Title: Always wear a lid, no matter the standard or weather!!
Post by: 19reading87 on October 17, 2012, 02:33:52 PM
Having got hit on the head by a beamer the other week and suffering with constant headaches since I went for a CT scan last week to see what the issue was .... Just got my results and I fractured my skull!! The pitch was slow and low so thought a helmet wasn't needed! ALWAYS LID UP!!

Wait..........you were playing cricket, outdoors, in October? Do you not live in the UK anymore?  :)

Sorry about the head thing! Hope the headaches pass soon....

I've never been one to use a helmet, but I'm going to make myself wear one in all formats next season.

I wear mine 90% of the time. Good job too, took a bouncer in the lid in our cup final from a top edge. just deflected and went for 4 over gully  :D

which text? If it's the one about the club dinner then I should be ok and I'll have curry buffet. Any plans on the drinks front?

I got hit in the jaw in a Wetherby League game about 2 years ago and that prompted my Ayrtek purchase. Some rank 2nd XI bowlers who hadn't played in months slipped in a beamer. 2 weeks after with my Ayrtek on, some moron bowled 3 beamers in 10 balls. I said to the skipper "aren't you going to take him off", he replied (showing his observation skills) "what for". Even the league umpires in the WCL don't care. One cup game they bowled nearly a dozen beamers in the space of 10 overs and I asked why they didn't call no ball, the reply was " you should've smacked it for 4". Easy to say if it's not you getting a 60 mph deliver thrown at your head when you least expect it. In fact they only started calling them once somebody got hit, probably fearing a complaint, and then carried it through our bowling innings. It's a bug bear of mine and I'd like leagues to adopt a 2 dangerous beamers and you're off policy.

That said old habits die hard as I was wearing my cap when redders got clonked. The problem is when the pitch is as low as Ashorne and you know bar a top edge it's never getting up above waist high, then the temptation is to leave the lid off. Then what happens is when you aren't playing against proper bowlers (ie. people who know what they are doing and have the ability to control a ball) you run the risk of some joker slipping a beamer in. The lower the standard the more likely the beamer. Never had this problem in TVL Div 3/4/5.

We play with a guy, who 5 years ago was lethal. You could guarantee that one of the first 6 balls would be a beamer. Problem was he was left arm and they would be coming at about 70mph. Having been on the receiving end of one, I learned to always wear a lid...

I never used to wear one, and even when standing up to the stumps in my (part time) keeping role.
I got a couple of beamers and a couple of bouncers directed at my head in various matches this season, so I figured someone up there is trying to tell me something!!!
Also with the likes of Boucher and others wearing one, I figure that they are countless times better than me! And if they can't avoid every ball, then what chance do I stand! Helmets every time now!

I'm sure it's a recent thing as well. I never remember having to worry about beamers in the 80's/90s, maybe it was just a better standard and players knew what they were doing with it. Remember talk a while back about less proper bowlers being around than there use to be. More recreational bowlers who don't play often or part timers doing full time bowling stints. At the time in the TVL things weren't helped by the wickets being like roads and nobody wanting to bowl.

I play at such a low level that I've never felt the need to wear a helmet. However, since reading through this thread from obviously wiser heads than mine, I am having a serious re-think!  :o

i had a near boucher incident 3 years ago - but the seam of the ball cut my eyebrow as opposed to my eye - i would have lost vision in the eye most likely. ended up with 5 stiches on my eyebrow from a top edge...that was the last day with no helmet.....

I don't wear a helmet, I know the dangers (cut my chin off a top edge a couple years ago and had 10 stitches and then a few close calls afterwards as well) but everytime i have tried wearing one it seems more a distraction then help, while wearing one in nets i have been hit a lot more on my body as i keep missing the ball...will try again in nets before next season to see i can get used to it...

I do agree though that if you have a helmet you should wear it.

Not defending the beamers in the slightest but it may just be that they don't like you not wearing a helmet. It can be a little insulting, I'm known to drop a couple of bouncers in the nets to any fool who decides not to wear a helmet. I warn them first of course though!

Ive got to say when starting cricket again this year I was thrown in to bowl. I had asked the capt not to put me on an noted that I hadn't bowled for years and was never a bowler back then. 3rd ball in was a beamer. Safe to say I will not bowl again until I can be sure I will hit the deck first and that is personal preference.

Also didn't start wearing a lid until the second half of the season, which is when I top edged onto the lid.

From a bowling point of view I get a little irritated if a batsman takes his lid off when I'm bowling but then again I know full well on most grass decks I'm not quick enough to bowl bouncers.

From a batting point of view if I feel the bowlers aren't fast enough to cause any issues then I may not wear a helmet. I don't sweep or top edge much so that isn't an issue but 18/20 I'll wear a helmet no matter what.

Agree definately wear a lid no matter how slow the bowling is.

3 years back took my lid off as was hottest day of the year and a leggie came on to bowl. 2 balls later top edge into my mouth resulting in cleft lip injury. Needed surgery that night and no sport for 3 months. Happened in May so wiped out pretty much the whole season!

Now I never bat without a lid. I agree it feels odd when starting wearing one, thats why get wearing one in the nets to get used to it for the season.

Now just need to get used to keeping in a lid!

I'm a fan of the balance of the game and refuse to wear a helmet.

Very occasionally someone takes umbrage and bowls short, but I am 6"3, have knees, hips and a neck with which I can dodge, I also have a chunk of willow in my hands.

In my experience, most people hit in the head have taken their eye off the ball and get hit in the side or back of the head.

I'm less bothered about bowlers and more about me. I've seen far more injuries caused by people hitting rubbish bowling into their face than by bowlers directly. I'm pretty sure that very few people have that level of reflex reaction.

Had a lengthy discussion with a few ECB physios and current pro players over the weekend about this and people getting sconned at both pro and club level.

Top edges cannot be foreseen or avoided unless you have superman like reactions! More people take on bouncers due to wearing a lid but if they get it wrong they pay the price and wear one.

If u saw a bouncer coming without a lid would you take it on or hit the deck and duck it? At the end of the day after the weekend the majority of us have a job to go back and do to earn a living...this could be difficult if seriously injured.

most serious injuries I hear of are from a full toss top edged into the batsmans  head.

that is why I wear a lid.

Bouncers are the one thing I have been lucky and reacted to, even without a helmet. I've always hit them, god knows where the ball went, but protected my head. That clearly can't last.

I top edged a half tracker from a slow medium bowler into my face when I was younger. Always worn a lid since then as its just not worth the risk, even at a poor standard with slower bowling anyone can play a bad shot or get a bit of an unlucky bounce no matter how good they are.

After what happened to Boucher if I did keep wicket I'd wear a lid for that too.

My view is that nobody on here would bat without gloves, to me wearing a lid isn't that much different to wearing gloves.

Last year's winter nets, we had a slow and fast net, and there were two incidents of guys being carted off to hospital to get there faces seen to after top edging into their faces, both in the slow net, both not wearing helmets... No injuries in the fast net though. Extra bounce of the Oval tracks caught them out I'd guess, whereas people expect it bouncy from the quicks.

The three times I've taken blows around the face/head have all been the kind where, to one extent or another, it really didn't matter how good or bad of a cricketer I was:

- standing up to a loopy off spinner who put through a previously unseen quicker ball that went off the top of off stump into my mush.

- ball from a leggie that popped off a length and hit me on the underside of the jaw - not very hard thankfully!

- and then this season, turned after completing a single to see the ball fly up off an onld wicket end, take the edge of the keepers glove and then smack me in the eye - if I hadn't been wearing study gig lamps, I'd have lost the eye I reckon.

So do as I say not as I do....wear a lid!

i think it boils to when we were kids playing, helmets werent compulsory but i think it is an excellent idea that all under 18's have to wear helmets, i think it should be extended to all batsmen, similar to shin pads in footy.

Myself, i never used to wear a lid even after being hit in the head on a few occasions, messing up my teeth and on another occasion breaking my jaw.

However i deceided to don a helemt after moving up a few levels, i sat for 3 motnhs in my house watching tv with it on just to get used to it ... i have even wore it in the bedroom after a special request from a lady!!!

Ironically i have never been hit in 5 seasons since wearing one.

I can go quite easily without wearing shin pads in Football.
Lad said yesterday he'd forgotten his, so without thinking offered mine up.

It's only recently I have started due to the advances in shin pads, never used to like the feel, you always knew they were there. Nowadays they are very light weight.

Last Saturday I was playing like an midget and was trying to sweep the first ball of leg spinner. Surprisingly the ball got extra bounce (don't know how) and I got top edge onto chin then grill. Thank God that I always wear a chin strap otherwise it would have done some damage.

I was having some discussion with Tom on Twitter on Saturday over this.

People overlook good helmet due to price but little do they realize it is one off (or long term) invest unlike a 400 quid bat.

There is this guy in my club who is very proud and confidently says he has never worn a box and played cricket. He is a young lad, 19 I suppose. I tried explaining him in amiable manner but then he never took it importantly. I told him, it will take just one delivery, but he is being stubborn lol. I don't wish to be mean nor I intend too but then I hope he learns a lesson sooner or later, I remember in summer I got hit by a tape ball and i couldn't stand for next five minutes so may God protect him lol

Then there was this guy who is left hand batsman but wears right hand pads, he worn them throughout the season. Then due to lack of side protection he got hit one or two times by me, later he had massive bruise. Not my fault that you were wearing wrong pads, its not that anyone in UK or Canada can't afford proper pads, anyone even on government funding can afford it.

Sorry for that rant :/

I'll be honest, what has got me thinking is the possibility of top edging it into my face rather than being bounced to death. I've seen it happen and you always sort of think, well it won't happen to me. But, only last season, similar scenario, slightly different result, had a mow at a high full toss from a slow bowler and bottom edged it onto my stumps - when I think about it, I could just as easily have top edged it...

very rarely don't wear one.

heard to many stories from misty eyed old men recounting the time where they top edged a slow bowler in to their chevy chase.

helmets will become more and more frequent as the current generation, for whom it was compulsory to wear one as a youth, grow old.

Agree totally that you should always wear a lid.

Was standing up to the stumps on a low, slow wicket, no lid. Never even considered getting hit in the face whilst keeping before, assumed my hands would do their job and catch the ball. Considered a helmet necessary to prevent damage from someone's bat cracking my head, as i trusted my reflexes (and the opposition) i didn't think this was going to happen.

Opposition were on the ropes but a real limpet of a number 9 was batting well, leaving everything possible to try and see out the remaining overs to prevent us from having 60 odd overs to chase down 90. He was really getting his front pad out there, really planting it a long way down and getting his hands in the air. One ball turned a fair bit further than previous deliveries and flicked up off the top of his pad right into my face.

Fractured my front tooth just above the gumline. I bent it back into place and finished the game, then went to hospital, where they fixed it into place temporarily and suggested i went to the dentist asap.

Nearly 6 months, and 3 dentist trips later, i had a £400 bill for root canal work which will keep my tooth intact for a maximum of 10 years. After it disintegrates i'll need a titanium implant replacement tooth, and i'll be lucky to get change out of a grand.

Helmet costs what, roughly £100? Don't take the risk.

Going back to original topic, I had never really thought too much about it, but you very rarely see pro's without lids, until yesterday when two England players (Luke Wright was one) both wore caps in the T20 game.  As did another in the Big Bash.

Personally, I very rarely wear a lid. The standard I currently play in does not have bowlers quick enough, whilst the pitches played on are generally very good.

I can't hook, so if it ever gets that high I don't

Had to wear a helmet in colts cricket and have never stopped wearing it. Have witnessed a number of cases of people top edging the ball into their face.

One severely split open his lip and the other knocked himself out.

Also had a guy duck into a short delivery and fractured his skull.

This was the exact discussion I has with someone at the recent BSI meeting in October that all the helmet manufacturing brands attended with the view of improving the current safety standards come 2013.

All well and good saying bowling isn't quick enough/pitches don't bounce enough but no matter what bowling or pitch you won't avoid a top edge to your face.

Unless you block all day!

There was a guy we were playing against on an astro strip. Our bowler bowls him a half volley which he smashes for a four, then he takes off his helmet, seeing that the pitch isn't really bouncy. Next ball, the bowler bowls a half tracker, which keeps low, and the guy tries to pull it and top edges it into his nose. I think this event happened when I was relatively new to cricket, so it has made me always wear a lid no matter what! :-[

I've tried to wear a helmet for years, but could never get used to the grill in my eye line. I've tried different brands of lid, positioning the grill where it wouldn't even protect my face and still can't get on with it. I keep trying to give it a go in the nets as I've been hit in the face twice. The first time I needed 7 stitches and still have the scar to this day. Finally decided that I might try something a bit more old school. I've managed to get hold of some poly-carbonate so I'm going to attempt making some ear guards like back in the days of Gooch and Smith. Failing that I'll just stick with the old faithful cap and hope for the best!  ;)

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the ear guards for Masuri's anymore? I sent an email to them a while ago but they no longer manufacture them.

Those type of things, including the full Perspex grilles are no longer manufactured by anyone, and may even be banned, due to their tendency to shatter quite dramatically!

Nothing really, I just can't get used to the grill. I suppose in that sense I'm a bit old school.  I've never worn a helmet but am aware that as I get older the chances of getting hit are greater. Plus its like holding a red rag to a bull walking in against an opening quick with no lid on.
I've fitted a C&D grill today to see if that's any better as it seems to have a lot more adjustment than the Masuri.

I'll let you know. I just know I'll end up wearing my cap again all season.  :)

red rag to a bull for an opening bowler?? I think it actually shows your not afraid of them personally, your almost saying 'mate, I'd put a lid on but with you being so darn slow I can't really be bothered' :)

It's my way of knowing when to put one on or not.. If your a bowler and you see my wearing it it's because I think you could do me damage.. If I wander in without it (most games) it's because you ain't gonna get me even if you tried.

What I meant was that since i'm a club cricketer and have a day job perhaps its time I got used to wearing one. At the end of the day I've never worn one so it really makes no odds what the bowler thinks. :D

I always wear one as previously stated a 1 day hospital trip after top edging a spinner and scare to prove it.

You are right of course, we all have day jobs and like you say.. might as well use them and be safe than risk it. I've also decided this year to wear it no matter what.

I'm the same, I've never worn a helmet until this season. Mind you I haven't played for about 12 years and close to nudging 40...

It was really weird batting with one a first. I had a really hard time seeing the ball properly and was always late on my shots. But it's slowly getting better. My advice would be to just go for one with a proper grill and net with it as much as you can. The sooner you do it, the sooner you'll get used to it. Then once you're comfortable, wear it in games.

I've been trying that for the last 2 years now. It got so bad at one point last season that even the bowlers told me to take it off.
Guess they felt sorry for me!  :(

I've always been made to wear one.  It feels weird without a lid on, just like it feels weird not wearing a bandanna under my lid.
Only time I've gone without in a match was on a sunday last season, against a practically the same team we had played against the day before on a pudding of a pitch that had been used the day before too.

When I started playing again 2 seasons ago I didn't wear a helmet mainly as I only lasted two balls if they bowled at the stumps.

Now that I last a bit longer the helmet has been on
saved me from a top edge last season, so I can't grumble.

Ok, in my on going quest to find something that works "personally" for me in regards to wearing a lid, I've decided to try fitting a C&D grill to my Masuri. The older style grill from the centurion helmet has allot more adjustment than the Masuri, so i'm going to give it a go in the nets next week. As you can see from the pictures, it still wont keep ball from giving me a black eye but might save me an expensive trip to the dentist!  ;) In which case is still going to give more protection than my cap!

It's the club badge, minus the text above and below. The guy that does our embroidery has started doing helmet stickers now.
Not as good as a stitched badge but I thought it looked ok!

I am sipping my tea in considerable agony here due to a busted lip after an attempted catch diving forward that I didn't quite get to....... should you weather a helmet in the field to protect from these incidents?

Its these types of impacts that can happen off of a slow dibbly dobbler that can catch you out. A lad who purchased a helmet off of us sent through some images on Twitter from where he got hit following a top edge and had to have a metal plate inserted in his face. The upward angle of the impact dosnt help issues :(

Despite him being hurt I would say he is EXTREMELY lucky that he was wearing this lid, if you see his West Indies helmet it has ample of space for a ball to sneak in.

Wish him all the best. A nasty dreadful blow!

This was pre-helmet as we had to make him a custom helmet due to his larger than average size swede.

Ouch. Not seen that Marlon clip before. Doesn't say much for the new Masuri grill/helmet combination either...

After just having been to the dentist for yet more treatment after being hit by a top edge 18 years ago I'd definitely recommend wearing a lid.

Had to have a tooth extracted last year and I've luckily been accepted for a dental implant to replace it. Hopefully once thats sorted I'll stop having problems and be able to bit into stuff properly again.

If only I'd had an ayrtek when I was 16........

I'll also be investing in a helmet for the coming season, after a top edge left me needing stitches & unable to work for 3 days.

Never really worn one regularly, though with moving up to open and reading this thread I think that's my 'must do' for this season...

I haven't worn one since I was a kid. I never liked wearing one then, always found it limited my vision and never felt comfortable with one.

Considering getting one as I'm playing Saturday league cricket this season

Me and my fellow coach ran a district session today and we are trying to teach the children how to best play indoor cricket. So we went on a team each. I was facing 12 year olds so initially didn't have my helmet on, but just before I batted I put it on. Whilst facing the other coach I jammed a ball into the ground and it came back up into my grill. Glad I wore it!
