Title: Your bat collections!!
Post by: smilley792 on March 24, 2016, 05:00:41 PM
Rather than people posting in @petehosk 's legendary thread. Why not have a spot for other members to post there collection, and then add new pics when it changes and grows.

Here's how my collection currently looks.

Cleaning out the spare room so they are taking over the lounge currently.

What's everyone else's collections look like?

Only netted once with the BB so far and I think it'll be my match bat for the season, sorry GM!

Thought I'd throw up some photos of my collections as well as my favourite profiles.

The one with the older MRF stickers was made custom by RNS. It's my match bat and performs like a gun.

Hope you like the pics. Feel free to ask if you wanna see any spine or shoulder shots.

Safe to say I'm a little disgusted by this, but here's my collection in 4 categories!

To be culled by the end of the year:
(http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/af230/ch4d0m4n/IMG_8859.jpg) (http://s1010.photobucket.com/user/ch4d0m4n/media/IMG_8859.jpg.html)

Old school collection (Kit that was around when I started playing):
(http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/af230/ch4d0m4n/IMG_8860.jpg) (http://s1010.photobucket.com/user/ch4d0m4n/media/IMG_8860.jpg.html)

Bats I'm unsure as to whether to keep or not (Will probably sell about 6 of these on):
(http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/af230/ch4d0m4n/IMG_8858.jpg) (http://s1010.photobucket.com/user/ch4d0m4n/media/IMG_8858.jpg.html)

And bats I'm pretty happy with:

@Chad , any 2-12 (or 2-13) with a bow and a nice thin oval handle? High middle preferred but duck-bills are acceptable too. Let me know.

What's the weight of the M&H-09? I need one more bat to round out my net sessions.

Here you go @InternalTraining. Bat was originally a Salix and weighs around 2'10. Sweetest middle of all the bats I own.

I think it's just under 2lb 12oz, it was pretty much bang on 2.12 when it arrived. Lovely bat, and nice rounded face, you don't see them being done too often these days! Had to refinish it myself as it just didn't sit right with me that such a premium branded bat would have such poor finishing... :-[

Some lovely looking lower grade H4Ls @Chad!

The DVL is actually a TK pro, but agreed, I really like my G2 Hattori and Warbird. :)

@Chad lovely collection, took me a while to see the second row in last pic!

Yup, wet weather/T20 bat! Just liked the weight and pick up of this one for hitting hard, even though it's about 2-3 ounces heavier than I normally use! Cheapest bat there I believe, followed by the Turquoise SS, which is a beaut. 8)

The grains are quite something, eh? Probably the best seasoned bat out of the lot, and arguably the nicest! :)

Oops, my bad, just reread my replies and have edited. :) Yes, the Argons are lovely, was initially meant to be a match bat and back up bat, but with so many to choose from, don't think that will be the purpose of them! :-[

Oh go on then!! Here's my pathetic offering:

Left to right -

THE Warbird - apparently 2.12lbs! Lovely bat, and my match bat,
BDM G2 - 2.12lbs, amazing pick up, zero concaving
Chase Butterfly - 2.8lbs, slightly shorter blade / longer handle combo - ugly as fudge, but unbelievable ping from the butterfly area, my spare.
Willowstix Stick - 2.9lbs - haven;t used yet, but likey very much from waving about
B3 offer bat - 2.9lbs - really like the shape, converted for fun by Chase into a shoulderless, then I accidentally got the Stick  :(
GN Nemesis - 2.8lbs - One of the scuff sheet ones, pics up brilliant, and pings better than a certain member on here's proper one!!!!

Everytime I go to the county ground I swing their Chase bats. Got to say I love the Volante's.

I've got to say Jimbob, Chase had rather passed me by until I met Dan at Dummer and had a chat with him.

Really, really nice guy, really passionate about what he produces and quite the traditionalist in his shaping and range. I was lucky enough to do some work for him and managed to get this as well - I deliberately asked for a butterfly cleft that performed, and a bit like the B3 butterflies I've used, it absolutely flies (far too good for me  :D)

Rather like H4L, the finishing is top notch too. This is the Volante shape with a bit of a duckbill toe and virtually no concaving. I like!!

Obviously I agree that a collection should be enhanced and grown. Myself and a few other (Simon, Chad, yourself and a few others seem to have plenty!)
In fact it is quite funny when Simon and I net and both bring a bag or two of bats with us! There is more activity around the bats than in the nets a lot of the time, which shows that we're all bat freaks that find it hard to resist that willow!
And EVERYONE seems to want a Screaming Cat now!
Title: Re: Your bat collections!!

On the scat front. When I bought my laver and wood, I spent a fortnight contemplating which to buy, the laver or a scat.

Went for a laver and then Julian shut scat just 3 weeks later! Definately made the wrong choice!
Title: Re: Your bat collections!!
Post by: petehosk on March 28, 2016, 09:55:18 AM
Yes agreed! I have several Lavers and they are fantastic quality but often take a while to really get going - but once they do they are insane!
But Scats are very special indeed....right from the off! Plus as you say, Julian no longer makes bats which is tragic as he had an absolute gift!!

Surely a 25 bat cbf special won't be as hard on his health as 3 years of teaching people.

Don't think people dislike M&H.....they only dislike the underhanded way M&H work! Getting bats from elSSewhere and then charging huge prices for them as if they are UK made from start to finish? I suspect that is the case at least!

@smilley792 Chris I think the jester is 2.11ish before a 2nd grip, loads of glue, tape and a large dollop of shoe goo. The reason for all that lot is a friend had smashed the RH outside edge to bits and glued it minus the clamping so it's really uneven. After some advice from Ryan I added a few more layers of glue (although it's not even still) and taped it up. My mate in the mean time had bought another one so it's stayed in my bag. Only played one few over midweek game and used it - when you just play normally and connect it does fly! The rest of the time we use it as a warm up on a Saturday.

I'll bring it along to our next net (I need to have a good nosey at your Toro and thin edge / high spine b3).

@Andythomo21 didn't intentionally buy one Andy, I had a cheeky bid on a raffle for a pure blade as it's similar profile to the GM I have and ended up winning. Upon picking it up I noticed a split right down one of the grains (shame really as it was a real looker and at 2.11 perfect). Had a chat with Leafy and he suggested popping into the factory and so ended up with a 2.13 Colossus as that's all they had made up. I literally work 10 minutes from the factory so nice to have a nosey round as I've not had a kippax for 8 years or so. 3 bats for using on a Saturday is a bit much for my ability but looking forward to playing it in and giving it a whirl had contemplated a 3lb but thought that was a bit ambitious! Although picked up lighter than it's dead weight, they also had a Colossus + in which makes smileys warner GN look small.

Agree it's very interesting to have a look around their factory.  They do make some big bats and the Colossus + are verging on the ridiculous!  Last season I couldn't really settle with a bag which actually affected my batting a bit.  Anyway, this year I've decided my match bat is my Colossus, I've netted with it all winter and it flies so I definitely can't blame the bat if I don't perform this current season ,  :D

That RNS is a big bat for 2-10.5 ....edges are 42 mm with toe close to 30 mm and full profile
Pings really well for a brand new bat

Another pic for you guys to drool over ;)

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures at the moment but I've had some awesome bats in the past, baring in mind I'm only 19 I've had a fair selection of decent bats.

Junior bats:
Woodworm Flame- I was a huge fan of Andrew Flintoff so having this bat was a dream come true for me as a child
Woodworm Hardrive (with yellow grip)- I had this as a spare bat and the yellow grip looked amazing inspired by Kevin Pietersen's bat
Adidas Pellara- was a last minute purchase as an emergency as my main bat broke the day of a game
Salix Fera- this was a decent bat that served me well
Salix Pod1 (stickered as a Daemon as I liked the red stickers)- I loved this bat and had it repaired many times in the hope of keeping it going
Salix Pod- This was an amazing bat the middle was fantastic and even allowed a 13 year old me hit some fours
Willostix Stick- this was an amazing bat having 22 grains which was outstanding for a junior bat

Senior bats:
Willostix Anaconda- this bat was very consistent for me with a solid middle that I started my adult career with
Willostix Spitfire- I've had this bat for 3 seasons and has been fantastic for me. I hit my first ever six with this bat as well as my first ever 50
Willostix Spitfire (2015/16)- I bought this bat at the very end of last season and hasn't been used yet but I'm looking forward to using it

My small collection, all acquired in the past 6 months though.

B3 3 stripe TKC 2.12
Aldred Spectre Players 2.10
Bradbury Ex-pro bat 2.10
H4L Tempo MK2 2.9
B3 2 stripe (shape 11) 2.8

Haven't decided yet which will be my match bat - I will probably just chose one when I see the track and depending how I feel that day.

When I get a chance I will take some photos and post them. My three Willostix adult bats are all still in use and going strong even though one of them is nearly five years old and had a lot of batting time in it. My newest Spitfire has an awesome pick up and responds well off the mallet so I'm looking forward to using it. I was given an Anaconda by a mate when I was 15 and it was way too heavy for me to play games with but it was a nice slogging bat that I used in the nets a lot and it also helped me get my hands up to play the hook and pull which I had previously struggled with.

Honestly when it comes down to Willostix they have had an unnecessary bad reputation for a while but from someone that has used them for six years the kit it top notch and the prices are decent as well. If you give Andy a call he will sort you out with what you need. If you are able to get to Kent Cricket Direct near Tunbridge Wells then it may be worth a visit to see all the bats for yourself  :)

Well, it's hardly a 'collection' - more of a group, really. But I'm fussy and don't jump on every bat that's going cheap.
Ideally, I'd like one nice-looking bat from brands I like. As you see, I've a way to go. But therein lies the fun!

They're all around 2.9/2.10  and have counterbalanced handles, except the Mjolnir, which is a wand at just under 2.8 and doesn't need a counterbalance.
From left to right:

B3 Crown custom (match bat)
B3 wet weather/net bat (copy of match bat)
GM Aura Original (new and unused)
Woodstock Tour de Force XL Players LE
Newbery Mjolnir SPS ( my old match bat, recently refurbed in Cadbury livery)

@FattusCattus it's a premium grade, which I think is grade 2. Weight is around 2lb 10oz or 11oz, very good fun for whacking sixes.

They're just grips.... I just roll them up and put them on.

Since the grip is supposed to prevent the bat from slipping in one specific direction (down the hands) only and not the other way (i.e. "slipping" up the hands which generally doesn't happen anyway), there could be one "better" direction than the other..not necessarily for all grip types, but potentially for some.. For e.g., I always observed that for snake/fish scale grips, the 'C' always faces downwards out of the factory/store, meaning that is the supposed direction? But yea, not many would care  :)

Thanks mate. The Warsop weighs 2.10 and is a custom made shape based on a GN Predator with a long handle. The B3 was bought from @bk on here last year and is a terrific bat. It's a three stripe DB2 weighing 2.10 and has the best pick up out of all of the bats.

Not one of the biggest collections @Calzehbhoy but certainly a good 'un, two of the most sought after bats in there with the original purist and an XP80

Couldn't get two bats further apart in the design philosophy!

Must say the XP80 is unreal of the mallet. I've been knocking in the Warbird, 50/50 & XP80 this morning and the XP80 is miles ahead of the H4L's on the Ping'o'meter!

The XP80 and the Original Purist?
I'd say they're pretty similar in principal, with thin edges, a high spine (one a lot higher than the other) and a full shape so there's plenty of wood in the hitting area.

What I wouldn't give for a purist... I regret selling mine to this day :(

@jd163 small yet expensive collection. I really like you GN 50+ and B3 bats. Are they around the same specs or each is different?
Title: Re: Your bat collections!!

@KW9221 B3 and GN are different profiles. B3 is TKC pepsi shape with 70mm spine and 45mm edges with Mid profile. GN50+ is longblade 55mm edge and 73mm spine in Mid to high profile. I am getting my GN50+ copied by B3 now.

I thought your B3 was somewhere around 35mm edge size especially being next to GN 50+. Your GN 50+ is a monster mate.

@SOULMAN1012 Spartan is an unbranded Laminate. Yes it is pretty big with 45mm edge and 68mm spine with 2-13 weight. Currently posted for sale via my friend's ebay store.

My match bat for 40 over match is B3 TKC and for T20 i use USSZ (50mm edge  and 60mm spine 2-12).
Aldred and F18 are currently being used in nets and for backup.

My friend uses Kook onyx 1000 - made for australian market. It has the same edge decal. I think its safe to say non-UK Kook's had this branding ... I will try to get some pics of the Onyx bat.

Some nice bats there Dave (not that I'm surprised), in my opinion you struggle to beat that 1271 profile.
Title: Re: Your bat collections!!
Post by: procricket on January 22, 2017, 08:48:32 PM
@Ams4287 (Andy) kind of agree with that it still even though must have a moisture content of around 0 it is brilliant the Trott handle set sets it apart like a scat.

However the new Chase the short blade verison is a very similar principle with the edge and spine within 20mm it offers great coverage and picks up remarkably.

The finch is the one I'm trying to get used too I think the tonto has served well and the ss has a kind of good place.

I like to think about the bats I try most will never make the cut but the 1271 certainly did and does, that bat holds a special place.

There a bit of everything low density mega grains and a lower grade beasty funny thing is I love looking at shapes and seeing why it works or doesn't..

Certainly are better than some and on par with some.

I personally feel that a peak of a bat (as long it's a good bat) is the same in terms of performance. Narrows down to us, how we use it.

Just my two cents.

@jd163 I have found that the grading is mainly about how it looks.

The 1 stripe mullinator is an absolute gun and performs better than the 3 stripe. Haven't used the Pepsi yet as I'm saving that for a march bat but taps up well, I imagine it will be a lot more forgiving if I don't find the middle than the others but they are all awesome when you time the ball

Last few bats. Until I can get into my dads garage.....

2x ghost 500's 2.11
Probably the best value bats I've bought. Perform like a top end bat and look great for the price.

Bubble legend 2.9 refurbed and re labelled with b3 stickers. Old stickers we're looking very tatty.(http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad74/warney2009/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/C97B3658-F967-47F0-AAA4-8EF988C31E99.jpg) (http://s923.photobucket.com/user/warney2009/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/C97B3658-F967-47F0-AAA4-8EF988C31E99.jpg.html)

Safe to say I'm a little disgusted by this, but here's my collection in 4 categories!

To be culled by the end of the year:
(http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/af230/ch4d0m4n/IMG_8859.jpg) (http://s1010.photobucket.com/user/ch4d0m4n/media/IMG_8859.jpg.html)

Old school collection (Kit that was around when I started playing):
(http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/af230/ch4d0m4n/IMG_8860.jpg) (http://s1010.photobucket.com/user/ch4d0m4n/media/IMG_8860.jpg.html)

Bats I'm unsure as to whether to keep or not (Will probably sell about 6 of these on):
(http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/af230/ch4d0m4n/IMG_8858.jpg) (http://s1010.photobucket.com/user/ch4d0m4n/media/IMG_8858.jpg.html)

And bats I'm pretty happy with:

Same as me. I used one of my teammates for a whole season, Averaged 43 opening the batting for the season and was devastated when he broke it (How dare he use his own bat??) preseason the next year.

Lucky man! I have been searching far and wide for a decent original, no luck thus far  :(
I did see one for sale on gumtree (Australian site) but the stickers were hammered, bat looked ok, handle possibly cracked though!

Yes, a low density. It's unreal how big it is for the weight. I do have problems taking haired as it covers to many stumps lol.

@KW9221 BDM The Game and GM Six6. Scored 76* off 66 with the BDM last weekend. If outfield had been better, a century was guaranteed.

Wow!  Just interested in the heaviest and lightest in your collection.  Most used and least used. Ones you would never part with and ones you would be happy to get rid of, also your favourite shapes and stickers.

The smell of linseed must be intense!

Thanks for sharing.

@Chad,  If I remember correctly, you had an M&H Master (ST inspired bat), didn't you? Still have it?

And @Chad, normally, I'd say that I hate you :D but this time around, I feel I have some nice bats too. :D

Nice collection @Chad !

Which bats are your match bats?

You know, this season, I used 1.05% of my collection in matches - that's how little cricket I played! :-[ Match bat at the moment is the older styled B&S Supreme. I have a Warbird that needed a rehandle that I'm getting back from Matt which was also a match bat! There are so many bats in here that could be my match bats. :)

Damn @Chad! Planning on selling any old ones.  :D

A fair amount needs to be shifted, keep an eye out haha. :)

Lightest would have to be those old school Salix bats, around 2lb 4oz - 2lb 5oz. Heaviest is probably the B&S White Supreme at 3lb, but honestly, it feels a fair bit lighter.

Least used, there's a huge number of those, (It is absolutely sacrilegious to think that the Halestorm, my Monster H4L and my B&S White Supreme haven't been used, along with my Fifty50 Pro, Custom Pro etc.) and most used is probably the blank Millichamp and Hall Solution. (Not by me) The Salix Pod Players has seen a fair amount of use by my brother, not among the best bats I've had, but brother absolutely loved it. Was purchased from IJC back in 2012. Goes to show that it's whatever suits the batsman that's the most important!

The ones I wouldn't part with... If I had to pick 3, I probably won't part with the Salix Pod, L&W Reserve with outstanding grains, B&S Supreme match bat. Salix Pod in the hope that my brother will one day pick up cricket again, L&W Reserve because it was the bat I scored my first fifty with, and B&S because it's my current match bat. None of the monster bats in the hope that I'll play internationally. XD

In terms of favourite shapes, there are many. I am a fan of most shapes with not a huge amount of concaving, not too aggressive a duckbill or tapering towards the handle, and edges don't have to be HUGE. I do have a Trott shaped B3 in there, which looks pretty incredible!

@InternalTraining nope, I've never had an M&H Master, I did have an Amplus at one point! I do have some Sachin inspired shapes, with this BDM 'The Game Edition' being the most special. Weighs around the 2lb 9.5oz mark:

The Newberry is really messing with my OCD...

From left to right

Phantom - 2.10 from Uzi - hand picked and so worth it really lovely middle - in match bag for 2018
Unknown origin (poss Spartan) 2.10 multiple repairs & just re-handled at M&H, incredible bat & longest serving
County Mettle with Insignia stickers - bought for fun as used one for many years - low middle needs more nets
Jedi 2.9 with MRF stickers - bought from a nice chap in a supermarket car park in Devon - cleaned up well nicked by youngest son. Bloody lovely.
MRF - incredible to look at even better to bat with, 2.11 and arguably the best bat I’ve ever used
Robinson 1 - 2.11 early days with it. Goes well in nets. More concaved than I’m used to but v impressive quality
Robinson 2 - 2.11 this could be special. Starting using in matches end of season - team mates always like this one. It looks and feels really  good
NB 1 - bought v cheap as blank MSR it’s ugly on the back. But good net bat - 2.11 (sold to a mate now)
NB 2 - cheap again from Crossbat and it’s really very good - big sons match bat 2.9 and outstanding value
All bats have edge tape, scuff sheet & one grip

All 2.9 give or take a few oz and 3 x L540 length bats here and 3 traditional SH bats

Probably the least I have had in the last 5 years but plan to keep it that way for a while now

Mid/high but for me gives a better pick up and this is my ideal middle position. Most of the bats in the G&F bats and the GN neon which is a county Pro’s match bat from 2018 are mid high and for where i hit they ball seem to suit me well. I play a lot of the back foot as well. From these the Salix is probably the lowest middle with the exception of the Siren which i bought for t20 cricket mainly and if I’m totally honest because i like the stickers lol

Yep not sure anyone really comes to close to matching the finish they achieve, well no one of seen recently. The G&F is quite decent to be fair for a new to market brand but Salix are next level in that regard. Also the best pinging bat of the lot at the moment and it’s only tapped up a ball.

Not the prettiest SCAT I've seen but its brand new and never hit a ball. It's truely a wonderful piece of wood. Weighs 2.11 but picks up really well. I'm too scared to use it and I have enough other bats I like to use so it will probably stay brand new.
Only thing I wish it had was one of his yellow swirly grips he used to have.

I apologise for the black tape around the handle, it came like that.

There's some really cracking profiles in there mate, a lovely collection from some great batmakers

Yeah absolutely mate, all shorter blades and slightly different blade length/handle length combinations in there too.

One thing that's universal is they all either play nicely or, with the newer ones, tap up very well. The 'Viking' is a H4L sub bat so a proper H4L may be on the agenda eventually too and no doubt that would be a beaut as well!

Some great looking collections... I either sell or move on before getting another.

Currently down to 3 bats.  I'd feel guilty having so many beauties and feel they deserve a home as I'd be wasting them. That's not a dig at anyone just personal.

I tried this and you can see how well it went 😂

I think I'd feel much the same as you if I ever bought really expensive bats but mine are all sub-£230. By my reckoning the collection is the equivalent of having three G1 customs so it doesn't seem quite so daft!

One thing that I should do but keep 'forgetting' is getting the same bat in weight and profile but in different grades. Like many on here a net/wet/cheap balls bat in a lower grade and a match bat. Just for consistency. AT moment use 2 different bats that are noticeably different.

GM Matrix mate, believe Uzi Sports stock a good variety of these. Alternatively can get different colours on eBay easily enough.

The butterfly you made me is a lovely bat, can't go wrong with one for yourself! Can't wait for indoor nets to give it a run out.

I’ve recently purchased a dehumidifier for the room that I keep my bats in and cannot get over how much water it takes out of the air and how much it lowers humidity levels.

Any experts that can tell me the optimal settings that would be for perfect bats?

Why would you want over dry the air environment your bat is kept in?

Mine are all now out in the garage fattening up over winter, ready for next year.

I don't think leaving it in the garage is recommended either... Sealing the bat and leaving in a cool and dry room is what is generally recommended for storage

Sealing meaning oiling?

Don’t want to over dry just wondered about the best humidity level for storage over winter

Trying to remember but I’m sure GM keep everything to around 18 degrees

Remember a Keeley (then of Newbery) piece in one of the magazines saying normal room temperature.

How about in the wine cellar? That would likely be about perfect.
