they were all classic profiles and stickers etc. They need to get the Hunts County brand sorted out, so it's clear what their brand is.

e.g. with Newbery it's obvious the brand is a kind of classic, heritage brand, and Puma or Mongoose are all modern and hi-tech. Some brands I don't really get what they're going for, i.e. GM who seem to be halfway between heritage and modern, Kookaburra's image is all messed up (although it's improved with the 2012 range) and willostix's is really strange.

Quite agree with you there about most brands - With willoxstix I just see them a bootique brand, I wouldn't say they're trying to be either classical or modern, just being themselves.

I think Gm get it closest to spot on, their stickers never look dated, yet they always manage to keep them in touch with their long traditions.

The company with the best branding in my opinion is Fat Bats, I think their branding is excellent - it comes across to me as stylish and funky, but still retaining sophistication and sleek.

Warsop= ugly and bizarre. I think most stickers are in bad taste, either from the standpoint of shameless appeal to youth, fixation on marketing and branding, or simply on aesthetic grounds. I like the look of the Gray-Nicolls Legend and most of the G &M  minus the Luna.

They just look like someone has drawn them in MS paint in about 5 minutes, made even worse as some of Warsops older ones were quite nice.

I'm not a big fan of redback or dewberry, but agree that the old woodworm stickers were great! I had a torch (KP's bat) an it was awesome!

Them warsop stickers are terrible - a piece of text on a red/black gradient. Can't of taken more than 2-3 minutes to make.

As I said, Warsop the worst. The new stickers are worse than the one pictured---a Marlin (deep sea fishing or cricket?) and another with a giant metallic cobra that looks like it should be in the back window of a low rider.  I think less is more. Bats should have a zen-like, shaker-esque simplicity whereby the willow and the elegant shape it has been given speak for themselves. Here is an example of, imo, good taste.

Judging by the comments here most people like relatively small, unobtrusive, conservative design stickers.

Is seeing more wood/showing off the grain the reason behind this?

I think you'd get different answers from a regualar cricketer rather than the 'geeks' on here, and from kids who want something 'cool' or used by someone 'cool'.

Personally I like fairly minimal, fairly classical and fairly simple stickers like Bradbury, etc
Title: Re: Worst stickers on a bat

Which do you prefer? Modern stickers a la one of these?

Or the various older stickers?

Personally out of all of these, I'd have to go with the old Hunts County, Bulldog and H4L as my favourites, the GN as least changed and the CA as my least favourite. The worst though has to be Joe's Rage...

Yeah - a plain bat looks lovely if it has excellent grains and when it is white, unoiled and unused but when it's got cherries all over it they do look unfinished and poor.

My two cents on plain bats

Fair enough, just seemed that there was so much disagreement over stickers that a plain bat might have got the reaction it did.
I agree once used plain bats don't look that great, but then again, do the stickered bats look good with cherries all over..?

When buying a bat, do stickers come into your thought process..? ???

Yes and no. You still want atop performing bat but if you had a number of choices then you will get the one with the best looking stickers. Also nothing a bit of nail polish remover can't sort out:-)

Title: Re: Worst stickers on a bat
Post by: Joe on October 28, 2011, 06:11:46 AM
Yeah, when buying a bat from a shop I make a note of completely ignoring stickers, I go only on pickup. This has lead me to have 2 Pumas and a Hunts County.

But obviously if it is a custom, as just about all custom bat makers will make you a bat as good as the others, stickers are the only thing that really sets them apart.
Title: Re: Worst stickers on a bat
Post by: petehosk on October 28, 2011, 09:52:07 AM
If you get nice stickers on a bat, that's a bonus.
The important thing is the pickup, balance, pressing and finish on the bat!!
You can remove and replace stickers if you don't like them - it's more expensive to replace the bat!!  ;)

I've always had a deep loathing of Slazengers, probably because I associate them with sports direct, who in itself I associate someone at our club who uses all gear from sports direct and is absolutely hopeless. (His bat is cloth covered)

Also, my local sports directs are bloody terrible.
