I think before grip/sticker/scuff etc it's 2'10 ie. the smallest weight they come in, those lot and a very wet box have moved it to just over 2'12 finished. Wouldn't be surprised if it settles to 2'11 after it's wet journey.

It was hammering down and the postman made me get it out and check for damage the parcel was so wet. One side of the box was completely sodden, I imagine they left it on a wet surface for a long time. Another terrific example of royal mail tlc!. Bat was damage free thanks to the bubble wrap :-)

Yes really pleased with it Matt and many thanks for getting mine out first. When I pulled it out of the box it was an OMG moment. Seriously big enough to scare young children and animals. I dread to think what the heavyweight versions are like. Not really tapped it too hard yet I'm giving it the soft knocking in treatment at the moment. Most impressive thing is the 30mm edges and pretty thick toe, combined with a massive spine (75mm?). The dimensions are staggering.

what does she pick up like?

not to bad at all. I had a quick waft with the gloves on and it didn't seem particularly bottom heavy, despite all that wood in the bottom half. My GM Icon+ has big thick shoulders which makes it a joy to pickup, but takes the wood away from the hitting area. Taking the weight off the edges into the spine, in my opinion, helps the pickup. I've lifted many worse 2'10+ bats.

I thought this might be interesting. A GM Icon+ with 35mm/67mm spine height compared to the tempo. Bigger edge profile on the Icon but look at the swell/spine and the shoulders.

18th or 25th - whichever!
18th is you think you can get it knocked in enough?
We'll be using machine balls so no bat breakers!!

18th might be ok for bowling machine balls. Depends how much knocking in time I get before then.

i was tempted by one of these when i saw the release pics a month or so back.Im a big fan of the MH Disitnction.

I think this falls slightly short of that but the price is half that of the Distinction so i think this is a very good investment.

Im waiting on a very very special bat to arrive, (not sure if it is a 2013 production model) when i get it we'll have a bat off :)

Title: Re: Helloooo Big Boy
Post by: uknsaunders on November 07, 2012, 09:46:34 AM
I bounced a soft old DF Ball on it and it left a seam mark. Yes it does need knocking in. Done 15-20 mins so far, just light tapping.

GarrettJ - tricky to compare the two unless they are side by side. The H4L, from what I've seen of Distinctions, has a bigger edge profile and similar spine height.  You're right though, it sits in a very nice price segment with no challengers and M&H could be losing some business in 2013. Performance wise I don't think a comparison can be made until the end of the 2013 season and even then you would of had to use both bats to make such an opinion. Being a H4L I'm sure it will perform.

must be pressed soft then if an old ball is leaving marks :S all the h4l's i had had a clear scuff sheet on and brand new balls didnt mark them :)

i usually just smash toe and edges for 10 mins and use them, never touch the middle

did a bit of gentle tapping today and it obviously sounds good. Middle is probably goes from a couple of inches up from the toe to just below the stickers. Not surprising given the spine. However, even tapping close to the edges it seemed pretty good but as I've already mentioned, it has around 30mm edges. 20mins down, 220 to go  :P

pretty much knocked in and I had a go on the bowling machine last night. Though the performance of the bat was severely limited by my ability, some nice healthy push drives pinged out of middle. Didn't fancy using it in the bowlers net just yet, so it's early days but the signs look good.

Pete, Jason, Marcus, Bruce all had a look at it so it would be good to hear their honest views.

I used the bat against the bowling machine last night.
The middle is extremely long and pretty responsive too, and will only get better and better and the bat is played in over the next month or two! It picks up really well and feels nice when using it.
Basically a quality bat which I would definitely recommend! The future's looking pukka!  8)

cheers for whoever gave me the tip about 2 grips. Not my preferred setup but it does help the pickup. Feels about 2oz lighter. Had 2 grips before on other bats and doesn't normally make that much difference but seems to this time. Going to have to find an orange chevron double thickness grip now!

Going to nets tomorrow night with the tempo. Update tomorrow evening!

I didn't really word it as well as I could do. I mean I only play about 4/5 games a season atm. And I can't warrant spending £200 on a bat for the time being, due to the limited number of games I play. :(

Well, when I start my new job in a few weeks, Matt may be finding an order being placed...

Tried the Tempo tonight. Well, when I say tried it was in the context of a poorly lit hall with 80% of deliveries wide down leg or into the side netting. The guys I netted with are friendly team and with the odd exception aren't very good. Anyway, those I could see/reach/hit flew off the middle. I've not hit the ball that hard in a while. Just a shame it totalled about 4 shots, the rest I could reach were poked around with no real force. I might have a net at Headingley Weds and one at Warwick School Sunday to do a proper assessment. On the bright side Paul Smith (ex-warwicks) coached us and was very impressed with my bat collection  :)

What was Smith like as a coach Nick?  His book is a great read, you get the feeling from it that he is still bitter towards the ECB about the lack of support he got after his drug ban

Just received my new 3lb 2oz Hellfire! Knocking it in furiously as I have a game next week! Initial thoughts after bouncing a new ball off it are..........bleep me this thing is amazing!

Had a go twice more this week. Had a net with the headingley guys at Headingley and apart from one inside toe shot to a bat breaker everything felt good. Used it this morning on a slow low matting surface and it felt very good. Only drawback this morning was the slow surface and my impatience! Off side shots didn't really work for me but a few wristy flicks through leg seemed rocket off. Only observation I have is unless I got a thin nick or right at the toe, I couldn't tell an off centre shot or a shot hit high or lowish - it all seemed to go.

fyi - Fros. Paul Smith seemed a good bloke and stayed for a beer in the bar after nets. He took me to one side at the end of the session and apologised for my team mates lol, explaining they are lovely guys but not great cricketers and I'll have to be patient playing with them!

Interesting observation.
I found with my Tempo that shots around the area from point to extra cover seemed to slide of the face more.
I've a feeling it's the fact that it's not a flat face.

In a net it is hard to see how far and with what speed the ball will travel. Will it breach the ring so you can get the single?
The benefit and main reason behind me getting a Tempo s to see the extra value of the increased mass.

It will be interesting to see how they perform in match conditions.

problem I have at the moment is it takes me a few weeks to get that left elbow up and stop sticking in the right hand. Not helped by some of the lollipop I've faced in warwickshire and the slow matting. Stuff I should be driving through extra is going through midwicket! Just get there very early lol . Played some lovely on drives but off side not clicked yet. Wasn't a problem on Weds in Headingley, as all the guys are reasonable bowlers and the surface is much quicker with decent bounce.

It takes a while to wait until the ball in under your eyes. I find that's a 'trust your technique', almost a Jedi thing (when Luke puts on the blast goggles for the first time).
I sound like a right spanner saying that, but I know what I mean........haha

How's the relationship between you two coming along? I'm very interested in your comments a 2lb 14 Tempo is a front runner for me as my next bat.

I've got a 3lb 1oz and 2lb 14oz Tempo. Just do it! I did and am loving it.

They pick-up very well indeed and go like a train.
My 3lb 'er is appallingly good. You will find yourself smearing the bowling, spanking length balls from the top of the bounce.
All irrelevant when we get outdoors and the balls is stuck on a green top!

Still, you should call Matt right away and fill your boots.

PS. The warranty's are rather good.

good actually. I'm getting use to the weight and it does go like stink after a sessions playing it in. The long spine helps breed confidence as I have hit loads above centre but they still ping. Normally my back foot play suffers with heavier bats but this one seems to swing better than it initially picks up. Having a 1.5 or 2 grip setup helps. Mine's a 2'12 btw.

Bringing up an oldish topic....but how has this been performing for you during the season? After picking up a custom MH from on here (distinction profile) I am kinda intrigued by the Tempo. If I can sell a few of my bats I'm thinking a Tempo will be on the way....

I was at H4L last week. Matt's got some really good, and at great weights, Tempo's made-up ready to go.

What’s the pickup of the bat like?
I am really thinking about getting one but without the possibility of picking one up and playing a little air cricket I’m finding it hard to take the leap.

it's interesting as I find it a little bottom heavy with just 1 grip, but it's slightly heavier than my normal bats. with 1.5-2 grips it seems pretty balanced. Certainly a few team mates have said it picks up really well and better than similar weight bats.

lol nearly had a hernia last time I picked up one of your cheeky little 2'13's! It feels nowhere near as heavy as the Simdog tree trunk.
