Title: Junior sized cricket bats for adult players?
Post by: JGold on September 01, 2016, 09:11:56 PM
At the age of 21 I am returning to the wonderful sport that is cricket after a 4 year hiatus. I was a county player in my early teen years and for some reason i just lost interest.
Anyway, on to the subject. I am a very small adult, 5'4 (165) to be exact and I'm looking for a bat that although being the right length for me is also heavier than your typical junior bat with a huge middle (I'm not familiar with how different weights feel but from what other people use I'm thinking around the 2lb6/7oz mark). Do big companies such as GN, Kookaburra, Puma etc. make these types of bats or would it be best to go to a custom bat maker who can make a bat to my needs? (Although the price may then be an issue).
There are some junior bats on sale at the moment that are so tempting but im not sure if they would suit what im looking for! In particular this Puma evoPower 1 SE... http://www.prodirectcricket.com/products/Cricket-Bats-Puma-evoPower-1-Youth-SE-Cricket-Bat-Natural-Black-Gunmetal-894254-93303.aspx? (http://www.prodirectcricket.com/products/Cricket-Bats-Puma-evoPower-1-Youth-SE-Cricket-Bat-Natural-Black-Gunmetal-894254-93303.aspx?)

So yeah, any help would be greatly appreciated! And if anyone has any experience with the junior model of the Puma evoPower 1 SE then please share!

Kookaburra do a small men's size and GM do a womens bat. They're full width blades but are shorter and lighter than a Short Handle

OK, I'm biased as I'd be more than happy to make a bat for you! But, I reckon I speak for most if I suggest that the junior bats you might see retailed are unlikely to be top quality willow, or likely to be made in the UK. Not meaning to be disrespectful of the brand's business model, rather speaking as the parent of a 13 year old. Juniors have a habit of growing extremely quickly, so few parents will spend enormous amounts of money on their bats, for the 3 months of use they get. So, they are made quickly and cheaply, from willow which probably wouldn't be considered for a serious quality senior bat. The lads I know over here who get into the Suffolk sides, will often get their bats and kit from local batmakers, so as to ensure the willow and manufacturing is of higher quality.

My guess is, if you buy that Puma bat, it won't last you long. It's great you're coming back into the game, but if you were a county player before, you'll be wanting to play at a decent level and you'll quickly tire of poor results from cheap equipment.

Also, junior bats usually have shorter handles, as well as shorter and often narrower blades. Your hands in batting gloves are likely as big as any 6 footer, so a normal short handle would be appropriate. I strongly recommend you approach your local batmakers for a senior size bat, possibly with an inch or so taken off the blade, to compensate for your height. I really doubt you'll need anything shorter than that. If you're upfront about your budget, you'll probably be surprised at the quality of bat that you could get for your money, and you can discuss your specifications directly in terms of weight, middle size and middle location. It will cost more than the Puma, but as with most things, you get what you pay for.

If you know exactly how short a bat you need, you can go the custom route which I took earlier. Here are pics of some of my bats:

I think because of the 2lb 6ounce weight you will need to go custom as most Harrows are 2lb 5 ounces max that said there are some heavier but they you don't come across them ready made often.Being short   My  match bat is a 2lb 4  ounce  GN S/H bat full width  and is a big bat for the weight but picks up light

@Seniorplayer is that the Kaboom you sanded down?

Slightly off topic but I did a refurb on a Slazenger recently that took next to no weight out of it. Your hand sanding weight reduction is seriously impressive!

I got a hell4leather devil weighing 2lb 9 ounce that wasn't custom made just need to look a little harder to find Harrow bats in heavier weights

Yeah another thing is the width of it. I'd like it to be the length of a size 6/harrow but the width of a normal adult bat. Pretty sure its impossible to find a bat that specific unless you go custom.

GM Women's size bat is that exact specification I think

Also it is recommended that at your height you use an Harrow you can get Harrows in top willow I have an unblemished 12 grain Prestige which really pings brought direct from GN.

No Cam after I sanded the Kaboom down a teammate had it for the indoor league for 25.00 that's reminded me he hasn't paid me yet!

Yes hand sanding is  quite time consuming especially getting the perfect finish the bat that's S/H at full width is A GN with carbon  fibre which assists the lightness.

I'm 5'4" and have a H4L nv in harrow that weighs 2.9 and it goes incredibly well. The width difference is so negligible you'd hardly notice and that meant I could have a Grade1 for about £120. Great bat and a bargain!!  :D

Does it ping just as well as an adult bat? Someone earlier said that they save the 'best wood' for the adult bats and use the not so good wood for the junior versions...

I have a UZI harrow pro (2.5) and a T-rapta harrow (2.8lb) - they are both as good as any grade 1 bat in terms of ping.

I highly recommend the UZI harrow pro bats. you will be hard pressed to find a better soft pressed willow :)

@Uzi Sports - Asad, this might be right up your alley.

I think I will be better suited to a size 6 bat. If you don't mind me asking why are your junior bats so inexpensive compared to some other junior bats that sell for upwards of £150?? Considering your bats are grade 1 willow as well!!! Also, is it the exact same willow that is used for your adult versions of the Fireblade? They look like really really nice sticks!
