Angelo Mathews has won the toss on a rather green pitch an elected to field.
SL have made multiple changes. Rangana Herath, Nuwan Pradeep and Dinesh Chadimal all in. Shaminda Eranga, Niroshan Dickwella and Tharindu Kaushal all axed.
NZ bring in Doug Bracewell for Neil Wagner. Gotta admit I'm a big fan of Bracewell, when he's off the booze and concentrating on his cricket.

Dougie is was an absolute Beer Monster!!
Though I would imagine NZC will be hoping that he stays well away from Jesse Ryder...
This maybe big chat but I reckon he is potentially better than Southee and Boult - when he is fully on it that is!

Would be a shame if Bracewell wasted his career like Ryder has done.
And I agree I ratedd him higher than Southee and Boult. That spell in Hobart was fantastic.

Sounds like NZ have done/are doing what England have only managed once.. Find a good team AND team spirit

Would have liked to see Milne get a game. He bowled seriously quick in the last odi series!

Like most of the really rapid NZ bowlers, Milne has a fragile body. But I'd like too see Matt Henry get a Test cap.

Quite staggering Hamish Rutherford keeps getting picked despite not offering very much. 171 on debut. Since then in 26 innings he's only scored 507 runs at 20, with 1 fifty.

The team spirit is the main thing. I miss not being able to watch cricket at the basin. a great spectator venue with realistic ticket prices. Go the black caps.

Is that since Jesse Ryder stopped playing, he would've drunk all the team spirit! :D

There are quite a few dodgy openers around at the minute, playing because they are favourites or simply there is no one else.

That pratt Dhawan from India is the most ordinary IMO.

Rutherford sux. No temperament for Tests. Latham unsure of so far too.
Williamson pretty much opens the batting for us which is crap. Same story for the last two or three decades for us Kiwi's. Makes guys like Hayden and Langer look amazing for what they did.
Who's the best Test Openers going around now? Warner? Dare I say Cook? Very hard job it seems.
-
Very hard job it seems.
Isn't that the point of being an opener though?? When wickets are like they are in NZ (ie, seaming and swinging around and not nice flat decks) the first hour or so is the bowlers. YOu have to dig in and see it off with solid technique and mental strength. Just shows there aren't many of these types around in the game currently. We have a lot of one day style openers though, ten to a penny.
I'm liking this game so far, seems the batsmen have to bat properly or they'll be out, much more enjoyable than watching someone just thrash threw the line on a non seaming/swinging wicket. Now, just need someone bowling 95mph thunderbolts to make it really good.

Shaping up nicely for a McCullum counter attack smashathon.

Warner without question is the best opener around at present. I'd probably go with M Vijay as being up there as well.
And I think you're being harsh on young Latham. He looks a fine batsman and in UAE he scored a couple of 100s

I just said I was unsure about Latham. Thats not being harsh is it?

Getting dicey now, can't wait to see Southee, Boult and Bracewell bowl on this deck

New Zealand where all out for 221. Nuwan Pradeep took a career best 4/63. Kane Williamson top scored with 69.
Sri Lanka is reply are 5/78. Doug Bracewell has 3/23.
The Kiwis putting on a clinic as to how to bowl on a greenish pitch.
SL's bowlers bowled too short with the new ball, had they bowled better they might've contained NZ to around 150.
-
Neither team has bowled well enough to justify 15 wickets in the day. The pitch hasn't really contributed to any dismissal either. NZ played aggressively, similar to how the played in Christchurch in the first test, luck wasn't on their side today. Sri Lanka bowled ok, but a bit short. NZ's bowling was IMO a bit better than SL, but by no means a clinic. So far only one man can say that the bowler got me out, and that's Angelo Mathews who got a beaut of a nut from Tim Southee. Kaushal Silva looked tentative on defense, ad it showed in his dismissal as he took his bottom hand off the bat on what should have been a regulation forward defense. Evenly poised at this stage, but much will depend on Sanga as to whether SL are still in the hunt tomorrow morning.
Can't see this test lasting 5 days!

If they played aggressively and rely on luck then that's not a good thing.
-
Yeah, I agree. Interesting day 2, unfortunately didn't get to see any of it as I had a match of my own today. Looks like the deck is flattening out now. Wonder if spin will come into it later on days 4 and 5.
-
monster innings from Kumar.
-
Sanga! What a absolute legend. Another double added to the list. From such a precarious position too.
-
Total legend. I think he has reached 12000 runs in fewer tests than either pointing or tendulkar. I'm sure he is considered a god in SL so I would hate to think how he would be treated if he was Indian.
-
And.....it's about as far from the dead tracks of Colombo you can get
This guy does not get the credit he deserves
Yes a lot of runs in home conditions but he is a class act home and away
-
Sangakarra has got to be in top 10 batsman ever to have played the game, his sheer volume of runs in all formats of the game is incredible. I could happily watch him bat all day, will be a sad day when he retires.
-
Typical .I gave my 5 day passes I had for me and my son away at 3:30pm when Neesham got out thinking it would be all over today and headed for my family I haven't seen for a few days ,listened to the radio all the way home - the last ball driving up my street and we hadn't lost another wicket in three hours, would have stayed if I knew there was going to be some resistance and application shown
-
Sangakarra -11 double hundreds, one less than than the Don. Averaging close to 60 in Tests. Very underrated.
