Title: New Skipper
Post by: Neon Cricket on February 10, 2017, 08:48:16 AM
Can't imagine it'll be anyone but Root in the end, however Strauss is clearly exploring his options!

What, no interview for Chris Woakes?

I'd love to see Benji given the vice-captains role

Whats everyone's issue with Woakes?

Think it is more just Strauss covering his bases with the media and canvasing/checking with senior players.

And most importantly it allows him to decide the best appointment for VC by interviewing Stokes and Broad.

Surely it's going to be Root (c) and Stokes (vc) and all this is just posturing for the media's sake?

Strauss probably knows who he wants but by interviewing everyone who's expressed an interest or been part of the Captainacy setup hes doing his job properly he's  also seen to be doing correctly.

England need a Captain who's place in the team is rock solid.

Im not suggesting he should be captain for one minute....... just seems to be disliked

This too! He needs to confirm who will be VC and make it look as though the correct process has been followed.
I suspect that Stokes will be VC and Broad will be seen as the bowling leader of the pack! And the VC if Stokes is injured!

Thought i heard Strauss say that as part of the "process" he would speak to the senior players in the team to get their opinion

You're right he did say that actually, perhaps that's why Broad is in the meeting? To be the voice of the senior players?

Out of interest, has Stokes had any experience skippering at any level in the professional game?

Just VC in some England white ball games I think.

To be fair, judging by this winter it's more than half the bloody team.

Woakes has been a pretty successful skipper when he has done the job for his county

Root only has 4 first class games as captain too, right?

Had Cook captained Essex much before he was made captain?

England  need a skipper who is going to be  without question your first name on the team sheet

Doesn't have to be 1st on sheet but has to be sure of his place in his own right not just in because he is a good captain

Title: Re: New Skipper

Why?

Okay you need a Captain who is going to be a regular in the side some one  you know  is going to be worth his place over a long period apart from  injuries.

That's what I meant. Usually though  when your Captain and available and have no loss of form   your names the first on the team sheet.

I'd agree to an extent with that, but I'd disagree 100% that you always want your best player to be skipper.

How do you explain Mike Brearley then? Undoubtedly one of England's finest captain's but by most people's thoughts wouldn't have got into that side at all if he wasn't skipper.

Mike Brearley the academic deep thinker and the  best captain Ian Botham said he played at  test level for.
Seem to recall England needed an opening bat Brearley took the job  and  when  you consider the around the world test bowlers he was facing  he did a decent job .

Woakes is certain of a place in our test team. Not really saying he has any chance of the captaincy, but to think he shouldn't be in the team isn't fair.

Nothing to do with fairness
where' was the consistency in India  also think that if  England have all there bowlers fit and firing  by the end of the U.K. Season and looking towards Australian conditions later  this year he may not  be as certain of his place in the side  as some think.

Never suggested that your best player should be skipper that's been proven many times not to work.

To be fair, once you've been made skipper you're always gonna be the first name written on the team sheet!

It is very likely Root will be captain, so in 4 years time he will be 30 and ready to play just as a batsman again for another 6 years.

Do England really need to name a vice captain? It doesn't mean anything.

I suppose it matters more in sub continent where a skipper may need to leave the pitch as a matter of 'urgency' .... leaving the vice captain to bring himself onto bowl...

I wouldn't go as far as to say certain. I reckon if everyone is fit the attack would be Anderson, broad, wood, Stokes and Ali.
