Title: Soft Pockets
Post by: WalkingWicket37 on March 14, 2013, 07:45:57 PM
I know that there is more than one topic about Soft Pockets already on the forum, so feel free to move this if you feel it necessary. However I feel that a topic praising Tom is more than justified.

A few weeks ago I sent Tom a message asking for prices, but explained that I couldn't pay him until the end of February. He said this wasn't a problem, and I let him know what I wanted and he said he'd sort it for me.

To cut a long story short, I was informed of a slight delay due to unforeseen circumstances, and informed of everything as it happened. Not only was Tom's communication first class, but when the products arrived they were better than I could have hoped for.

There are a couple of pictures of what I ordered, absolutely love them. Thank you very much.

Some people feel excellent customer service shouldn't be praised, it should be standard, but Tom has delivered where many fall short. If anyone is after anything to protect their bat, pads, gloves or helmet, then I would suggest you get in touch with Tom. If you get a service half as good as I did, you would be far from disappointed.

Thank you for the kind words Cameron, I think customer service is something I wanted to make sure was right, and comments like this make things worthwhile.

Not a problem CD, you messaged me saying that you liked them and that's good enough for me mate :). As I said, as long as people are happy with what I'm doing then it's worthwhile doing it!

From one entrepreneur to another, you need to have a go at this, Tom, and get the business launched! You may well be onto something here, and if you keep this level of service up, the orders will keep flying in!

Agreed. And I think there is a definite gap in the market here. Obviously some people like to buy the matching bat and cover, but for those that don't make bat covers or don't get one supplied with the bat there isn't really a generic option available. Most cricket shops have a small selection of GN, GM and a couple of other brand covers, but no plain or unbranded versions.

I think if you were to set up a section on here or website you would be able to get some serious business. Then I'm sure it wouldn't be long until you got into shops. Surely places like ItsJustCricket would be keen for something like this Paul? A different option for customers?

Agreed, Jamie, on several occasions we've missed out on a bat cover sale (after selling a bat) because we didn't have a matching cover in stock, and the customer quite often doesn't want a Gray-Nicolls bat cover if he buys a GM bat, but as you say, a generic option gets around this problem to an extent, and offers a nice alternative that some may prefer to a more traditional bat cover.  The helmet bags are also an interesting one as not all helmets have these - I've not seen any Albion ones for example?

My albion came with a bag that was absolutely terrible, which is why I replaced it with a lovely helmet bag from Tom :)

Which Albion model was that? Maybe they do them for the top end.  We only stock low-mid end Albion and no helmet bags in sight...

Can't you get CBF to set you a shop up like the batmakers shed mate?
Title: Re: Soft Pockets

I had wondered about that, would you have to pay for that?

All you need is somewhere with a set list of prices that people can view, would remind people exactly what they can get and easily compare to prices of brands.

Can certainly see the market for these.

But don't all bats sold in stores come with covers? Or do they have to be bought separately?

I think it depends on the brand and the store. Didn't get anything with the SS I bought last summer. I think you'll probably get a cover if you buy direct rather than from a shop.

Only certain models (usually the higher end ones) come with a bat cover, but it varies from brand to brand. And even then the retailer may choose to sell the 'free' bat cover separately rather than throw it in.

As much as I love my custom B3 crown willow blade and the service B3 provide, I was niggled that my bat didn't come with a B3 bat cover, considering the cost. I'd be interested in one of these, providing it was properly padded and had a carrying strap. I could be wrong, but the B3 covers don't appear to be that well padded. What are the costs for the entire range, Tom? I'm also thinking of getting an Albion lid.

custom B3 crown willow blade

R u for real   :o

Those crowns are the top deal, arent they!

In reality Bat covers are pretty cheap to manufacture, so cheap that they should be free with any half decent bats.

:D Hah! Well, you would think so, wouldn't you?
A bat cover is a cheap and effective way of getting your brand out there, isn't it.
But I have my lovely B3 hiding in a lovely Newbury bat cover at the moment!

How many other companies send a free bat cover when you order a bat just out of curiosity?

To my knowledge it isnt very many

Gray Nicolls if you spend enough
Lekka
SS/TON

Woodworm used to if you broke a bat haha
And my local(ish) shop used to give you a branded one with any bat, but that was likely just for advertising

Shops with cricket people working in them I've found will generally include one perhaps not the brand of bat but will sort you one
Kook do on all or did and gn
It should be with all bats IMO
Good will at least after spending money on there product

Affinity do bat covers free on the ones I've bought from both Paul and Marcus direct. Both the neoprene sleeves and full length covers are excellent quality. I can't imagine the neoprene covers are cheap to have made

Mine hides in  a lovely GN full size bat cover. People often wonder why my GN bat has this "B3" sticker on it.

The thing with neoprene is that it sort of holds water which seems an odd material to choose as a cover! It may give padding but it might hold water on something you do not want to get wet! I like the full sf ones!
