A few people have asked about the batting book I have written.
If you are interested in taking a look, it can be downloaded here
http://www.getsomepixels.co.uk/Batting%20book%20v5.pdf (http://www.getsomepixels.co.uk/Batting%20book%20v5.pdf)
I hope it is useful, please get in touch if you have any questions.
It is still a work in progress in some sections, buy thanks to Paul and Steve (you know who you are! ;)) for your comments

Really good read so far Buzz, I'm sure I will have plenty of questions once I have gone through it all.
-
Buzz that's a very good read, particularly the bit about bowling machines I like! Thanks a lot!
-
no worries, i am glad you like it :)
It will remain a work in progress so if there are any suggestions, please give me a shout!!
-
2nd failed attempt to download
do i need to create an account ?
2nd pop up downloads ilivid.exe
-
I had to sign up for a 4shared account, which made me a bit uneasy.
-
sorry, that isn't supposed to happen.
If anyone wants a copy, please PM me with your email address and I will send it too you
-
Received the book in email
thanks
-
Sent you a PM mate. Would love to read it. Thanks
-
Had this for a while now and really helped me...not sure if I have one of the first issues though!
-
It hasn't changed much JNC
I have, I think emailed everyone who has asked, if you haven't got a copy and you are expecting it, please drop me a pm
Happy reading!!

Is there a charge for this buzz? The link wont open up at work for some reason.
Thanks

Cheers Buzzster, much appreciated.

Thanks
no charge, pm me with your email address and I will send it too you
-
Now that is a gentleman's offer. Thanks buzz.
-
Thanks Buzz, that's a good read.
I'd already noted your disapproval of the trigger just as I was considering trying it - and didn't. Now, on your recommendation, I think I'll revert to my original side on stance, having tried opening up, without much success.
Also, from reading your book, I think I'm trying to experiment with too many variables. That is a useful insight.
Thanks.
-
glad you like it!!
-
I've had two ducks in two innings now, one which was my fault, another which I would have never been able to play... I have to give this book a read again, and like some batsman previously said, he couldn't tell if he was on form or not because he hadn't spent enough time in the middle! At least it made me realise that a £300+ bat can't score you runs anymore than a £100 one can!
-
Can't seem to send a pm if you would be so kind as to send a copy to me that would be great as after a 20 year hiatus any help would be great.
Thanks
Ian
-
Ignore above as i have just received many thanks Buzz.
-
Just read it while at work :-)
Lots of good stuff, particularly liked the bit on getting the right mind set and mentally preparing to score big.
I'm glad I didn't read it on a match day though, I would have far too many thoughts running through my head going out to bat.
-
Any chance someone could email me the book to kennyhirst@hotmail.com
Sounds like a great read that I'm sure will help, can't make me any worse!
-
I think I have it somewhere mate, if you haven't got it by next week, I'll scan it and send it you
-
Sounds like an interesting read! Is there any way of getting a copy please?
-
I have emailed it to those who have asked for it.
-
Hi Buzz
Looking forward to reading your book. Not sure where one is meant to end up with the link, I got a 20 sec notification page but it did not count-down or download. I then clicked on the download option which took me to the sign-up for a free account page.
I will PM you with my email also.
cheers
-
Buzz you sent me my one nearly 18months ago. Has it been updated since? If so, would like a copy.
Thanks
-
Buzz, would you like me to add to the how to score a hundred section ;)
thanks coach :)

canners, score another next week and I will think about it...

Would you mind sending me a copy, would love to take a look?

Thanks buzz, picked up some useful tips in there

glad you like it, happy to keep emailing it around.

Excellent read, amazing how uncomplicated a plan at the crease can be.
I think the form part and the imaginary line outside of stump are points well made. A lot of the time in our cricket its a full toss or half volley that quickly puts you in the right frame of mind to score
What got you yo the point of writing it buzz?

Glad you like it - I wrote the book because I was giving some advice to people on here and doing some coaching and I had a long train journey and started putting it all down on paper. It was at a time also when there were some decent technical articals around which I used to back up my thoughts.
I also believe that coaching helps players understand their own faults. As a result i would say my technique now is better than it has ever been - shame my body is falling apart!!
-

I believe I am a much worse player now than I was before I coached lol. Now I over-analyse and try to make everything look good as opposed to being very successful at see-ball, hit-ball. Interesting how different minds use knowledge differently isn't it?
-
Alternatively - we started from a different point - before I coached, i used to overanalyse everything and beat myself up for not hitting the half volley. Batting became a load easier when I stopped caring and embrased the moo over cow for what it is... the most effective shot in cricket!!
-
looking fwd to read it too..tried downloading but cudnt :( ... my email is mujjuhssn@yahoo.com please

Hi all thanks to a kind forum member, I have been able to host the book on an easier to download website.

cheers buzz, as someone who's still waiting for their maiden hundred i found the relevant chapter usefull
my problem is that i'm terrified of getting out and feel the pressure of not scoring quickly enough, that and until recently not having the opportunity at the top of the order to bat the 35 overs or so i'd need to get near a ton
after a decent knock of 60 not out opening the batting i've made the position my own so have more of a shot at it
any tips to overcome this fear of getting out?
-
in simple terms, you need to ensure the confidence you have in your shots out ways your fear.
try to develop two or three strong and simple scoring options and practice them really hard.
or bat at 11 when you will have a better than 50% chance of being not out
-
'ditch the trigger'
Thanks for that gem.
I've been LBW each knock this season for one main reason, I introduced a 'back and across' movement into my game over the winter.
I'll go back to my simple technique which has served me well the past number of years.
Cheers Buzz. Well written, simple, and easy to consume.
-
Hi Buzz,
Great book.
One thing about scoring hundreds that Ganguly once said in an interview was
"never think about getting a hundred. It would mean you have to bat for 6 hours. The moment you start doing that it becomes too big a task to accomplish.
The best way to do it just think about is taking one run and getting off strike"
This and may be keeping a target of how many balls you will be playing today without getting out might be really useful in scoring big runs if not hundreds.
-
Buzz,
Fantastic book, had a read yesterday as i'm not the greatest batsman and I picked up a lot of useful tips.
Thanks again
-
I think that is fair enough.
I think you should aim to be scoring a hundred and havea plan how you will do that. I apprecaite that that could give you accusations of batting like Jonathan Trott - but the reality in club cricket if someone scores a hundred then their team rarely lose.
Having the mindset which says - if I bat for 35 overs, I will score a hundred I find takes the pressure off and I am then able to focus on getting through one over at a time and not worring about how many I am on.
With all these things it is important to think about what works for you and to ignore the rest.
-
i got out on 70 on sunday :(
i felt like i had failed and if id have got 100 we might have won the game.
so its right in what you are saying however i got my 70 in about 15 overs there was 10 overs left to bat :(
-
Used the stand still at the crease thoughts on saturday. My only problem was that I chased a wide one and snicked off! Felt a lot more secure though. And I hope you dont mind buzz I emailed it to a couple of guys who also like to overcomplicate their cricket!
-
Link not working?

Hi, sorry it got taken down, I will email it to you later on. Unfortunately I am phone less at the moment but will sort later.

Thank you.
From what people are saying it's a good read!
-
the reality in club cricket if someone scores a hundred then their team rarely lose.
This is the EXACT mindset I use.
I open the innings for my club side. I am in the accumulator/nurdler (Cook) mould, I know my limits and play within my areas, and I'm by no means blessed with natural timing. BUT...if I bat for 35-40 overs, I will make 70-90 runs, and I believe that gives my team an 80-90% chance of winning the game, as we will score between 180 and 250, which is more than enough on our 'tricky' deck. Job done ;)
Fantastic book. Very useful. I will come back to it and read it often. :)
-
thanks for the email buzz. i will be having a read tonight
-
Could someone DM me the link to the book?
Thanks
-
I too would be interested in a copy/link to this book.
Cheers

Sounds like this book is definitely worth reading - maybe worth reposting the link in the forum rather than lots of separate PM requests

Morning - I have emailed the book to those of you who pm'd me and who requested it above.
Please feel free to pm me if you want a copy.

It comes with a guarantee of improved performance and huge scores for those who follow its advice. *
*so long as they actually have significant amount of practice as well.

Netted without a trigger movement last night. Felt strange at first, but allowed me to concentrate much better on the ball, and I felt less of an LBW 'candidate'. More work needed, but a great tip from the book. Thanks :)

PM me it please.

Good stuff mate
-
Spot on @Buzz, yes very helpful!
-
Great video and very helpful as always. Looking forward to more in future.

Great Video @Buzz
Guilty of this myself, bit daft now I think about it, walking after your shot. Will give it a go at Nets on Thursday.
Is the trampoline part of your fitness regime? ;)
-
I was watching my recent net videos and noticing I'm doing this. Was gonna make a thread regarding but now I don't need to.
Cheers
-
Great stuff @buzz i know i am the biggest culprit of this especially through mid off to cover! Unfortunately it doesnt help having everyone bowl down leg at nets.

Here's AB setting a new world record for saying the word "Box" in 90 seconds. He's right though, his back foot never leaves the floor. How often do you see Pro's walking after their shots? Hardly ever.
-
thanks for posting that video - the ABDV vidoes are brilliant.
Separately I have had a couple of requests for a kitchen coaching clinic - one on driving the ball and hitting the ball on the up and another on the back lift.
If there are any other requests, please let me know.
FYI - the idea is that they are short (less than 2 min) tip sessions which I can do from the confines of my kitchen. I will then seek some other youtube examples of people doing the activity as a demonstration.
-
thanks for posting that video - the ABDV videos are brilliant.
They are excellent videos! I have some software that acts like a box where I keep my videos, in this box and try not to keep anything outside of that box. As long as I keep them in the box then they are safely in the box and I won't lose them outside of the box.
Seriously - great video of AB! And keep the kitchen coaching coming Buzz! Great work :D

Any advice on how to work on not breaking the wrist on the top hand would be good!
Idon't know if I need to shorten my handle, but when I bat sometimes the top of the handle is hititng my lower form arm as my wrist is breaking. If I try keep my wrist locked I feel like a robot.
-
One on backlift would be good, I have a bad habit of collapsing my front elbow and then picking the bat up to 2/3rd slip and bringing it down angled.

Before the explanation I thought you were actually talking about physically breaking your wrist
Ie every time you batted you broke your wrist and had to go to hospital! That would be some mega bad luck or a really poor technique

How about one like ABD's on getting ryhtm before ball is released? Bat tap vs bat swish....pros and cons etc.
-
I found this video and thought it was a good batting drill to share, no the coach is no relation to me, but I like his work... I like the drop feeds and they can be used in lots of different ways. I always have a load of tennis balls to hand, if you don't sports direct have very cheap balls which are ideal.

what are your thoughts on getting ryhtm before ball is released? Bat tap vs bat swish....pros and cons etc. I find bat tapping to be the best way to time the ball and get power, but it throws my head off to the off side.
-
Really personal, but I prefer it to any trigger.
Will think about it and see if I can chat about there next week.
-
Another good couple of videos Buzz, keep em coming.
Loving the slippers, get those spiked up! :D
-
@Buzz thanks for doing those kitchen clinic videos. Can you do one with tips to avoid backing away from while facing a fast bowler. Lately I've developed a bad habit of moving back leg towards square leg when facing a fast bowler. I found this brief video on youtube where Clive Rice talks about the said problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjZI6TfOE44. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjZI6TfOE44.)
It would be great to hear other tricks and tips to avoid this movement.
-
Nice straight back, gonna try that
Cos my backs knackered

Just seen there's going to be an ABDV Masterclass on Sky Sports 2, Friday 18th March, 6pm. Stay tuned!

For anyone that would like to some first hand experience on any of Buzz's help, who are a little 'does he know what he's talking about?'
Here we go...
So for anyone that seen my typical tailender batting, I've been really struggling to hit that 'Ian Bell Cover Drive' so i contacted Buzz on here privately for some little more expertise, his kitchen videos gave me the confidence that he does know how to pin point various part of ones technique.
Buzz pointed out (as well as others on here, credit to them too) that not only do I come across my whole stumps and am a candidate for LBWs and my trigger movement was really late. But one thing i didnt see people comment on is after my trigger movement, I actually close my stance off restricting my shots and any further movement towards the ball.
So i tried a few of his suggestions and i haven't hit a drive sweeter! With some more practice I think i might have a new favourite shot.
Thank you all forumites that have helped!
-
Thanks for sharing these videos @Buzz
Some really good points made and certainly things I'll be aware of when I next bat.
-
thanks Buzz some great info you are putting out there.
-
For you leftie batters out there - enjoy some of Steven Davies in the preseason nets...
https://youtu.be/YM3hkZc0Pqs
-
I have not seen Steven Davies bat before, he does look good I assume an opener?
What I did find interesting that he seem to be using two trigger movements.
In the first net to the quicks? back and across and in the second net possibly the spin net a forward press.
Is this something that everyone does and I have just not notice before???
-
Michael Clarke's first thought to spin was to come down, if it was short he could come back and cut it away if it was a good length he would play it in his slot, as far as i remember
-
A lot of players who have a big back and across trigger to the quicks change it for spin I think, Alec Stewart Ian Bell etc. less need/more lbw risk against spinners maybe.

very helpful these little tutorials, thanks for uploading

Great reminder of what I was doing wrong at end of season 2014. Caught numerous times off leading edge. Now I just play everything through a wide V until the pitches firm up ( in hilly sheffield sometimes they stay soft and low all season)

Also if you are smart enough to find @Buzz 's twitter the link is on there. this was the only one that worked for me!

(all video links are also in the first post, as is a link to my book)

Love the vids and the book
Just a quick question
What are your thoughts, advice on playing shots too early?
For me, I've struggled with wickets that the ball is slow coming onto the bat.
Mainly playing lofted drives.
After a few seasons down sarf now, I tend to just stay back and slap the ball as opposed to coming forward.
I do ok runs wise, and it's not the end of the world, but would just like to hear your thoughts on this
Judging the lack of pace in a wicket, was what I was trying to say.
Many thanks for the pm

Just wanted to give this a quick bump as it hasn't had many views and I don't believe you are all awesome off the back foot!!
-
Hey Buzz, any tips for defending off the hip?
If short leg is in I'd be caught easily, and the length is normally too low to full to pull, to short to drive.
-
Just wanted to give this a quick bump as it hasn't had many views and I don't believe you are all awesome off the back foot!!
I've watched it 3 times (just to enjoy my shoutout) and am still crap at playing the short ball!
That said not being able to grip a bat properly to practice probably doesn't help... :-[
-
@Buzz - Nice read, I've shared with my club teams. Most players are not on this forum. Next step is to review the videos.
-
Just wanted to give this a quick bump as it hasn't had many views and I don't believe you are all awesome off the back foot!!
I've just watched your back foot kitchen video. Good clear advice on feet, grip and eyes. Well worth spending three minutes watching for anyone who needs some help, or fancies a 'refresher'.
Thanks,
David
-
I just watched the vid on back foot defense. Buzz , you said "welcome back to the kitchen".....made me think of The 12th Man /Richie - "welcome back to the M.C.G for the first time today . Players and umpires are out in the centre , and now for his pitch report , here's Tony Greig". I had to watch it a second time because my infantile imagination kept thinking of Tony Greig sticking a key into your kitchen floor and describing the surface as 'hard and fast' . ;)
-
I can confirm there isn't a fountain pen stuck in one of the cracks in the kitchen floor!
-
@Buzz - Good advice on the grips and diamond video.
I have a request. Few of my friends who have been playing tennis ball cricket are joining our junior level team. I taught them how to hold a bat in general batting stance - same step as your grip and diamond video. This worked well for all the straight bat shots - straight drive, on drive etc. When attempting a pull shot or a cut shot, i find that they still have a loose hold of the bottom hand and it results in either loss of power in the shot or bat twists in their hand. When i play the shot i see that my bottom hand does come into play a bit and they are asking me the following questions ...
1. How does the grip and diamond shape work for a cross batted shot (pull or cut) ?
2. Do you change bottom hand grip when playing a cross batted shot ? If so how ?
I explained a bit but one of them told me bluntly you are a bad instructor ... :D
Any advice @Buzz ? Any possibility of a video on this topic ?
-
Good questions.
A video from me may be a while in coming due to work and family commitments, but there is no question you need the power from the bottom hand to hit cross bat shots.
Will give it some thought and see what I can do.

If its of any help
I tend to be all bottom hand attacking being left handed always looking to pull and hook with a normal mid handle grip no need to change. the diamond shape works for me as arms are away from my body which helps bat swing shot momentum if that makes sense.

Yes, your explanation makes sense. I had my friends look at the video of Kane Williamson. He plays a perfect pull shot (video duration - first 30 seconds).

@Buzz, how about judging length - watching hand position and release point technique doesn't work for me. In fact, it doesn't work for anyone I know.
So, how do you judge length early enough to get in position early to make clean contact?

Good suggestion, not sure I can do that in the kitchen, but it comes from learned behaviour over time and instinct.

Will definitely be able to do this.

Also just found this video. https://youtu.be/jz7LhovatHM
So much good stuff in there on feet movement, going forward and back to spin (or slow medium bowling really)

Super video that, shows the clear difference between power hitting and technical strokeplay, the coach in that vodo is opening his front foot and using the power if his hips and glutes to strike the ball a long way.
Important to know both ways to play these days.

@Buzz, how about judging length - watching hand position and release point technique doesn't work for me. In fact, it doesn't work for anyone I know.
So, how do you judge length early enough to get in position early to make clean contact?
It's also about release time ....earlier suggests fuller , later suggests shorter . Release point works for me and most people i know , so if its not working for you it doesn't mean you can't change that .
Something that helped me years and years ago was to get bowling machine practice whereby I'd ask the feeder to change the length occasionally ( subtly, when i wasn't looking ) . I'd have a very brief window/moment before the ball was released to assess the tilt/angle of the machine head . Seeing the change in angle gave a great / obvious indication of where the ball would pitch , and this is the closest that a bowling machine has to a release point. This eyeballing of the tilt/angle started to easily transfer over to gauging actual bowlers release points after a while ...... I can't explain precisely how this occured other than to say the visualization and feel of one transfered to the other . Might be worth a try .

Feel free to suggest some topics (via pm or here) and I will see what I can do.
Time is a bit limited at the moment, however. Having said that when I do the videos it is a case of what is the topic, what am I going to say, then one take and I am done! And, sadly that shows!

All adds to the gritty reality. They're great videos - and a nice kitchen.
