The support needed and not be hounded by the media, I see there's already photo's of him leaving the hospital online!
It's going to be very tough for all the guys who knew and played with him to get back out there and play again.
-
Thoughts and condolences to his friends and family. A sad day for cricket. RIP Phil Hughes.
-

-
Such a sad news. May he rest in peace!
-
Terrible news.
-
Absolutely horrible. I don't really get affected by this sort of stuff often but this one hit me hard. He's about my age and someone I genuinely always looked out for as enjoyed watching.
Taken far too soon. Forever 63*.
-
What gut-wrenching sad news. Mere words can't convey the sadness I feel despite not even knowing him. From a rather lowly Sunday Friendly village cricketer in the heart of Wiltshire, I can only offer this:
"Rest In Peace Phillip Hughes. The world of cricket, from us lowly village sloggers upwards, truly mourns your loss".
To Sean Abbott. My very best wishes and my thoughts go with you.

I am shocked and heartbroken to wake up to such terrible news. After all the hoping and praying I can't believe the worst has actually happened. My heart goes out to his teammates and family.
I didn't know Phillip Hughes, I only watched him on tv like most other fans, but I always liked and rooted for him. I'm not sure why. There was just something about his character, his unorthodox technique that made him seem so appealing. I couldn't wait for him to finally make a spot in the Aussie test team his own and watch his career blossom.
Alas it is not to be. This extraordinarily talented young man has been struck down in his prime while doing the exact thing he would have wanted to be doing at that time. He is gone and now the world of cricket with all it's dramas and nonsense arguments just seems so insignificant.
RIP Phillip Hughes there will never be another like you. You will be missed.
-
He is gone and now the world of cricket with all it's dramas and nonsense arguments just seems so insignificant.
Lets hope that this brings all those crass and often threats of physical harm made to batsmen by bowlers, and dare I say such comments made by certain International Captains, all into sharp perspective.
-
Logged on this morning to check how he was recovering, if there was any good news. Did not expect to see this, Rest in peace Phil, devastating loss for his family and friends and cricket.
-
Really sad to see such a great talent be lost so early. I had just turned 18 when he made his test debut and he was the first proper cricketer that i aspired to be like. I was always made fun of for having an unorthodox technique like Phil, but watching Phil play gave me the belief that i could succeed whilst not looking like the average batsman. I remember taking days off college just to watch him bat. Firmly believed he would've been a legend of international cricket.
I myself suffered a cracked skull a few years back after being hit with a cricket ball and this again, really puts into perspective how dangerous our game can be.
Also thoughts are with Sean Abbott too. Hope he gets all the helped needed.
Needless to say i'm gutted by this.
RIP - Phil Hughes, Legend
-
Extremely devastating news. The cricket family has lost one of their own.
Rest in Peace Phil Hughes

Literally a million to one injury that killed poor Phil.
-
Such a terrible freak accident. Such a tragic loss of life. Very sad.
-
Gideon Haigh sums it up more eloquently than most:

As a sign of respect, I have decided not to touch any cricket equipment till next week.
Cancelled from our Sunday game as well.
RIP fellow cricketer.
Everyone else, please ensure you use protective equipment including helmets, no matter what standard you play at. It is just not worth the risk.
-
RIP - Phil Hughes
-
Terrible news. Our thoughts go out to family and friends. I must say I have been very impressed with Michael Clarke.
-
RIP Hughesy, thoughts are with his family. Feel for Abbott as well, having to suffer what happen to Hughes but wasn't his fault at all...
-
So very sad tragic, brings it home as an infrequent user of my helmet that will change.
-
I just can't stop thinking about how tragic this is...
If he had just ducked, or if he had been a fraction slower the ball may have hit shoulder and there is no problem. In some alternate universe Phil hit that ball for four, grinned in satisfaction and carried on batting...but no the 1 in a million happened. That one in a million could happen to anyone of us. Not just batting but fielding too.
It is an old cliche about cricket being a dangerous game but how often do we allow our selves to realize just how dangerous it is. I know I always tell my teamates to watch the ball constantly especially at net practice. Its not about being afraid of the ball it's about having a healthy respect for what that ball can do to your body when it hits you. Anything can happen when playing this game and this incident has brought that home in the most gut wrenchingly brutal way possible.
Poor Abbot, he should feel no guilt but how could he not? I can't even concentrate at work today. This whole thing.....this is just so sad.
-
indeed Topshot, it's a devastating loss probably because he was so young
i'm sure there is a few of us who have been hit in the head playing club cricket, I've had 2 thankfully no more than a fractured cheekbone and a split open eyebrow.
I know the helmet didn't(and could not of) saved Phil but everyone should be wearing them.Sometimes it's hot and you want to take it off and that's the time you could still get injured
Last time I got hit I promised my wife I would always wear a lid regardless of the weather, and I do now.
She asked me yesterday to go out a buy a new one but in this instance it's a complete freak accident.
I also feel for the bowler, the guilt must be terrible and could end his career. I hope he is able to resume cricket because there is no blame here for the bowler
very very sad situation indeed.
-
Maybe it's a new thread -and maybe be a discussion to be had when emotions are not so raw - but, in response to the poster above, I'd like to say that I'velong held the belief that you shouldn't be allowed to be allowed to bowl a bouncer in amateur cricket.
I have always felt that the laws in relation to dangerous bowling are very woolly.
If this isn't the time to be outspoken, I apologise.

Not sure if this has already been posted but this is a great tribute to the much loved Phillip Joel Hughes.
-
loving the putoutyourbats # thing going on on twitter.
-
Wow, thats a great video and very emotional. I remember the hundreds and the excitement he brought with them . RIP Phil. This unfortunate tragedy has and will always have a massive impact on the world of cricket.
-
As one of my sporting icons, the news had me close to tears. I remember his Test maiden 100 and his Odi maiden 100 both excellent displays of talent and graft. I'm devastated but nothing compared to those who knew and loved him. Our thoughts must also go to Sean Abbott, who must feel the weight of the world on him right now although he can take no blame. A freak accident that 99.9/100 would've ended in a new helmet or a bit of blood - ended in the death of a great young man.
RIP Hughesy.

I was hoping it was all a bad dream...but when I woke up this morning, my first thought was "Phil Hughes is gone".
It wasn't a bad dream...it is cold, hard reality.
I have damaged quadricep that was going to keep me out this week, but now I am playing because I wouldn't miss this round of matches for anything. I am going to prop up at 1st slip instead of my usual mid on/off and if I can't open, I will bat #11 if I have to.
Every game in every competition across Australia this weekend will be observing a minutes silence and be wearing black armbands. Also, I am going to texta 408 on one arm and 63no on the other.
The game will go on after all this....but it will never ever be quite the same.
63 Not Out Forever

Sydney grade cricket is off, there will be plenty more associations not playing as will with cricket NSW giving associations the choice of playing or not. I know throughout my club cricket is not high on the list of players at the moment.

Training last night was like a wake.
No banter, hardly any smiles.
Very, very reflective and quiet.
Everyone was feeling numb.
-
I imagine it will be like that playing Tomorrow Vic.
Grade cricket on in tamworth with a minutes silence and black armbands. We have games on Sunday as well so will be a sad weekend both days.
Still unbelieving of it all

This was touching...

Can I honestly say I am in total shock that a man could lose his life playing a game he and we all love. I honestly have never thought about the consequences of the game I love and how dangerous cricket can be.
I for one will never walk out to bat without a lid on regardless of bowler, pitch, temp etc.
RIP to a fellow cricket lover.

Philip Hughes got hit by a 90 mph bouncer. To compare your level of bravery to his is disrespectful. The game of cricket most of us play is not very dangerous at all.

Whoa! Steady on!
-
I'm sorry, but all this "I'll never bat without a helmet again" stuff is nonsense.
It was refreshing to hear that Joe Root was batting in his cap today - albeit only against the spinners.

And if it hasn't affected you in that way that's fine. But to some people, it's an eye opener to how dangerous cricket can be.
Not the time to start an argument, people grieve in different ways mate

Why don't you show some respect, your comments are way off the mark at a time like this.

Perhaps your visor's obscuring your vision?

Soulman has informed me that he regularly faces top quality.fast bowling. I apologise to him.
I maintain that the game of cricket most of us play is nothing like as dangerous as the one the professionals play.
-
Really guys arguing in a thread dedicated to a bloke being killed? How about showing some respect and start a new topic.
Sad times and some very emotional blokes at the pub all having a drink with mates for Phil Hughes.

Weren't some of these 'emotional blokes' threatening to break people's arms last year?

No mate last I checked none of the guys I play cricket with did such things
-
Bats, have you been drinking? This isn't the time or place for petty arguments.
