Saw this in the Telegraph, the figures are absolutely staggering, talking football numbers here.
Some of the Details -
New TV rights for 2020-2024 go up for 'auction' in May
They will split into 4 packages to help attract FTA TV bidders
Those packages will include the new T20 tournament.
The ECB is looking to land between £230 million-£250m per year for five years from 2020 to 2024
Talks at an advanced stage with the BBC, which is confident of becoming the ECB’s free-to-air partner for the new Twenty20 competition and has promised to give it the same level of exposure as the FA Cup.
It is also understood the BBC is about to re-enter the cricket market by agreeing a deal to show highlights from this summer’s Champions Trophy in England

fully appreciate this is a high end business highest bidders wins cut throat ruthless less deal that is modern day cricket
BUT
In my humble opinion the ECB, Strauss and all have a DUTY to spread cricket to the masses, that's to the working class families who want to find out more about our game, our superstars, and the beautiful game
because if they don't it will remain a middle class sport.
im glad I got that off my chest.
:)
-
They don't see the wood through the trees as they want cash not to spread the game. they have said previously that they think the way to spread the game is to sell to highest bidder then put a fraction back into grass roots but that has not worked now it looks as if they will try v 2.0 of that
IPL a success as India has tons of cash to throw at it and is national sport
Big bash a success for me as on free to air tv with big public engagement and big stadiums plus pretty much guaranteed weather and test stars play in it
Our one above will not have England players (or maybe other int players) as test matches on, only 1/5 if not 1/8 on free to air ,small stadiums and if I read right they are considering running a county t20 comp as well as this?
we seem to have taken the worst parts of other comps and combined them
-
In my opinion, they should be streaming it live on YouTube - like the early days of the IPL. That was great for people who are at work, out and about and probably (as I don't know), more accessible for teenagers and the like who are always at a computer these days.

I actually feel pissed off and emotional thinking about how you guys don't get tests etc on free to air . As an aussie , the ashes mean the world to me . Beating the best possible english team makes it feel better . Knowing you are exposing the game to everyone, not just sky customers , would improve the english talent pool , and thus , beating you guys would feel all the more important still .

ahem..... :) well done in India, far better than we did. The Ashes mean far more to us we have the urn in the Lords museum !!
seriously.....test cricket, our national team, should be free to air in the UK so it's accessable to the masses. viewing figures for 2005 home series were off the scale when we beat the best Aussie team seen on these shores for a very long time(has there been a better test series ever?)
the reason for massive fees from TV companies in the UK is to re-invest in grass roots so the game remains flourishing
this myth has been well and truly exposed here, the game is dying a death at amateur level
it needs a shot in the arm in England, and it needs it now. We all love the game, 99 per cent cent amateur players here im sure want their to be the same game available to the next generation.
-
(has there been a better test series ever?)
06/07 of course. :D
-
If it's going FTA then 8 games out of 38 still feels like nothing
-
06/07 of course. :D
not forgetting 2010/11 either.. oh wait... ;)
-
not forgetting 2010/11 either.. oh wait... ;)
No no. We're absolutely forgetting that one. :(
-
Any coverage that takes the game to the masses creates interest and boosts playing numbers particulary at grass roots is a step in the right direction
-
No no. We're absolutely forgetting that one. :(
haha...
I did hear this years Ashes is not on Sky it's on BT sport.
not 100 per cent sure that is correct
-
That will be the case. BT bought the rights to from CA last year.

That seems quite ridiculous. ...is bt sport part of a sky subscription or would you be forced to pay for yet another service ?

BT would flip it the other way and say you don't have to have sky to subscribe to BT.

You can get it through Sky at at extra cost, or you can have BT on its own. If BT were to win all cricket i would cancel my sky sports subscription as i dont really watch football anymore and i'd rather watch paint dry than watch F1
-
You can also get bt sports with some phone networks, I got it "free" with my latest EE mobile contract

absolutely, I only have Sky for the cricket and thinking of dumping the whole thing and tracking on BBC.
I don't see a situation thou where BT sport has all cricket coverage.....just don't think that will happen in the future
-
Wow , being a cricket fan in england sucks....expensive, convoluted . I'd be kodi-ing it up big time !

yes it's a real pain. it's very much a Sky/Murdoch dominated environment.
it's harmed cricket in this Country, in my opinion. We are now seeing just how much exclusive TV rights has damaged the game at grass roots.
viewing figures for cricket have been going down, and continue to do so. That is an undisputed fact
a sad one actually.

Different services

Isnt that only for 3 or 6 months though?

24 the entire length of my contract

I think the ECB are hoping they will go for it to drive the price up as realistically i cant see it going much higher than it already is worth.
My mate has BT so i watch on the iPad with his login currently. I think i'll get a device such as an Apple TV to put it on the big screen for the ashes
-

Ah ok, nice! When i was renewing they were only offering 3 or 6 months as far as i could see. Decent deal for you though mate

I've been with orange/ee for years so I think that helped and they had a decent sale on in march
I'm lucky as I have bt and my parents sky go on my phone so I have best if both, miss free to air cricket remember watching 2005 ashes on channel 4

Is anyone a baseball fan? No? Just me?
Well anyway, I pay roughly £80 per year for the At Bat subscription. You can watch every major league baseball game (there are quite a few as each team plays just short of 200 from spring training onwards) live, as live, condensed or highlights. It also has loads of other good features like ball tracking (hawkeye) etc. It works on your phone, laptop, apple tv and amazon fire stick.
I'm not trying to advertise it at all. Just think though, if you could do that with cricket.
-
Last time I heard, the ECB were sat on a big pile of money. Why do they suddenly need to triple the cost to the broadcasters?
Oh yeah.

Me to! Not seen this but seems like a good idea especially for cricket
Who you support?

2005 cricket was massive in England as it was on Channel 4 and could be watched by almost all the country. It Was being talked about by almost the whole country and there was such a massive uptake of youth playing the game.
Fast forward 12 years and it's a struggle to find many people that have any interest in even talking about cricket and participation levels are down as well.
Cricket needs to be on free to air in some capacity to grow!

I'm a Yankee fan, not the most original choice but they were the first team I saw live.

Same here! Although I first saw one of they're minor league affiliates down in charleston! Yankee stadium is something else!
-
The At Bat app is great!
MLBAM, is something else though, years ahead of others in the space. We will be waiting a while a cricket version of the app! let alone a version that supports FC cricket.

About time skysports had a dedicated cricket channel.
Allow's cricket followers to just buy the one channel

Looking at the pricing arrangement I think many people will just keep all the channels.
£18 for one, £22 for two, £26 for three or £27.50 for them all.

I tried to work out how much i currently pay for sports to see if this is worth it but found it quite confusing as my bill says Sky Q Bundle with Cinema and Sports - £80. I guess it could vary but does anyone know how much the full sky sports costs currently?
-
Don't know how much full price Sky costs, but who pays full price anyway?
I pay £19/Month for basic package & Sky Sports...
I would definitely drop it down to just Sky Cricket if the price difference made sense though.
