I've spent enough on bats this month but this could be good for someone looking for something special - a custom Nicholls made by Alex at GN at a decent price

Niiiiiiiccceee!!!!!!!!

Wow awesome! If they sent a bat that looks like Cooks you would have to be happy!
-
If you need any more temptation just follow Alex on Twitter or GN and check out some of the bats he's made this year!!
It's always the way on here....."If I had seen this 3 weeks ago....."
-
Oh dear... Just when I had decided that I was definitely going for a Custom e41... :-[ It's well priced as well, especially since standard Custom LE bats cost just over £300!
-
just bought it.......... hope its an amazing batttt

I'm sure it will be amazing! I'm looking at my bank balance and contemplating whether or not I should get it... :-[ If I do get it, it means I'm spending around £900 on Gray Nicolls equipment in the next few months... I wonder if you can specify what number you want on it...
-
Chad I know Steve, I can ask him about the number. What do you want 111?

Really? Just dropped you a PM, it would be great if you could do that!

Have these ashes bats?
-
yup
-
The ashes tests bats are limited edition in terms of stickers rather then willow quality I'd say.
-
What do you do with a LTD edition bat of this quality?
Surely being only 1 of 200 you would want to keep it stored in a glass cupboard somewhere and admire it for years to come.. But as a cricketer and batsmen, any piece of attractive willow calls for a net session and eventually make it useful in a match..
That is the dilemma here!

The bats are said to be made from GN's professional players' grade willow, what is this grade in relation to their other grades offered? Can't see any mention on the GN website regards an over view of willow grading

its the grade they save for their players supposedly, so its obviously top of the line.
-
professionals use softer willow and softer balls to the league and balls you can buy so if you use the top grade willow in English leagues the balls are to hard for the soft willow and will probably start to crack the bat

That's what I was trying to get at, where the Professional Player's grade sits with say their LE and Legend grading.

Is this true? If so I don't understand why the amatuers shouldnt use the same type of ball as the professionals. Also if you have a soft pressed bat I have found it just takes longer to knock it in for it 2 become a gun.

yeah that's why when you buy for example a top of the line gm they don't last as long as the crap 303 because the willow if softer

Not many cricket clubs are going to use £70 International balls to play with in games, your match fees would certainly have to increase a fair bit. So its a case of economics rather than amateurs not being able to play with Test quality balls. However there are plenty of good quality balls available for a tenner that won't damage your bat.

Well I've spoken to the Lords shop about the willow grading on the Ashes bat, and Steve there said that the willow used is basically the equivalent of the LE grade. Not really up to speed on GN bats to know how that equates price wise to there standard models.
-
Well that's disappointing as it says they're made from wood reserved for the players......glad I didn't take the plunge!

Top of the line GM bats last extremely long as they're pressed so bloody hard!

Really? My captains is well into its 2nd season and just starting perform a lot better. Maybe this seasons GMs are softer pressed?

think they are , thye crack through the toe then up the sides very easy it seems or hes getting unlucky with his bats
-
I would put this down to luck more than a generalisation about the bats themselves.
Im sure the balls used by Pros and Joe public dont vary that much in hardness, willow is a natural product and as such susceptible to breaking at one time or another.
Pros use willow that is less dense than we get to lay our hands on meaning they get a larger bat in terms of volume of wood without it going up the scales in terms of finished weight.

Using the middle helps avoid this! ;)

if retailers were to sell bats made from pros willow how much is the difference in price to a standard piece of willow we can buy

well he plays everyday and just came back off tour with north of England so he does use the middle .... sometimes
-
Thats down to each individual brand and their pricing policy as one brands Top of the range bat price will differ to another's.
Some pros will want performance and looks from a bat, others couldnt care less what they look like as long as they perform well and the profile suits their game.

whos the biggest name you make bats for ? what do they prefer ?
-
We dont make bats but have supplied a few pros in our time, they were/are more than happy with just a stock bat that would have made its way onto the shelf to be sold to the public.
If your bat maker is worth its salt they will be doing a good enough job to offer the same level of attention to a bat regardless of whos hands its meant to end up in.
Typically they think they use a 2.8/9 that they then add 2 grips too and a scuff sheet that end up at 2.11-12 all in when walking out to the middle with!
-
Very nice. Shame it's too much for me.
Maybe if my wages doubled!

Just received the order form. A little disappointed to be honest, as it is just an LE willow bat made to one of their 5 stock shapes... Powerbow, e41, Oblivion, Maverick and A61. I'm going to be getting an Oblivion e41 (hopefully) in LE willow at the end of the year, so it's pointless to get another stock shape. I should have probably asked about it first, but it was advertised like it could be made to all of your own specs, and should probably state that it's your own specs in an off the shelf profile... Asked if it's possible to go for a custom profile as a few pictures of the GN Aus Legend made me fall in love with that shape again, but doubt that they're going to offer that service, in which case I'll ask for my money back and buy one less bat! :-[
Bat Size: Adult: SH LH
Junior: 5 6 Harrow
Bat Profile: Maverick Powerbow Oblivion E41 A61
Weight: 2lb 8oz 2lb 9oz 2lb 10oz 2lb 11oz 2lb 12oz
Number of Grips: One Two Three
Pre-Prepared: Oil Antiscuff Knock In Protectoe
(Please tick as many as required)

There's an advert in this months AOC magazine for this bat, has a discount code to get 20% off the price at checkout. Not tried it yet to see if it works. How would that make the price stack up vs a regular GN LE bat?
-
It does - £220

spoke to steve he confirmed they are not legends just limited edition bats with ashes stickers on. He got your special order number.

Yeah, wasn't expecting Legend bats at that price! Just a little gutted that it's one of those 5 stock shapes, none of which appeal to me... I will probably just cancel the order, thanks for asking for me John!
-
And the list doesn't include the Dynadrive nor the Powerspot. They would have been nice to have on the list. Makes me wonder if they're not just already-made LE bats that haven't been stickered up yet...

Wouldn't be surprised, but it does say that they are made by Alex himself, so perhaps it is made to order. I cancelled the order, think it would be silly to have a custom made bat to a profile I wasn't massively keen on! (Especially since there's a voucher I could have used to get 20% off!)
-
Figured I'd post this code on this topic.
LDAW-A6E2-7NYA
This gives you 20% off the GN LE Ashes special bat, which works out at £220 after discount.
-
That's pretty decent value!

Yeah bud, £220 for an LE bat is a pretty darn good price, and I hear Alex makes a cracking bat. The only downside is that the profiles are limited to the e41, Powerbow, Maverick, A61 and Oblivion, although that's still a fair amount of variety. :)
