Title: How annoyed do you get when you don't perform?
Post by: Gingerbusiness on August 27, 2014, 05:10:55 PM
Evening all,

I have had an awful run of form recently. Baring in mind that I am an all-rounder;

First half of the season I averaged under 9 with the ball, taking 38 wickets in 7 games and was averaging just under 30 with the bat.
Second half, one to forget, taken 6 wickets in 5 games at an average of 20 and averaging under 10 with the bat.

Most of it can be put down to playing with a back injury, which the doctor and physio both recommended to end my season at the beginning of July - can't follow through in my bowling and can't get down to yorkers when batting. Not great when you are only 30 (Carried on because we had a great shout of promotion and a young team so I add a bit of experience I guess).

However, I have found myself getting angry with it - not being able to perform as well as I know I can. So much so I decided just to chuck a load of kit on eBay and have done with it.

I am wondering if anyone else gets annoyed like this? How annoyed/angry do you get with yourself when you don't perform?

Averaging 20 with the ball is a good effort still mate (world class by Gerry SA's standard!)

And personally on a scale of 1 - Ben Stokes I'd put myself at about 8, I sometimes punch things but haven't broken my hand doing so (yet)!

Used to get in my car and drive off when I was younger ... I did return to field

Now I just feel like retiring

i always found a rubbish few games at some point in the season. i usually get really grumpy and stay in the changing room for a while then go for a wander around the ground to cool off. i do eventually talk to people then

I'm getting grumpy now!

Biggest problem at our club is lack of practice.  Despite promises upon promises of nets when the midweek league has finished not one has been organise yet.
wyet.when you questions this. They say no numbers for one. Yet when you get there sat there's atleast 8 that all say they wanted a net but was told no numbers.

Organised a net myself last wed and got 70 at weekend. My highest score of the season.

but again it's wed and club claims "no net not enough interest"

Frustrated more than angry but have had a flash of temper recentley following another 50/50 umpiring decision going against
I'm also frustrated at poor practice facilities at my club
I have been accused of being a seriously miserable individual by a team mate to which I am guilty as charged
If I score runs I'm happy if I don't I'm not
It's that simple... :)

The only way to net midweek if the club won't is for you to organise it. If people come, then great, but if not, then the club was right.

Fundamentally though, if you disagree with something not being done, do it anyway. You can only be proved wrong.

I used to get very frustrated and annoyed if I didn't perform when I was younger, throwing the bat, gloves , hitting the odd door way, but generally would calm down after a wander around the boundary. As I've got older (now 38) I don't get the same frustrations, looking back I think I was trying to beat myself and oppo!  :( Now I just take what comes my way, some days I get runs some I don't either through a good ball, bad umpiring or my own stupidity.  :)

It's down to cost and Ability.

We have a club, with an artificial, and a Roll on net, unfortunately our new expensive hand mower now sits in it's way. And as we apparently "can't be trusted" with this mower(ironically the groundsman broke the last one). We can only have nets organised by the club, so the mower is arranged to be moved and returned after.

The "club organised nets" don't happen.

This then means you need to go indoors, which costs money, need enough cars to get people there(not everyone drives or lives near an indoor net), and are generally not good for sat practice as the bounce is ridicolous.

Last few seasons nets were regular, even with 3 people and a side arm pro. This year, they have been non existent, and our form, has suffered because (worse season in 5 years, only 3 50s scored for the 1st xi, no trophy in the entirely club for first time in 5 years).
Ironically the chairmen just sent an email round asking us for thoughts on why our season has been bad, with the views off the committee on the end. They have blamed it on "heavy bats" and the want to hit sixes instead of building an innings.
Strange as stats have 6s and 4s percentage against overall runs, down on previous years.

Ah I binned the last GF for the terms 'Cricket-Widow' and 'Golf-Widow' being used. Glad I am not with her now, I was injured the two years I was with her (Only played a max of 10 matches and about a dozen rounds of golf). Already played 25 matches this season and play off 5.

Having turned 30 this year, my mother has gone into the 'wouldn't it be nice to have kids one day' mode.

Cricket has made me realise that I am far too angry for any of that right now! :-[ lol

Why can't the chuffing mower just live somewhere else? Ridiculous. Next there'll be a herb garden on the wicket because it gets the most sun.....

At the start of the season, I would just swear and lob my kit on the bag or the grass. Now, I guess I've just not netted enough to keep a high standard throughout the season, so actually just get a little annoyed at myself, but then get over it, as I know why the dip in form has happened. I don't think I've had any nightmare bowling performances this year, so not too frustrated on the bowling side of things!

I try and contribute in the field as much as I can saving runs, diving etc. as a means to vent out.

Get extremely frustrated if no one else performs and we lose.

I used to get angry, throw stuff etc. but these days I just sit somewhere in corner and sulk!!!

Rough area, vandalism etc. We have a tiny compound, the net was made to fit exactly(which means it's tight to net in!) and easily gotten in and out through the gate.
Off course the new gang mower is twice the size of old, so blocks it's removal now...it's a farce yes.

We had a net made that was awesome, but too large for the compound, 1 day later, there wasn't a straight bar on it, or a section of net that hadn't been ripped. Joys of housing estate cricket clubs!

hence the super heavy clubs [bats]...makes sense

that said I will be looking in to organising winter nets soon, will start a thread on it.

I used to get frustrated when I ways younger and the frustration used to last for about 3 days but not so much now that i am older which is a good job after the season I have had that said I was annoyed the other week when the opposition wicket keeper said the umpire had given me out caught behind and i took him at his word and walked off only to be asked in the bar later by the umpire why I walked off as he had not given me as he knew I had not hit it !

I don't think I've played well all season this year at any point but I just find I get disappointed in myself rather than all annoyed. I still score runs but just  not in the mannor I want or as many as I want :(

Still, playing is bette than not so all good.

Last season in Aus I only had one score over 10 which was in the first game and batted from opener down to 4th. First half of the season Id get pretty upset with myself, second half I was on a rampage every time, smashing all my kit and making a fool out of myself. The last couple I would end up just laughing as I couldnt believe my luck.

I don't get annoyed when I don't perform because I never perform in the first place. I play cricket because I love it, not just because I am good at it. Just saying, last season I did not get a bat above 8, highest score 1* (only got out once the whole season) and bowled 4 balls. So yeah, never been "in form"

I get annoyed because the last few seasons I have had to score the majority of the runs. Yesterday was the same, I'm more annoyed that I got to 60 and was well set but got bogged down looking for boundaries needing more than a run a ball to win and gave it away. We have struggled all year with me being the only one averaging over 20 in the league, I haven't had the best season averaging just short of 40 but the pressure on my shoulders as captain included has taken it's toll and started to cause injury

I had an okay season with the bat,

last season I averaged 12 this season 53 which is a bit of a jump that certainly surprised me!

But with the ball it has been dire, 5 early wickets have flattered my figures. Ended up taking only 9 or something stupid.

We had a friendly the other day and I bowled etc for ages to only face 3 balls and then go home.

I was fuming!

Looking back ... when I was younger I felt less pressure and when getting out I got upset but nothing major. I am now mid 30's and as a senior player I feel I have to lead the way in my team. I open the batting and have been leading run scorer for the last few years. However as a result, when I get out I get the "red mist"! I make a conscious effort not to explode infront of people, but once inside the changing room my gear takes a pounding and the air turns blue. I am a naturally laid back guy and handle pressure at work daily. I think it is related to realising that my competitive cricketing career is nearing an end, wanting to leave a legacy (stories in the bar) and maximising my time at weekends. I do not think its bad to show that you care but I am very conscious that I do not want to set a bad example to youngsters. I have found that a solitary walk round the boundary listening to aggressive music helps (until you bump in to the bowler who got you out at fine leg!).

This has been a biggest problem for me and also the most important factor affecting my batting. In preseason, I get plenty of practice because everybody's available for the indoor nets. Because of so many batting opportunities, I bat very well in the nets. Things unfortunately take a turn for the worse when the actual season starts. Either 5 to 10 minutes batting session once a week or none at all. My batting takes a nosedive.

Now the season is coming to an end and I have 2 to 5 games left. I am just not ready for it yet. I don't feel I have had any satisfying games this season. And, I kid you not, I'm already planning a preseason for the next season.

I'm getting grumpy now!

I get upset only if I made a massive effort at club training and also supplement that with personal training and get out cheaply.

Well considering this was my first season I wasn't expecting much. But it's been quite disappointing really, I am a bowler but get played as a number 5 batsman. But I've had 5 ducks, and my highest score is 4 which was from my only boundary, which is quite embarrassing. Before my team mates made excuses that I came when there was a collapse or near the end of the innings. But then I got my chance at number 3, and yeah, I got out for a golden duck. I felt like actually quitting.

The two times I've gotten to bowl I've got 3 wickets but only bowling 1.4 overs overall, and don't know if it's a real indication as I've been brought in to bowl when there's tailenders.

I put a lot of effort in the field, I don't know why, but it's just something that I do. My friends call me the 'specialist fielder' since I'm usually diving about saving boundaries or taking catches. Never thought I would be a 'fielder' in the team haha. Thing is though, I still get picked which is puzzling, but when I've played, we've only lost three games out of 16m while losing 5 when I've not played. Maybe I'm just a non-contributing good luck charm  :D

What sometimes frustrates me is a few times I've not batted or bowled in a game, that's what annoys me the most.

I don't get annoyed when I don't perform because I never perform in the first place. I play cricket because I love it, not just because I am good at it. Just saying, last season I did not get a bat above 8, highest score 1* (only got out once the whole season) and bowled 4 balls. So yeah, never been "in form"

This post kind of sums it for me, but I just rambled!
