Evening all, this is slightly farcical as the dishwasher is gurgling away in the foreground, but here is a quick kitchen coaching session on grip and the diamond.

Enjoy.

Love the vids and the book
Just a quick question
What are your thoughts, advice on playing shots too early?
For me, I've struggled with wickets that the ball is slow coming onto the bat.
Mainly playing lofted drives.
After a few seasons down sarf now, I tend to just stay back and slap the ball as opposed to coming forward.
I do ok runs wise, and it's not the end of the world, but would just like to hear your thoughts on this

Judging the lack of pace in a wicket, was what I was trying to say.

Many thanks for the pm

Just wanted to give this a quick bump as it hasn't had many views and I don't believe you are all awesome off the back foot!!

Hey Buzz, any tips for defending off the hip?

If short leg is in I'd be caught easily, and the length is normally too low to full to pull, to short to drive.

I've watched it 3 times (just to enjoy my shoutout) and am still crap at playing the short ball!
That said not being able to grip a bat properly to practice probably doesn't help... :-[

@Buzz - Nice read, I've shared with my club teams. Most players are not on this forum. Next step is to review the videos.

I've just watched your back foot kitchen video. Good clear advice on feet, grip and eyes. Well worth spending three minutes watching for anyone who needs some help, or fancies a 'refresher'.

Thanks,
David

I just watched the vid on back foot defense.  Buzz , you said "welcome back to the kitchen".....made me think of The 12th Man /Richie - "welcome back to the M.C.G for the first time today . Players and umpires are out in the centre , and now for his pitch report , here's Tony Greig". I had to watch it a second time because my infantile imagination kept thinking of Tony Greig sticking a key into your kitchen floor and describing the surface as 'hard and fast' . ;)

I can confirm there isn't a fountain pen stuck in one of the cracks in the kitchen floor!

@Buzz - Good advice on the grips and diamond video.

I have a request. Few of my friends who have been playing tennis ball cricket are joining our junior level team. I taught them how to hold a bat in general batting stance - same step as your grip and diamond video. This worked well for all the straight bat shots - straight drive, on drive etc. When attempting a pull shot or a cut shot, i find that they still have a loose hold of the bottom hand and it results in either loss of power in the shot or bat twists in their hand. When i play the shot i see that my bottom hand does come into play a bit and they are asking me the following questions ...

1. How does the grip and diamond shape work for a cross batted shot (pull or cut) ?
2. Do you change bottom hand grip when playing a cross batted shot ? If so how ?

I explained a bit but one of them told me bluntly you are a bad instructor ...  :D

Any advice @Buzz ? Any possibility of a video on this topic ?

Good questions.
A video from me may be a while in coming due to work and family commitments, but there is no question you need the power from the bottom hand to hit cross bat shots.
Will give it some thought and see what I can do.

If its of any help
I tend to be all bottom hand attacking  being left handed always looking to  pull and  hook with a normal mid handle grip no need to change. the diamond shape works  for me as  arms are away from my body which helps bat swing shot momentum if that makes sense.
