An odd time to announce your retirement mid-series but today will be his last game it seems.
I'm sure quite a few batsmen will be relieved at hearing the news!
-
Champion fast bowler and came back from the brink a few years ago.
Id say the Mrs had something to do with this. Still looked the goods every game Ive watched.
-
What the hell!!!!
Starc has shown ( for sometime ) he is the heir apparent. I will miss Mitch.
-
I still think the Hughes tragedy has had a major affect on him, he has been nowhere near as aggressive in the last 12 months.
-
^ At the level he plays, you'd think that those best of the best (in the world) can handle his short ball.
-
I presume all the Aussies that butchered Swann for going mid series will have their knives out again!

This is totally different. Swann was getting pumped as was his team. "Apparently" Swann was injured so if so he shouldn't have gone. Ridiculous comment.

Why hold the spot when a new comer could be blooded sooner rather than later

Not so different, MJ's 5 wickets at 65+ so far suggest he is also getting 'pumped'.
Anyway my post was mainly tongue in cheek, but plenty of Aussies on here give Swann a tough time for quitting when things weren't going well for him.
-
Johnson on the wickets in the current series has prob thought this is not worth it and will play ipl.
Take it from some comments on here ppl think Swann did not have an elbow problem when he retired and that was just an excuse as we were getting whacked on the 5-0 tour?
-
seems to be the modern way to just think I've had enough I'm off
Swann was injured but said he would have played on if the series was in balance so take from that what you will
I'm not a fan of retiring mid series as seems a bit of I don't give a (No Swearing Please) or wanting attention but there maybe more to it that we know so hard to judge
I just prefer the classic of playing the full series you are picked for then announcing at the end
-
My personal favourite moment from Mitch

The world can't replace 94mph very easily, sad loss but he's looked off the pace recently don't blame him for quitting the disgusting tracks CA have produced.. Lots of effort for no reward

Can't help but agree.

Good Riddance

Wonder if he just got tired of using Spartan kit! Their international players are dropping like flies...
Nice to at least see him go out with a couple of wickets in the 2nd innings, hopefully one or two more to come - a highly irritating bowler from an England POV but a very talented (and quick) one nonetheless! He will be missed.

With time Joe Burns could become a top signing for them but at the moment as you said @ItsJustCricket in one of your videos it appears to be a brand in decline sadly.

The cynic in me thinks that Johnson knew that he was to be rested for the third test so decided to retire and get the proper send off.
And taking some attention away from Ross Taylor too.

Destructive bowler on his day could whack it with the bat as well! Wonder who will get the nod to replace him for the day/night test, if it was red ball probably would have been Siddle.

It's interesting how Johnson will be remembered. As the pacey bowler who burst onto the scene who later terrified batsman with 250 wickets, or as a hit and miss bowler, more known for his lack of direction and occasional hot series (don't all jump over me aussie fans, just putting forward two different perspectives). To me he never quite lived up to expectations. Had he found his inswinger and direction more often he could of probably been a great, as opposed to good. His record, I suspect, isn't too hot in Asia/England either.
I think after Englands last disaster in Aus, I commented that Johnson might not been around much in 2 years time to threaten England. Even so, this seems a bit sudden for somebody still hitting 90mph.
-

Would be pretty interesting to see his record outside of south Africa and Australia! Reckon his average would be 40+
-
I'll remember him as a foul mouthed aggressive fast bowler who gave it his all and when on song was as good as anything in the world
sadly he struggled with various things through his career as there is nothing better in cricket for me than watching a TRUE fast bowler running in and in battle with the batsmen
-
Everyone has already said it all!
Was very average at best when not on form.
But when he was on song, he was deadly!
Loads of pace and attitude!
Still would make most sides in the World as he has pace, and can biff it with the bat too! So excellent lower order bat and pure pace bowler to have!
Will be missed I reckon!
-
In the modern game where there is a distinct lack of them, he can defo be considered a "character".

That right there is why I cringe with some cricket now
I don't know if I was spoiled growing up as every series has great fast bowlers when I was growing up
Waqar Wasim later shoaib

Donald Pollock

Trying to think of English ones but no one quick enough other than Devon Malcom

Awesome! If out batsman turn up and sort out their mental barriers, I might fancy our chances at making a follow-on or two in 2017!
-
He was one of few bowlers who had the pace to make Test class batsmen struggle. Fantastic to see, when on form. He is also one of few bowlers to have been the major influence on an Ashes series.
In 2015, Australia have lost Harris and now Johnson. They need their current stock of youngsters to get and stay fit - Cummins, Pattinson et al. Will Siddle finally get the nod - I feel his experience would be invaluable to the bowling unit.

Think the Harmison/Flintoff/Jones group were the sharpest for England in their day.
I heard a rumour Jonathan Trott is thinking of making a comeback.

His record is quite remarkable for one considered by Poms to be so (No Swearing Please).
Has retired with a bowling average of 28, something English "Greatest of All Time" bowlers Harmison, Flintoff and ultimately, Anderson, haven't/won't manage to better.

With some consistency and pitches in Australia livelier (instead of being deadened for Indian Broadcasting dollars), would likely have finished with an average closer to 25.
Still, his strike rate is remarkable.

That article encapsulates Johnson.
A small town boy from Northern Queensland with zero self esteem due to his parents separation and his own non-descript personality.
When Johnson tried sledging (at the behest of retired legends)...it was hilarious, for he did not look, nor sound menacing. He is too much of a nice guy to be scary. I well remember in the 2009 Ashes Pieterson smiling when Mitch attempted a stare down. You could imagine KP saying, "what the hell is this Mitch?"
It was when Johnson got it all right, that he was at his scariest...and he didn't need to sledge or do anything. The ball was doing the talking.
It would be unfair to say that Johnson is an unfulfilled talent, because that would be selling him short of the incredible achievements that he did accomplish...only the second man to win ICC International Cricket of the Year TWICE. More Man of the Match awards than any other player over the course of the time frame of his career. The best strike-rate of any Australian bowler in the history of the game...these are stats that even I didn't know about.
Johnson will largely disappear from view now that he has retired. He will not end up in commentary or the media...he simply is a man of too few words, but like a North Queensland cyclone, he devastated all in his path on his day.
Unfulfilled talent? More like we only got to to see the tip of a rather large iceberg of talent that was only partially exposed.

I, for one, am sad to see him go. His sheer pace and left arm line made life very difficult for batsmen on the days that he operated to his full capacity. Much as we jeered him and made up songs about him, he fell right in the vein of McGrath and Warne, in that we knew he deserved it and we needed to do something to help our team overcome him. Depending on which series, you saw the varied results.
When he was on song, watching him bowl was exciting, as it should be for any fast bowler. Even when he was bowling at our side. As proper, rip roaring, lip curling, snarling fast bowlers retire (even if he was just a nice guy) the cricket world becomes a poorer place. Oh that we saw more where he came from!

Great read that, thanks for sharing Buzz.

I always enjoyed watching Mitch bowl, even at his devastating best in the 13/14 Ashes! Genuinely exciting to watch and, I imagine, frightening to face but the thing that set him apart for me was the determination he showed to bounce back from his mid-career struggles.
-
Nothing better in the game than a fast bowler bowling well and over 90mph.. Not like our powder puff stuff zz
