I am delighted to report that two forum sponsors are coming together, and we will be stocking H4L from tomorrow onwards.
I will be visiting Matt tomorrow to hand-pick some finished bats and clefts, and to whet the appetite: here are a few bats that Matt has kindly put aside for us...
I will update this thread with photos and a report on my visit tomorrow evening. Needless to say, I can't wait! :)

well done Paul
-
Paul will be good to see how you feel H4L compare to other brands you stock.
-
This is not good Paul, not good at all!!! my poor wallett :( :-[
-
Well done Paul and Matt! Looking forward to seeing what you'll be getting in stock Paul... ;)
-
Get some tempos please :D
-
Glad to hear! I remember chatting to you about this a while ago, and you telling me that it was in the talks. :) Great to see you stocking many smaller brands which offer great value for money. 8)
-
Will you be getting the Devil grade ones as well Paul?
-
Ooo yummy! Might have to pay another visit once these are in stock Paul!
-
Will you be getting the Devil grade ones as well Paul?
Yes, Sedwyn! At least assuming that I like the ones that I see there (I am quite picky!)

Looking forward to seeing the outcome of your visit Paul. Enjoy.
-
Great news Paul. H4L have a great reputation and should be great for you bith
-
That's really good news. I have a brand new H4L bought from Matt..still waiting to be used but everytime i pick that bat, the balance is amazing and sounds great of the mallet.
Good for H4L and IJC

Oh Oh.. deep pockets Sedwyn is at it again! ;)

Hahahaha! I'm on a strict one bat out, one bat in policy!
Love this Forum, but hate it at the same time! So many tempting goodies, but I'm not even good enough to justify the purchases!
-
Anything in the 2lb 8 region and you may be receiving an order :o
-
Great news Paul, I might be in touch about a 3lb long blade Tempo later this year. I was thinking I'd get one and send to you for knocking in but this would be ideal. Will the prices be the same as the H4L site?

No, we will discount from the H4L prices. Exactly how much is still to be determined though! Give me a shout when you want the bat, Graham, irrespective of whether we have such a bat in stock or not.
-
Video reviews Please! you guys really have a great selection of top bats from not mainstream manufacturers (something we lack in Australia!)
-
Are these little manufacturers in the same bracket as main stream or possibly better. Prices seem cheaper than the bigger brands but I'd gather that is down to manufacturing over heads

I think H4L bats are better than the bats that the bigger brands produce for the amatuer market.
I also think H4L are the one of the better boutique brands as they actually do their own bats from their own willow. I think that if the boutique brands who use a certain batmaker had to rename themselves as TK Cricket that would more than half the amount of brands on the market ;)
-
I look forward to what you pick up Paul.
-
Same or better quality kit for less money and better service ;)
-
Good to hear lads thanks

Lol what do you mean mate? Are youy telling us that a lot of brands use TK bats? Surely not :o

Paul,
Will you be picking up any Tempos?

Nothing wrong with Matt's service mate
-
I have heard that he isnt great at replying to emails etc ............ the only downside to H4L I have heard, but just a small one as a lot of the time it is impatience from the buyer to get their hands on the merchandise!
A+ for Matt's service from me, even sent me a scuff sheet in the post after I was dopey enough to leave the one he orginally gave me behind!
-
never had a problem with Matt being slow to reply. He's always replied promptly IMO. Very patient and a lovely chap t deal with

Top notch for me too - he has just done a re-handle for me and the bat cam back fully refurbed/re-stickered and looking as good as new, and only took a couple of weeks. He is a top man to deal with...

Not wanting to slag off a Forum sponsor but in support of Viper Cricket, I've had patchy responses to my emails from Matt in the past, which has led me to source bats from other forum bat manufacturers.
-
I think that a lot depends on the time of year and how busy the maker is!
Matt is a one-man show and can sometimes be snowed under being in such demand!
Generally I have found him responsive and realise that if it takes a few days to reply, there is a very good reason for that!
But the pay-off is that he makes some absolute gems! :D
-
Nothing wrong with Matts communication as I have dealt with him easily in the past
-
Amazing how this Post has now become a topic about H4L customer service :)
-
Matt is a great guy to deal with, always helpful and he does reply.....I think in this world of e-mail, twitter and facebook people expect (wrongly) an instant response!!
I've dealt with Matt a number of times to buy part mades and had a rehandle done and he has always answered in what I consider to be a timely fashion and orders usually arrive quickly, he was very patient dealing with my stupidity in incorrectly addressing a paypal payment :)
-

Although he never did reply to my email about a refurb for my Hattori, in general Matt is pretty good - no worse than most, certainly, and I have never had a bat that has gone like that Hattori (1500 runs and counting!)
-
Here is a good way to gauge how busy Matt is, if you see him on the forum thats the perfect time to email him, if you haven't seen him on here a while chances are he is super busy.
I am very happy IJC are going to stock H4L as that gives us the options of picking these quickly when Matt is busy, there is no doubt about quality of Matt's bats and service

Paul, how will the prices compare to going direct to h4l?

My bad.Have been sat in a&e for the past 2 hrs and im going mad!
-
Just got back from my visit - so may change the course of this thread a bit with photos etc.
We have decided on our prices, and have picked 10 lovely bats! I am genuinely blown away by the looks, pick-up and, most of all, performance of these bats. The pressing is actually my favourite of all the bats we stock - I just love a softly pressed bat and these are as soft as they come. Just stunning bats and I'm pleased with our selections...
-
Oh Buddha!
My sphincter begins to close as my wallet begins to open.
Paul is dangerously close to me as well.
Bugger!
-
Paul,
Will you be picking up any Tempos?
Yes, Bruce, picked a couple of Tempos including a Tempo Pro with 14 grains. They pick up really well for 2.13/2.14 bats...
-
Will definitely have to visit. And try my best to not buy one...
-
Glad to hear our impressed by the H4L bats Paul, a number of people on here including myself rate them very highly and I know you have tried numerous brands so have something to compare them too.
Did you get any softs Paul?

The one I had that I sold to Chad was beautifully finished. These will no doubt fly out the door for you. Great signing.

No, decided against the softs as they are about to re-design for 2014, but assuming that the bats sell well, we will certainly get a more complete H4L range for the 2014 season. Based on what Matt was telling me, I feel the 2014 softs will be superior to the current range as well...
-
Fair enough. Sure the bats will sell well for you. Look forward to seeing photos and info abut your day.
-

That will prove difficult, Jamie. I defy anyone to see one of these bats and not feel compelled to buy one! Trust me, I am actually being serious. They really are that good...

Photos just added to our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/itsjustcricket (http://www.facebook.com/itsjustcricket)

So, we came away with ten bats - the ones in the bubble wrap pockets here (the ones behind and beside me didn't make the cut incidentally!): (http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o538/ItsJustCricket/044_zps1785af9d.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/ItsJustCricket/media/044_zps1785af9d.jpg.html)
the bats are now on our website: http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/hell4leather-m50 (http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/hell4leather-m50)

But I wanted to make the most of the trip, so every one of Matt's part-mades were raided as well! Ended up adding six of these, which Matt will make up and finish for us within the next few weeks...

Many of you will be aware that Matt grows his own willow. In my experience, I don't know of any other bat makers except Gray-Nicolls who do this... It was nice to see proof of this outside the workshop!

Thanks for the pics Paul. Looks like a great day at H4L. Impressive setup and growing their own willow really sets them apart!
-
Looks great Paul. I think Kippax grow their own, so to speak.
-
Looks great Paul. I think Kippax grow their own, so to speak.
Yes, they do, Steve. I knew there was one other I forgot to mention there!
-
What's the level of bats then ie best to cheapest.
-
The Grade 2 is £179.99, Grade 1 £229.99 and Pro £279.99 (these are all our prices). Most of the bats we took were G1 and Pro, but I believe a couple of the part-mades we reserved for later are grade 2...
-
Paul,
You'll need to get some pics up of the bats for all us willow lovers.
-
Here's them on our shelf this morning. Two of them have been sold now, but we still have eight beauties left...

Are they Lekka grips Paul?
No, chevrons. Half and half colours - a bit like the Newberys. There was a bit of plastic packaging still around them when the photo was taken, but this has since been removed...
-
Ahh okay cheers. Look very similar to Lekka Combi grips
-
Here is the harrow HellFire Pro (one of my favourites). I will add photos of the other bats to the thread when I'm back in the shop tomorrow...

Harrow is absolute beauty !!! Wish it was a full size !!!

2-13
Almost 2lb 14oz actually! 2lb 13.9oz to be exact. It has 39mm edges and a 64mm spine. Never has there been a more appropriately named cricket bat! :)

I agree, the harrow is a stunner - decent weight too: 2lb 6.4oz...

Nice detailed review and the bats definitely look good!

These certainly do look really good and shows how handpicking bats is the way to go.

Hi Paul, why is there heart wood on the PRO grade bat? My understanding was H4L pro grade was the best looking willow asthetically and had no additional performance compared to say a G1 , even though I like heart wood I would not call it a good looking face if you know what i mean...so just curious as how it got the pro sticker??
-
Pros use heartwood

Hi Tushar, good question, and to be completely honest, I am speculating with my answer here, but I will say it anyway: I am seeing much fewer bats with 12+ straight and even grains that are purely sapwood. Every bat maker that I visit is telling me about the shortage of grade 1+ (pro grade) English willow too, and the price increases year on year reflect this. Maybe their grading systems are a bit more lenient as a result. Another explanation might be that heartwood is becoming more and more appreciated by cricketers as they understand the benefits that it can bring. I, for one, have changed my views a little on bats with heartwood since starting up IJC. I would be intrigued to hear Matt's views on this subject, as well as other bat makers because they can give a much more educated viewpoint...
-
I haven't checked the h4l grading structure - however if it states that it may include heartwood on their best grade willow then this may be the answer, however unless there is no statement on what may class as a certain grade then I would understand the customers point of view on this sort of query.
-

Thanks Paul, just to clarify I like HW on my bats but what I was questioning was the cosmetics of the face. Grains aren't even especially the one's in HW, since my understanding was that these would be the best of the best looking bats (HW or no HW) I was just a little suprised to see this one graded as Pro. I understand the scarsity of good looking or true G1 is an issue but for 290GBP(H4L) or 279GBP(IJC), assuming i got the prices right, you expect nothing less than a bat that plays well and look good.
-
For that sort of price I would except 12+ grains no heartwood or blemishes in sight and perform like theres no tomorrow.
-
I dont understand this heartwood arguement.
The Newbery Cenkos for £1000 has heartwood on it?!?!?!?!!?
check it out here http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=13817.150 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=13817.150)
-
Just checked out the site and am now a little confused, some bats you can select Pro, G1 or G2 and on others you can select LE, 5 star or 3 star. Suspect they both mean the same but maybe one is used for grading of their own willow.
Also I had thought that they used only their own willow but I see it states they get it from JS Wrights as well as their own.
-

Argument isn't HW, its that the face doesn't look like a evenly spaced grains and appealing (That is just my opinion) or what you would describe as good looking. Cenkos example is a good one but look the grains, their spacing and straightness of them. Considering I just saw multigrainer MSR with HW that looked better for 90GBP and graded as grade 3 makes you question doesn't it?
-
your referring to the Hattori bat in previous pics? I agree doesnt look like pro but maybe it is very very light?
H4L are superb bats so i would trust the Pro sticker very much over the looks
-

Yeah Pro stickered Hattori, I love H4L and RP bats so much to that I would buy them blind but reason I questioned this was back in the day when I was seriously considering between pro and G1 they clarified Pro is only pro in terms of looks but no better than say a G1 in terms of performance. Anyways moot point Matt is much better judge of willow than I ever will be, I have taken this off topic a bit so apologies for that.
-
Also I had thought that they used only their own willow but I see it states they get it from JS Wrights as well as their own.
I also heard they got their willow from somewhere else... but what does it really matter where it's from?
-
Tushar, in your original post, you didn't say anything about uneven grains, just heartwood. Not sure why you don't think this looks like a Pro grade bat though. We will have to agree to disagree as I think the grains are pretty even, and straight through the toe as well, something you rarely see on anything but top grade bats...
-

Apologies for not being clear in what I was trying to get across.
-
I personally love heartwood. I think it looks good and it does obviously have its advantages. If I could I would always chose to have a strip on the outside edge of my bat
-
Maybe this will get the point across.
Pin knot & Blemish on the face (Blemish is right under your finger, in other pic where your finger isn't covering the face it is a bit more clearer.)
9 grains in sapwood, 3/4 in HW - unevenly spaced grains
Grains in HW fade in and out, significantly darker in some spots than other.

etc..
so having looked at tempo in the other thread and thinking about buying it I went snooping around on H4L website, again. In terms of willow that you can select the options are G2, G1 & Pro so was hoping you shed some light on you pro willow pls. Is it pro in terms of look, performance & weight (lack of weight) or just performance?
could we see some pics too pls :D
Our pro willow is our best looking clefts (prev limited edition)
-
Not sure about heartwood myself, I actually find it a little more brittle than sapwood, always find that cracks tend to happen on the heartwood. Saying that, if you think about cutting a tree, you have quite a significant bit of heartwood in the round, therefore there are bound to be lots of lovely looking and performing clefts with heartwood. I don't really think of it too much, it doesn't seem to affect performance at all! :)
Lovely looking bats you have Paul, I do agree with Tushar that some of the grains on the heartwood seem a little uneven, but I have no doubt Matt had both performance and looks in mind when grading that a Pro grade. 8)
-
That's hits hard is the perfect face of a bat as far as I'm concerned. Can't believe that's grade 2
-
I'm not sure that particular HitsHard bat is a fair comparison. Since it's owned by someone that works at Salix, it may have been misgraded... ;)
Anyway let's bring this back on topic! I'm looking forward to my first H4L. Let's hope it gets here tomorrow! :)
-
Haha the downside of shooting videos in HD - the grains of our bats are clearly going to get scrutinized more than ever!
Comparing this bat to an MSR and Hits Hard is completely ridiculous though, so yes, I agree with Vincent - this needs to get back on topic!
-
Maybe this will get the point across.

Grains in HW fade in and out, significantly darker in some spots than other.

Well explained Tushar !! You have a valid point !!

I'm not sure that particular HitsHard bat is a fair comparison. Since it's owned by someone that works at Salix, it may have been misgraded... ;)
Anyway let's bring this back on topic! I'm looking forward to my first H4L. Let's hope it gets here tomorrow! :)
Not looking to take off topic but that bat was not mis graded it was in the G2 clefts and was the perfect weight for what I use and looked and pinged very well.
I personally have no problem with Heartwood on a pro, G1 whatever you want to call a top end bat. Having owned one and used a couple more I bet that H4L Pro pings like a pingy thing in pinging land.

I cant wait to visit IJC and see the Hell 4 Leather bats!!!

I also heard they got their willow from somewhere else... but what does it really matter where it's from?
It doesn't matter, just clearing up my own confusion, others may have had the same.

I've had a look at the other pics in your thread and you're right. In the closeup, you can see some grains that are spaced a little wider towards a right hander's inside edge. But that's a beauty for a G2!
Received my Hellfire today. It is very pingy off the mallet indeed! Will post a preliminary review shortly...
