On Wednesday night at our net session, one of the Kent Women U-19s was batting in the net next to ours. Talking to the coach, she has represented England at U19s as a bowler (she's about 5'4" and apparently hits around 75mph). What was far more disconcerting was the significant difference in the batting performance versus our net. Lucky old me was the first person batting and boy did she put me to shame. And she's a bowler.
While the first thought that goes through your head in that situation is "How was I never this good?", and then the second was "Maybe I should just give it all up".... It does show the significant gulf in ability that exists at the different levels.
Have you had any experiences like this?
-
Have netted with Jimmy Anderson - and my first thought was "How has he scored more than 4 runs in a test match?". He asked for the machine on 80mph, and was clean bowled the first 2 balls as he tried to smack them over cow and missed the next. We brought it back to 65mph and he ended up playing a little better. It was a net in front of a bunch of school kids, and I think he was trying to impress.
Netted with Kevin Pietersen who makes it look so so easy. I'm there playing and missing against a 70mph BOLA. And he waltzes in to have a go with my 'Goose, asks to borrow my gloves, sticks it up to 75mph in his jeans with no pads and effortlessly hits it to all parts.
-
You have netted with KP :o
-
Used to net withan england u19s bowler at school, he is very quick and tall. In school cricket he was top order think he bats 9 for england!
-
Used to see a few of the yorkies net at Headingley. Adil Rashid last year had the bola on 70+ and was busy smacking it all over the shop. The netting is tight to avoid balls flying through but we were 2 nets down and nearly got hit a few times, such was the power.

Topley?
-
I was young at the time but when Stuart broad was at Leicestershire I netted with him, also netted with a couple of other Leicestershire players at the cricket academy one being hoggard
-
Raj Maru, the Hampshire legend, used to launch tennis balls at me at what felt like 90mph during S.E Hants coaching sessions...
-
Raj coached me at school too. Decent coach too. he bought one of his hampshire mates to a net with us, none of us got close to getting him out!
-
I played against raj for Somerset board v hampshire board. Hit him flush on the shin when he was fielding at silly point !!
Faced Andy Caddick in the nets and in a match. Hit him for six over point. He was only coming off a few paces. Needless to say he was not pleased and ripped my middle stump out next ball !!

haha i batted next to him felt well (No Swearing Please)!
he hit me on the leg with one of balls
"sorry mate"
you bloody well will be pal lol

I've been alongside Matt Maynard in a net a few years back and I've still never heard anything like it. His timing was impossibly good! Most pros train all year round to keep up a standard like that but he seemed to be very much in the "see ball, hit ball, unbelieveable eye" mould.

During our Aussie season we get many county cricketers playing in our domestic comp and in this time i have played against a few.
A few moons (years) back, i came up against a young Moeen Ali (i think his name was) and from memory he was the Englands U/19 captain. Quality bat for an 18 year old in our first grade, dominated us for a quick fire 40. Came up against Michael Carberry about 5 years back and took his wicket quite cheaply after he couldn't handle a few overs of my away swing (was a good scalp, at the time). Played with Luke Proctor (Lancs) when he was 18 after we secured his services at our club - he has something special about him as an allrounder and set the club record for runs in a season - keep an eye on this lad....
Also played against Masceranus (hampshire) about 8 years back and at the time he was quick and a destructive batsman, who hits a hard ball.
Another interesting player i have came up against about 8 years back, was an Australian international indoor cricketer, who also played outdoor. Probably the most differcult bowler i have every faced - could make the ball talk both ways and at high speed (130km +) off 4/5 paces (unbeliveable).
What gets me about all these guys, is the time they have when batting - they pick the ball up early and play like time has slowed down... The shot making is effortless.

I played with proctor in the rep sides in perth in 2005/2006 ish. was class then, odd action but decent pace and scored buckets of runs. your not based in perth are you? cant remember what side he played for. think it began with an S.

Who was the ozzie indoor player mate? Wasnt one of the Otto brothers was it?? Faced one of them who played for Australia Indoor in outdoor cricket, he also played for QLD 2nd's, I was 17 at the time and shitting myself he bowled 130km/hr plus as well. Played against Bell Drummond in a Kent Premier League game, he tore us apart.....awesome eye and could place the ball anywhere he wanted. Geoff Paulsen used to play at the same club as me too when I was a youngin, he played for Australian Country and has also had a couple of successful stints in the Kent Prem League. He is a super talent with the bat.
-
I am based in Perth and i was the one who got him over - at the time i was the overseas recruiter. Since then we have forged an alliance with a couple of your league teams (Neston and Royton), swapping players to and from each year. Prior to that i used to get players thru your local play-cricket website.
Luke is over here at the moment playing Grade cricket and unfortunately we couldn't get his services again because Lanc's threw a spanner in the works.
Our club is Swan Athletic CC in the WASTCA comp.
He bowls decent wheels at the moment and the thing that gets me, is that Lanc's treats him more as a bowler, however i see him as a batter given his record here scoring runs.

The indoor cricketer was named Nick Degrys - all the talent in the world, but a confused character. Was earmarked to join the Western Australian squad as a 20 year old, but lacked discipline. He is one of those journey man players who play at a club for 2 years then goes somewhere else - wasted talent.
-
Google Nick Degrys and you will see what i mean - he is on youtube as the Aussie captain

I knew it started with an S. I Played for Bentley in the same comp. Played carlton colts and wastca rep sides on a sunday. opened the bowling with proctor a couple of times. i made him look rapid lol. loved perth

Yes, and even 9, 10, jack can do it!

Lee Savident came with him a few times, as did Lawrie Prittipaul. Stan Rudder was my godfather, another Hampshire hero and amazing bloke. He was an incredible bowler. Not sure if you know any of this lot Buzz?
-
Seen a lot of the Somerset players net, and all look really good and 'effortless'.
When it comes to in a match, the best timer of a ball I've seen is Tim Hancock who played for Gloucestershire for about 12 years. Hit 70odd in a game last year and some of his cover drives were unreal!

to be honest, not really no! :o
-
Batted next to Strauss and Fawad Alam at my club, its ridiculous how hard they hit the ball! Fawad had the bowling machine at 18 yards facing 80mph
-
to be fair the bats they are using make a huge difference...
(cough)

... they appear to have a ball magnet in the middle... which naturally is absolutely huge...
(double cough) ;)

timing is everything power is nothing :)

I have netted with someone who went on to be a Wisden Player of the year in 2009 and who played 15 tests for England, 126 ODI and 27 T20 games for England

Claire Taylor?
-
Claire Taylor?
Correct; I used to go to coaching sessions at the Oval on a Friday night. At the time she didn't have the brute strength that some of the men had, but more than made up for it in technique and timing.
-
Here you go Steve. You played a decent standard and lots of your games on cricket archive.
Ricardo Ellcott now he was rapid.

-
I love cricket archive it's a fantastic website. Yes very good 50 second knock. Was it No helmets then ?
-
Makes it an even better knock Steve. Ricky could bowl 90mph with ease.
Yes that is one advantage , the higher level you play the better the tracks are. Once you get it , fill your boots.
-
Quickest I faced was probably Andre Van Troost. Quick, erratic and aggressive. Not a nice combo. Flintoff says in his book that he was the fastest he ever faced. And he almost killed jimmy Adams.
Yes same here. Get a trade said my dad. Thanks for that !!!

Walsh did for you on this day Steve. But Tony Merrick he was another very nasty fasty !!!
-
Bit random this and off on a tenant I see PV Simmons playing he was seriously quick as well
Steve bloody hell small world I see you used to play at Tod well
-
Steve has got Bevan out in his time
-
Any one else on cricket archive ?
-
Wow Steve, you faced the greatest fast bowler of all time (in my book) facinating stuff. Those fast bowlers of the 80's were in a different league, so may quick bolwers and no limit on bouncers and batsman with no helmets !!!
I notice you played with and agiant a friend of mine Andy Spiller, do you remember him ? Bowled left arm chinamen.
Van Troost was quick and on a club wicket at Taunton was not much fun !!
My Brother in Law, tells me the fastest he ever faced was Alan Donald, in fact he walked in one game when he apealed for a caught behind. Matt had not hit it but when the umpire gave it not out he decided it was best to walk off anyway !!! (wimp)
-
Andy played for the NCA and The Combined Services. Its was along time ago Steve !!
Yes I agree, always prefer to face someone with a traditional action where you can see the ball all the way. Van Troost was all over the place which made it ever worse. He was banned from bowling in the nets at Taunton as it would be bouncer, beamer, full toss, yorker, leg side wide, off side wide and then one the rips you off stump out and sents it 20 yards back !!!
-
Is it true he once bowled a bouncer and it hit the sight screen on the full
-
Yes so they say, not sure if its true or not, but they say he was probably the fastest white bowler ever to play the game and I guess if he was going to d it Taunton is the best place with the short straight boundaries.
Probably a beamer was more likely !!!
-
Not so keen on the old batting was Andre!
-
Any of you come across a Australian called chris killed or the saffa badenhorst
Both were ruddy rapid killer was crazy hit him for 4 and he skulled you
Badenhorst got banned for bowling beamers
-
Oh I forgot the best one. When I was 40 my dear friend Ottis Gibson hit me through the visor and fractured my cheek bone and eye socket. Best of it was he was on our side and we were in the nets before the game. Wearing a helmet it went straight through and never touched the visor. Who needs helmets!
ouch....
Only been hit on the head once and that was my brother inlaw in the nets at Taunton, he wasnt my bother in law at the time and didnt like the fact that i was going out with his sister !! lots of chin music.
-
Its a shame that more of the pros don't play club cricket now, it would definitely get more people down watching local sides.
-
The only thing I can say to that is that my missus gives me far more pain than any cricket ball ever did.
I had to look , memory has gone now, Andy Spiller was from 1980 two years before. I was only 17 then!!! Now that was a long time ago.
Kieron did you ever get the opportunity to play o the Taunton ground?
Yes Steve, played there a fair few time mainly for the county board x1 and for my club side Ilminster in lots of club cricket finals.
Still hold the record for the fastest 100 at Taunton.
-
It's was just my day in that game Steve. You get those days when you middle everthing without even thinking about it. I hit 12 sixes and got my ton off 41 balls. Chasing 180 we got them with 2 over spare (20/20 game)
I got 70 odd in the final the following year.
Also had a first baller there for Somerset board x1 against Devon so not all good memories !!!
-

I have played against Lee a few times.
Also saw Gatting net a few years ago at Lords before we went in, he still seemed to enjoy having a bat but looked very red when he finished!
-
We are quite spoiled in Perth, I got to net with the Aussies a few times at the WACA via club contacts and we regularly have county/internationals play at club level...in the past we have had Al Stewart, Solanki, Kabir Ali, Darren Mitchell, Stephen Moore plus the locals lads Katich, Moody, Julien.
I kept to Kabir when he was over after shoulder surgery but I missed his first game..he came on first change my first game, skipper at 1st slip "best take a few steps back" me "really skip, 1st change off 10 paces...ok then" queue a rapid 80mph bouncer first ball and a batsmen with stain underwear!
I saw Nick DeGrys mentioned early...I grew up playing him on astro turf wickets.....scary, crazy bowler...rapid at 18 on turf let alone astro...breathed relief when he came to same district club as me :)
-
Ive bowled at Keith Bell (Ian's brother) at nets before. Very good bat tbh, easily the best ive bowled at. Never got him out but did beat the bat a couple of times.

Played all the way through school with Keith, was a very good player and I know he played quite a bit for Warwickshire 2s. I always thought he would make it as I thought he was as good as Graham Wagg who I also played against.
Still remember when Keith ran me out for a duck in a school game though. :(
-
Yes a lot of the dutch boys and all the dutch girls.
and when i was younger brendan and nathan Mccullum and Tendo.
Fielding session with sussie rowe and lydia greenway
Netting session with sian ruck
-
He wasn't an international at the time, but yes, Mike Atherton at school
-
Not really the same but a few of our lads at the club are in the junior county side and when India were last over for their tour they spent an afternoon bowling at tendulkar, apparently an absolute top bloke!
-
Played against James Kirtley and Ed Giddins indoors, got Kirltey out LBW for 0.
-
Sachin tendulkar's son plays at my club for a couple of months each summer so guess who I've been up at the nets with! I can say I've bowled Tendulkar even if its his son right? ;)
-
Eh sorry didn't see how old this is :P
-

My brother played for MCC YC's, and was on duty when Tendulkar first toured England in the early nineties. He was asked along with others to bowl at the little master. My Bro was an opening bowler who bowled at decent pace. However, after not too long he was asked to vacate the net for not being good enough. I'll add that Ed Giddins was on the staff at the time and also got chucked out of the net along with my Bro !
