I've heard Sanga, and Sehwag trip the top off their bat handles. Is this verified? A bit surprised because Sangakkara is actually quite tall.
If I wanted to convert SH to SSH, how much would I need to take off?
Thanks guys.

Chop the nub off the top Saad why would you do it though it a fad thing and these players have been doing it a long time the ones who actually do it.
Changes balance but only about half a ounce usually for the worst.
I have done it to a couple of bats regretted doing both to be honest i'm only 5ft 7in too.
Big favourite at minute is SSH and long blade
-
I would only consider it because I hold the bat fairly low down, and sometimes the top hits my forearm. The plan would be to replace the removed weight with lead tape at the very top, to make the adjustment "balance neutral".
SSH + LB ?? How does that help?

Does it effect the integrity of the handle and bat in general? Wanna try it on an old bat.
-
I'm gonna try it out too - apparently the standard difference between SH and SSH is just an inch. Will be easy to replace the removed weight with tape.

I like how he has his helmet on - safety first I guess.

Shiv Chanderpaul also requires a SSH and a LB if you check https://twitter.com/MadeByGrayNics/media (https://twitter.com/MadeByGrayNics/media) twitter page photos.

How does the SSH-LB combo feel ? Wasn't that Tendulkar's configuration?
-
I've done it to a few mates refurbs. I only take a cm off at max. Does not make too much difference except for a minor increase in pickup weight.
-
Justin Langer's old coach mentioned he used to saw off half of the knob off Justin's bats.

Only read half that statement thought it obvious why he ran so well between wickets. ;-)

It is all horses for causes really what you personally like I will suggest this though.
No matter what Tape you used to balance it will feel different when your in our stance and picking I up.
I'm not saying don't do it but I'm saying it will make your bat feel different so think about it if it your favourite bat.
-
I do this to my non custom made bats as I have short arms and feel tucked up with a normal S/H handle.
What I do is roll the grip halfway down the handle and apply 1inch wide masking tape around the binding just below where I am going to saw this is to stop the binding fraying. I then mark and cut 1 inch off the handle in a soft jaw vice to keep the woodsaw cut level.
With regard to the to using lead tape to adjust the pickup up and balance of bats you could use a lot and its not cheap i found that 1 or 2 cut grips around 2 inches long at the top of the handle work better.
Also found lead flashing cut to 1/2 inch wide strip wrapped around the top of the handle and held in place with cut grips works.
-
Two of my bats are SSH, I chopped the knob off. Really can't tell the difference in pick up its a small amount of cane really.
Im 6 ft 4 and had a long blade but wasn't happy with the length so chopped the bottom inch off to make it a standard length blade.
-
SSH & LB obviously helps if you want a shorter handle for reasons mentioned such as handle hitting forearm but don't want to reduce length of the bat as a whole. The LB makes up for the length lost from having a SSH.
-
After years of sh I've just picked up a ssh and had a bat made close to ssh dimensions. From what I read a ssh will be about an inch shorter than a sh but it's usually 3/4in from the handle and a quarter from the blade. It's made a huge difference to how the bat seems to fit in my stance. I've not yet batted with them but they definitely feel more suited to me. Harrow dimensions are about the same but the blade is also a few mm difference. I was tempted by some recent forum offerings in Harrow but in the end couldn't bring myself to do it.
-
I use super short handles, just a preference due to a bruised wrist from the top part of the handle - and I really do prefer them
-
When i have used Harrow bats mainly for the thinner handle but when batting I couldn't get use to looking at the 4 inch wide blade.
Much prefer a standard 4 1/4 wide blade with an inch shorter handle.

interesting concept - i do like holding the bat very low on the handle, but hate the fact that i have to crouch a lot to get the bat tap.
-
Alternatively you could always order a new bat from one of the sponsors 1/2 oz lighter with a SSH. Any excuse for a new bat right?
I am short and I hate the handle hitting my wrist so I just go Harrow size and put up with losing the 3mm in width for the better balance and increased weight around the sweet spot (I only ever use the middle anyway hmmm)... save a few sheets too.
But as pointed out earlier, each to their own!

better yet to ruin an existing bat by chopping off the handle, and then use that as an excuse to buy a new one.

This is unfortunately a common problem for short batsmen. I also had to deal with the toe hitting the ground when I drove. Then, I used custom size 6 bats and they worked out very nicely for me. You can put a lot of wood in the blade.

I use SSH bats as I'm only 5'3.
I think anything over 2.8ish they start to pick-up heavily, but stay around 2.8 and they seem perfectly well balanced.
However, I'm not sure about chopping the handle, it's best to get a bat that is made as SSH.

John @Red Ink Cricket has just made me a SSH at 2'8'5 in his Sirius shape and it picks up like an absolute dream. I could have gone at least an ounce heavier based on my perception of the pick up. it would have been a beast of a bat.
I'm not convinced hoping the handle will make a massive difference, especially if you already hold the bat low down. If the next person to chop the knob end off a handle could weigh it then it might be informative relative to its impact on balance.

I chopped off the top yesterday. The removed piece was 0.5 oz. Balance was more or less the same, but I will add a bit of lead tape at the top.
All this begs the question - why on earth does Sangakkara do it ? He's over 6 ft !

Im 6ft 4 and do it with standard blade. I don't place my hands there and gets in the way when i sweep/ reverse.
And the adjustment isn't that much. Hands stay in the same place regardless of handle length so chop it off.
Minimal batting tapping otherwise the back aches the next day.

i'm actually very surprised it weighed that much but i'm guessing 0.5oz on some bats could have an impact on pick up so thats good to know.
20 years later I can still hear the coach telling me i had too much bottom hand in the shot... as i get older and watch the various styles of batting its obvious to me that there is more bottom hand in play these days than ever before. If you hold the bat at the bottom i'm guessing it doesn't matter how tall you are you don't need the top bit of the handle.... I guess thats were the ssh and long blade combo come in.

I was surprised that I couldn't really tell the difference. Felt similar to switching from an extra thick grip to a slightly less thick grip. Overall the feel is better cuz I wasn't using the top anyway. Bat tap is still a pain in the back obviously (can't change that)
-
Following on from an earlier post I switched to super short handle due to bruised wrist and have since had between 1cm and 1.5cm taken off the toe to stop me grounding the bat on on drives and pushes through mid wicket.
Jake at Vitas had an amazing super short handle slightly shorter blade 2lb 7/8 oz copy of a black cat shadow made for me (Hunts county custom) - it is just perfect. B3 put extra binding on the handles to stop them feeling too thin. Plus Harrow bats are cheaper, sometimes by quite a lot.
Just look at the lack of handle protruding from the top of the gloves for Ian Bell, and also Brendan Macullan.
-
I did it to my ugly net bat, felt bottom heavy but the handle was the right thickness and feel but was too long also. Got part of an old grip as the new 'knob' of the handle as a counter balance, the bat is slightly shorter than my match bat but feels so much better!

Harrow sized bats are a bargain if you like light bats - none of the Harrow bats go over 2-5 or 2-6 weight which was very light for me. I had L&W and another bat maker make me meaty size-6 bats. I hold them from the top of the handle (and length of the bat is exactly where I hold a normal SH bat) and I am able to generate a lot of bat speed. These willow trampolines gave me enough confidence to use size SH willow trampolines.

You can also get off the shelf Harrow bats upto 2- 7.

A couple of seasons back I had a Harrow GM Octane that weighed 2lb10.5 (admitedly it did have three grips so the handle felt the right thickness!) so they're not all twiggy weights. Can take a bit of searching to get a heavier one though.
-
The @b&s chap had a thread on here where they had some harrows at 2'9. That's what almost tempted me.
-
We have a few Harrows (including B&S) at 2'8-2'9.
With the wealth of lovely harrows, super short handles being available as a custom option via me (made by Hunts) as well as Academy, Womens and Small Mens sizes from the big brands, i do wonder why anyone would want to cut the top of their existing SH off...?
-
It's simple Jake, instead of buying a bat that already the right size people bucher a perfectly good SH with a blunt saw because there's nothing more manly than going out to the shed and doing a bit of DIY!

Butchered? And yes there is no twine on the handle either its been replaced by zinc oxide tape

the sawed off handle felt surprisingly nice in the nets. bat speed increased, and didn't even need to replace the lost weight.
