Title: Visit to Woodstock - Photo Album
Post by: ItsJustCricket on November 06, 2013, 10:29:47 PM
Had a great day at Woodstock today, despite the rain.  Came away with some lovely new bats...

Here are all the photos: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.586078074761672.1073741830.267632753272874&type=3 (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.586078074761672.1073741830.267632753272874&type=3)

Hi Paul, so are these hand made by Woodstock or just finished?

Looks like you picked some nice bats either way?

I remember this being a contentious question in the past...

I think John does a lot more than people give him credit for, but I can't say any more than that on here.

stunning, mate.  I was blown away, genuinely! The lignum vitae mallet he had really emphasised this!  :) The pick-ups are incredibly light as well.  John really takes pride in his pick-ups and performance, I could tell.  He is very adept at finishing bats too! Really, really impressive bats.  My only concern is that we didn't stock them sooner!!

I know from a good source that all woodstock bats are made themselves and are not just finished by them as is the current rumour on here. They make excellent bats and need to get better coverage on here and I am delighted to see Paul stock them

johnnyw i am not concerned either way but the pics that paul had did'nt seem to show a press.

Yeh but not every bat maker has their own press either. Pressing is important but so is shaping. Just because you're not pressing your own clefts, it doesn't mean you're not a bat maker. :)

I agree smokem. Just challenging the statement that he does everything. I know that Julian M gets his bats pressed by sondhi

the pictures do show alot of pre shaped clefts with uncut/shaped handles in and the usual rubber grip around it. i dealt with woodstock early on for a few clefts. told me he had a press when he doesnt. he sent me a couple of preshaped clefts which i had to return as they couldnt be used for what i wanted. He does make/shape/finish a good bat (delete as appropriate) but i think it would be nice to know what he actually does rather than pretending to be something hes not. im not taking anything away from him or the woodstock bats.

i think as long as you are honest with what you do then thats fine. doesnt matter if you dont press or dont handle, aslong as you do the rest well then thats ok.

Yep. The source is a batmaker who was also an apprentice under Newbery

He was quite rude and dismissive with a few CBF members, myself included, at the Cricket Club Expo. I know everyone can have their off days but he was friendly and very chatty when he thought he was dealing with an everyday punter. As soon as anyone (I think as well as myself, nick Saunders, Scottish slogger and Matt from Vantage had a chat with him) steered the conversation toward bat making, his techniques, the provenance of his bats or anything along those lines his demeanour changed totally. To the extent that he flatly refused to talk to one of us, just stopped speaking and turned around mid conversation, and started talking to someone else.

Ultimately I don't really care if he doesn't make his own bats, or if he only finishes part mades from whatever source, or even just stickers up pre made bats. But to assume that every single one of his potential customers is going to take the stories he spins (see red inks comments about a press) at face value is a little optimistic. To go and get in a huff when someone asks a couple of probing questions suggests to me he doesn't do as much of the bat making process as he would have people believe.

As I said, I don't really care if a company makes their own bats, sources them, finishes them, whatever. But at least be honest about it, even if you can't name the source of your bats because of some clumsy Brighton based confidentiality agreement.

I don't have a lot of direct experience with the product, though it does seem on the pricey side. I must also say I don't hear too many glowing reviews, although on the whole, the lukewarm comments are not usually about the products themselves.

On the flip side Paul, looks like you have secured some nice looking bats, looks like you will need to buy in a couple more slat wall bat displays mate!

I absolutely love the look of the woodstck bats and softs range too! Finishing seems top on all the bats I have seen.

Hi Paul,

Will you be doing one of your video reviews of the Woodstock bats? they look excellent and am very interested in knowing more about them etc....

The Woodstock bats have now been uploaded to our website, so you can see prices, weights etc.: http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/woodstock-m54 (http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/woodstock-m54)

The only one I haven't uploaded yet is that crazy 53mm edge one, as I can't give away the weight before our Facebook "guess the weight" competition ends!  :)

Whats the price going to be on that Paul?

Regarding the pressing, just because a press doesn't happen to be in somebody's workshop doesn't mean that the bat maker who works there doesn't actually press the bats himself.  The pressing could be done somewhere else, but still by the bat maker, right?

The price I can tell you: £234.99 (the same as all the others).  Woodstock price there oversized clefts bats the same as their regular clefts, which I am quite impressed by...

Very true, a small local batmaker takes his clefts to Hunts to use their press.

When is the weight due to be revealed Paul? (Quite keen on this freak of a bat!).  :D

Any softs Paul?

Softs will follow as soon as we know there is a demand for them.  It's a similar approach to what we've done with H4L - start off just stocking the bats, and then add softs further down the line.  All being well, and if everything goes according to plan, we should have the Woodstock softs in pre-season...

Lovely looking bats, nice stickers and reasonable RRP.
The 53mm one looks lush, bet it goes like stink.
As for who presses what, who cares. Everything I've heard is rumour, hearsay or can not be corroborated but who really cares as long as the bat performs. If you do really really care, then I suggest you make your own bats start to finish, including cutting down the tree  :D That way you will definitely know it was fully handmade every step.

I have a tour de force gold and I can confirm that and the other few Woodstocks I've seen do perform (just a shame I can't get on with the shape of mine  :( )

You're holding it upside down  ;)
I take it the shape means the middle isn't quite where you require it? You can always sell it and get something more suitable.

Can anyone tell me why you would plane the edges of a bat after you have bound the handle? I would have thought the bat would be finished and sanded before the handle is bound then buffed to a finish?

Ah that's where I've been going wrong!  :-[
The middle is incredible, just a bit too low for me  :(
It's stickered up as a Neon so selling it may be a bit more tricky than it should be haha

I think I have enough willow to keep me going for a couple of weeks of net sessions, but I'll bear it in mind next time I need a new stick, cheers mate

For those of you who were wondering about the 53mm edge bat (it's actually more like 51.5mm having measured it again), but anyway, here's my video review and announcement of the Guess The Weight competition winner!
