Evening all just had an idea and thought I'd share it see if there was any interest just for a laugh.
So this forum is full of kit hoarders and bat badgers so here is the challenge. Budget is £100 not a penny more. The challenge is to get as close to a full set of kit that would see you through a match as possible for the money. Rules are simple
you must purchase the kit from stores, online ebay, forum etc not kit you already own.
The kit must be what you would already use so SH bat adult gloves etc. (no saving on jnr kit)
Kit can be new or used but must be in useable condition.
My thinking is that anyone interested in this for a laugh just registers there interest in this thread. We then have 4 weeks from a set date and go shopping and at another set date in the future we share our purchases. Maybe a forum admin could judge the winner.
Just an idea, so anybody think a good idea if so just say so. If not then no problems.
-
I think it is safe to say Chris has had a pay rise! :D
-
I'm hoping to see some top notch retro kit...
-
Wish this had started a week ago, I'd just picked up a 99p retro bat.
-
I think it is safe to say Chris has had a pay rise! :D
I wish mate banking has no pay rises or bonuses mate not at my level anyway.
-
Do I need a helmet and box in this?
-
I'm game for this!!
-
Isn't the Sportsdirect sale next week? Your in trouble! Lol
-
Do I need a helmet and box in this?
It's as much as you can get for £100 mate. Personally my first purchase will be a box lol.
-
I'm game for this!!
Ok mate that's 2 of us so far.
-
Ok mate that's 2 of us so far.
Even if it's just two people in up for doing it, might give it a try even if this is a no go to see what I end up with! :-[
-
sounds fun im in.
we could say start buying from the 1st october and have the whole month. might be a bit far away to start though

Fancy giving it a go mate just for a laugh?

Being a kit badger I'd happily buy a bat pads gloves. Even a thigh pad set.
Buy I have 3 boxes here. I'm not sure I want to buy another just for this??
Think i will do this. See what the best kit I can get for the cash and then chuck it in the club's kit bag.
-

yeah count me in
-
yeah count me in
Ok mate that's makes 3 and I think smilley792 makes 4
-
You only qualify if you use the £100 kit for a full season.
-
I would be in but getting anything shipped to me in the US would be a huge drawback for me :(
-
I might do this but I don't have the money to spend. I would go look in the catalogue and see what is there.
-
Think I might join in... Depends on when you start it...
But I think you should list what you expect the kit list to be so that there are no discrepancies, i.e., I am expecting the following:
Bat
Batting Gloves
Batting Pads
Helmet
Shoes
Thigh Pads
Box
Bag
And all items need to be bought in the period that the game runs (receipts required to demonstrate this and price).
If you think something different, let us all know.

i think covers everything i was expecting to buy

I disagree with shoes. But everything else yeah.

Agree here, if you're getting your full kit for <£100 you must have a pair of black trainers in the house already! ;)

Exactly what I was thinking, the challenge is to get as much of this for £100 as you can.
His about the challenge starts on sat 20th and runs until 20th Oct.
A member of admin who does not enter could be the judge and Winner wins a CBF goodie like hoodie, polo shirt etc?

Well done for starting this - I think it is a great plan. I am happy to speak to Arvind about the prize (pretty sure it won't be a problem) and as I won't be participating am happy to be a judge - I think two judges should be in place to ensure independence - perhaps there is a sponsor who might want to join me on the panel?
I think we would be looking for who has got the most items on the list balanced with the quality (and state) of the equipment purchased plus its usability and the best individual bargain from the items (may be a separate prize).
My suggestion is that shoes are off the list for a number of different reasons, not least cheap shoes are totally unusable...
On that basis the list would be Think I might join in... Depends on when you start it...

Oh and no photos mean they don't exist...
For those taking part in the "virtual" competition (i.e. sourcing bargains but not buying them) we will have a smaller prize for you, but you can't use an auction site (like ebay) unless the prices are fixed... (i.e. buy it now)
-
buy it nows?
-
What if you manage to pick up a bargain and turn a profit on it, can you use the profit to increase your budget?
-
buy it nows?
urgh. ok - that counts as a fixed price purchase

no - getting too complicated!

Brilliant Buzz thanks for putting yourself forward and agree and 2 be judge ideally sponsor would be great.
On the photo's do we update as we go along or do a grand unveiling at the end to keep suspense.
-
What deadline is being set for this - I'm tempted but would require a payday to come around! haha

entirely up to you - lets not have too many rules if we can!

20th Sept to 20th October has been mentioned as the timeframe, that seems reasonable to me.
-
I reckon progress shots will keep the thread moving nicely, and then the money shot!
-
Do we have a set iof rules, the Op says shops, ebay or form the forum is ok, buzz seems to suggest only anything fixed price works for him.
-
I think you should only submit photos of everything. That way you can't give other people ideas.
-

My idea is anything is fine as long as you can evidence so something that starts at 99P on eBay is fine just screen shot your winning offer bid with your purchase.
It's got to be an item new or old in a condition you could use and must be same size etc as your normally use so RH gloves, pads SH bat etc
-

Sorry if my comments isn't 100% clear.
if you are actually buying the items - then there are no restrictions - i.e. what Soulman says above
if you are playing the virtual game (i.e. pretending to spend £100 - rather than actually spending £100) then you are limited to fixed price items as you can't guess what price you might have got something in an eBay style auction. I hope that makes sense.
-
I'm game for this. Unsure whether I'm going to be able to do it properly or virtually. It all depends on what technological purchases I make in the meantime...
I think the ebay bargains thread might be quieter during this month!! :D

They may have been clear, was just skimming while pretending to work and got confused, thanks for clearing that up.

Would the winner be whoever had the most kit, or who had sourced the best quality kit?
-
Would the winner be whoever had the most kit, or who had sourced the best quality kit?
Both, number ticked off list plus quality judged by Sir Buzz and his partner in crime.
-
I like the date suggested. I have already got a couple of potential items lined up
-
The winner should be the one that can buy the most pints with the change after they've bought all their kit
-

Trip to spoons it is then!

Was also thinking postage costs would not be included in your £100 budget as postage costs are high now a days and could easily take 25% of total budget if you bought items separately and from different places.
-
As I have enough kit to start my own shop, I am willing to help Buzz judge?
-
Chris, I think that seems fair and it brings our overseas members into the game too...
postage is outside the £100
good work Pete.
still space if a sponsor wants to judge, I am happy to step down...

I'm not sure I agree with this. If you were buying the kit and you had a budget of £100, you would have to include your postage costs. You couldn't simply go out and buy £100 worth of kit, getting it posted, without them (unless postage was free). I therefore think it's a valid part of the cost of what you intend to buy.
-
The only way you can keep it fair for everyone worldwide will be to not include postage costs in the £100 - I'm happy with this if everyone else is
-
Postage shouldn't be included, to make it fair, however there should be extra consideration awarded for those that can source it all including postage
-
And here's the point.
If you only had the equivalent of £100 to spend and you were in Australia, you wouldn't source kit from the UK. You'd look locally at what was available and buy it there. You wouldn't even try and buy it from the UK.
I'm not saying that it stops people from participating, I'm simply pointing out that a £100 budget should relate to reality and not an airy fairy version of what the world might be if we didn't have to pay to transport things.

What about VAT?
If, say Vitas, has a decent sale bat at £50, overseas would only have to pay £40. That's harsh on UK members?
I think I am getting a bit pedantic here.

No, it's not. THe price you pay is what it costs to get to you. Someone outside the EU pays for the product, no VAT and shipping. That is the cost to them.
-
Someone based in India should clean up on this ;)
-
What are people going to do with this stuff once they've bought it?
Cricket for Change are a good charity.
These two sentences are connected... ;)

Hi all,
Pete thanks for stepping in and agreeing to be a judge.
So here is a summary of what I would like to happen. From now until the 20th you have you opportunity to put yourself forward for the £100 kit challenge. The challenge will start at midnight on the 20 Sep and run till midnight 20 Oct
The challenge is to acquire as much kit as possible for £100. The rules are simple you must have purchased this. This means from a shop, online, forum, eBay etc. you have a GBP £100 limit and postage is not included in the £100. The items you purchase must be in your size and dexterity you normally use. No skimping on jnr kit if your 6ft 6. If your not in UK that's fine just stick to GBP £100 budget.
You are free to upload images of your purchases as you go or hold fire until 20 Oct and share then. The winner will be judged by Buzz & Pete there decision is final. The winner will be the person that has the most kit for £100 and can prove there purchases.
There at this stage is no prize just playing for fun unless someone offers maybe some CBF goodies or a sponsor offers something to the cause.
Hope I haven't missed anything and good luck to all.
The winner will be the
-
Big thank you to Wilkie who has offered 2 x soft pockets for the winner.
-
Due to a recent (and totally unnecessary) purchase of full kit I don't think I'll be taking part now :(
-
Is it purely on amount of kit, or does quality apply as well?
So is a decent bat rated better than a cheap Kashmir one?
-

That will be down to the judges but as were a bat form full of bat & kit geeks I would hope so mate yes

Thought so, so a decent full set of kit would be rated better than some manky 300 year old kit
Gotcha
-
Like a good lunch - quality and quantity please...!!
-
After the convo with pro direct regarding the order I placed for this challenge. I'm out. And won't be using prodirect again either!

Please do tell??
Advertising items they don't stock??
Not being able to post for 4 months due to a "supply issue"??
General cluelessness??
Or something I've not already had from them??

I bought gear last season on my bank card,
I tried to buy an octane on my credit card(out of stock)
I tried to buy pads and gloves on my a bank card.
Apparently this is the actions of a credit card thief, and my account is on online stop, and I can only buy via telephone from now on to ensure they are my cards.
I told them if they believe people in 2015 only have one payment means, then there retarded, and to go #### themselves.

Only owning one bank card, that's a new one to me, and I work in financial services so like to think I know about that kind of thing!
Don't most people own a bank card & a credit card as a minimum?? PDC seem to be going out of their way to avoid business rather than attract it...
-
It's a backwards form off thinking. but that's how there system is set and they won't change it for anyone!
The war on fraud is bound to have a few law abiding casualties unfortunately.
-
We have to do a money laundering and suspicious activity test on a regular basis, funnily enough owning 2 payment cards was not a trigger for alarm bells, it's normal.
Yes, fraud prevention is all well and good, but blocking your account because you have two cards - that's taking the piss a bit!
-
nuts - unless you are buying over £10K worth of kit at a time... now if you were, my suspicion is that you wouldn't be shopping at Pro-Direct Cricket!
they must have had some organised abuse against them
-
Ok guys so interested to make sure this happens for those that are interested the £100 challenge can now begin.
Rules as such can be found in the thread but basically you have a budget of £100 GBP to gather a full kit in your normal sizing. Min qualifing kit will be
Bat
Pads
Gloves
Protection ( box, thigh guard )
Any postage costs do not come from your £100 budget.
The winning kit collector will be judged by Pete Hosk and Buzz.
Just for fun unless a sponsor wants to donate a prize or admins can provide some CBF goodies.
Good luck to all those that take up the challenge.
-
Can I enter the kit I received on Friday?
I know it was bought before the official start, but it was the kit that meant I didn't have money for the £100 challenge :-[
-
Well I wasn't intending on entering this and chances are I can't as I've bought some pretty handy purchases that total unfortunately £104!
-
ive just started searching the internet

Up to the judges mate but we did say 20th of Sep to 20th Oct so should be ok.
-
Given that you need to provide a receipt or proof of purchase, e.g. Screenshot of PayPal payment, and the date on that is pre-20th, I would expect not.
-
Okay - think I'm done on this one, and looks like I'm all in at less than £50....
-
Okay - think I'm done on this one, and looks like I'm all in at less than £50....
Crickey that's good going Tim all in for £50? Looking forward to seeing what you have.
Iv managed pads, gloves and protection but have limited bat budget so will need to search eBay and grab a bargain.
-
ive got a bat from ebay on the way.
ive got an idea for pads and gloves mainly as they match and i really like the colour scheme but going to see what else comes up
just got my thigh pad and its one i was after anyway
-
Iv sourced softs that arrived today also protection from eBay in thigh, arm and chest guard. Just need a bat now.
-
Is there a special prize to see if you can get it from a retail catalogue?
-
You get a ticker tape parade if you can get it from Cricket Direct...
-
I think the winners should be filmed walking out to the middle so we can see how Village/Pro they look in their new gear. ;)
-
I believe there is a "Son of £100 Challenge" in the offing, where everyone has to wear what they bought to a net session and use it.
-

and Grandson where they use it in a match?
-
i will definitely be using my bat and thigh pad in the nets. i need to compare my softs against the ones that stay at the clubhouse for when i net and see which set i prefer. so i should end up using all of it
-
Got a bat and pads on the way via eBay.
Will try SportsDirect tomorrow to see what stock they have left.
-
For me, the interesting question is what are people doing about a helmet? That's the one bit of kit you need to seriously consider whether used is the right approach.
-
Sd have helmets at 12 quid!
-
Do we need a lid? Thought it was just box and thigh pad.
-
If you go back to the start of the topic, the list of required items is:
Bat
Pads
Gloves
Helmet
Box
Thigh pad
Bag
Shoes were taken off.
-

Only if you're a junior though...
-
As per Alvaro's earlier post, what are people planning to do with their kit?
I intend to donate mine to Cricket 4 change, and with this in mind had an idea.
For those in London and the South East, how about we arrange a net on 31st October at the Croydon centre where these guys are based. Everyone turns up with their budget buys, nets in the stuff (we'd video this) and then we hand it all over to the charity when we depart?
Thoughts?
-
I think that's a great idea on both counts.
-
Only if you're a junior though...
Only a pound extra for seniors.

sounds like a good idea not that i will be there as i live to far away

The reality is, of course, that if you were spending £100 on all kit, you'd need to include the Clothing, and Sports Direct gives you all you'd need for £40. You may be able to get bits cheaper:
This would leave you £60 for your playing gear!

If you're spending £100 on clothing and kit you wouldn't bother with cricket shoes, you'd have a perfectly good pair of black trainers already!!
Doubt you'd think to buy a jock strap or a jumper either (going on what our "I've never played before so got full kit in sports direct" player turned up with!)

haha mate I think cheap SD tat is ruining it. At least limit SD purchases to one or two items only.
-

I'm not going to mention that I thought postage should be included in the first place, as anyone buying kit for £100 is highly unlikely to be buying from outside their local area/country. But that's just my point of view. And buying from India, not including the postage costs, kind of defeats the challenge.

As I have had to sell some kit to fund this challenge, I am hoping to get a seasons use out of everything I buy, therefore not going for tat or kit I would never use.

I don't mind whether postage is or isn't included. As long as it is consistent across the board.
Just waiting on a couple of eBay items to come to an end to see whether I have any more kit to add.
-
Hey all just a quick message to say still 3 weeks to go on the £100 challenge for any that do want to enter.
My kit is looking good after spending a little more on softs than ideally I should (they are top quality though) I've managed to source a cracker of a bat and bag for a bargain so back in the running me thinks :-[
-
Had a couple of unexpected bills come in :( so having to withdraw my attempt. Bloody dishwasher and car packs up at the same time.
-
good work - looking forward to seeing the out puts to this!!!
-
struggling to find all the bits i want that arent just rubbish. so far a bat and thigh pads. need more time on ebay. also helps that i have been paid today
-
There are actually a lot of complete kits available on eBay. There's one which has everything that a guy will accept £40 for, and he's just down the road in Camberwell. None of it is top grade, but it is a full kit, including helmet, box, whites, shoes and all seems nearly new. There are loads of bargains to be had if you look.
-
Just a reminder, today is your last day for purchasing kit in the £100 challenge. If you've got it already, get your pictures in the stash topic! 16 hours remain...
-
just to confirm what Tim says, of you buy it today (and your receipt says today that counts!)
judging will take place at the end of the week!
get those pics up please! !
