Any thoughts on this one starting today - it's rather crept up on me and seems a little low key.
I expect the Saffers to prove a pretty tough test, and it will be a job for us to keep their ferocious batting in check. I suspect it will suit us to chase down their totals.
Does our team pick itself, no likely surprises?
Perhaps a weakness for SA is their back up seam bowling?
-
ah. at last, an England thread.... :)
I could be in a minority here but make us second favourites
should be a run feast I reckon
any tickets left Monday? might be worth a trip to London taan
amla and ab de v to shine
-
england to win but it wont be easy, i think we have too much batting especially middle order, should be a run fest
-
Cue three whole months of De Kock jokes
-
SA win toss and prefer to chase! They are No1 ODI at the moment so will be an interesting match!
I would love to see England do well but anything is possible with AB playing!
Entertaining it should be ;)
-
Plukett in good selection on that pitch but no room for Bairstow.

don't underestimate Amla thou. AB is out of this world no qurstion.
but you would have to go back quite a long way to see someone hit the ball so beautifully and destructively from a slight build and with a light bat.
Actually reminds me a bit of Azuruddin....
-
I could be proved wrong but still not sure why England would play Ali and Rashid unless the wicket is expected to turn? Hey-ho!
And Amla is one of my fave batsman to watch so would never underestimate! De Kock is capable of magic too!
-
England 1 Alex Hales, 2 Jason Roy, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Buttler, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 Mark Wood
South Africa 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Chris Morris, 9 Andile Phehlukwayo, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Imran Tahir
Jeez, they are two strong sides!
-

de kock !!!! don't start !!! :)
ali and Rashid is the plan we think....and no place for jonny B.......I think this line up is going to start Champions league games
-
I still think that the following would be even stronger!
JJ Roy, AD Hales, JE Root, EJG Morgan*, Bairstow, BA Stokes, JC Buttler†, MM Ali (or Rashid), CR Woakes, LE Plunkett, MA Wood
Still gives you Wood, Plunkett, Stokes and Woakes for pace, then Ali and Root to spin it! And the batting looks even stronger now!
Just my opinion.
-
No bairstow (no swearing please) sake
-

To take the pace of the ball v De Knock
-
No bairstow (no swearing please) sake
id have PH's team above. one spinner, Root to fill in. Bairstow plays from my armchair selection.
anyone who caught a radio interview the other day perhaps noticed , as I did, Bairstow not shy of an opinion and 'not the number 1 popular person in the dressing room'......now without 2 and 2 making 5 it did make me think slightly. :)
-
When you hear Holding this is the confirmation of the English summer.
RONS
-
Parnell gets Roy.
3 for 1
-
Parnell is a very good bowler in England if there's swing and his brain is switched on.
-
Why exactly should Bairstow be an automatic selection? If he comes in at 5, that means Stokes and Buttler being wasted at 6 and 7. Bairstow's only realistic hope is Roy/Hales getting axed.
-

Parnell still only 27 :o been around forever
-

well because he is one of the best 5 batsmen in the Country. Butler and stokes are not wasted down there. everyone goes for it in today team to try to hit 400
it's not 2007 Felix.
-

Buttler has the 3 fastest 100s ever for England therefore he should be guaranteed a top 6 berth. Stokes is the crown jewel. He's guaranteed a slot in the top 5. Bairstow's list A record is poor so hardly knocking the door down. If we needed another opener Sam Hain averages 55 and has more hundreds thab Bairstow anyway.
And no side picks only batsmen. You need role players. Only Roy, Hales and Morgan don't bowl in this side. If you axed Ali/Rashid that's another option reduced.
-

Because Roy is not in form and Johny is
-
Buttler's a once in a generation player, tbh he's probably a bit low at 6!
@ppccopener , maybe Bairstow isn't the most popular player because he keeps having a moan in the media about not getting selected? I know I'd have been pretty unimpressed if I was an England player with the stuff he came out with when Billings got given the gloves Vs Ireland. In contrast, Moeen was pretty generous with praise for Rashid when dropped in the same games.

totally agree re butler, he is amazing to watch.
must admit must of missed the media with YJB moaning about not getting picked, hav'nt seen anything of that.
it's a team game at the end of the day everyone has to fit into the ethic, I never had bairstow down as a tricky character thou-not in a million years.
but to get him into this team...im 100 per cent sure he should be in. who to leave out? tricky......but this top level sport.
for me...Root bowls a bit, Ali misses out.
but if you take @Seniorplayer 's point and Roy is in no form at all...Root moves up to open, Bairstow slots in. Ali still plays in the side.
:)
-
Surely you have Buttler in with the option of promotion when the situation is right though.
-
Ho Joe you could have left that bouncer !
-
Oh Joseph.
-
Surely you have Buttler in with the option of promotion when the situation is right though.
For sure. If we happen to be behind the rate-I cant see that myself the way we play, but say we are....can't think of a better player to come in with 20 overs to go.
Even butler needs a bit of time to see the ball. probably the only non power hitter we have in the top 7 is Root.........but he has many other qualities
-
What an awful review
-
The match is a day nighter its a Beautiful day for seeing the ball the pitch is a belter for batting yet both Captains before the start of play said they would have bowled first shows how confident both sides are in there batting line ups ie
You score 300 and we will get them
-
we are a bit far from 300 at the moment. we need a big score today
they have some batting !
-
Interesting (?) stat brought up on Cricinfo: "We are now in the strange situation where Eoin Morgan has scored more ODI runs than anyone who has ever played for England, but he is not (yet) England's record ODI run scorer"
-

How many did he score for iIreland

744
-
Bairstow needs to be in this side. He's not exactly a FIG JAM Kevin Pieterson
Heavens to Betsy.
-
Bairstow has shown that he is disappointed at his treatment, which I think is entirely fair given that he has been the form player in England for fully the years now. The question shouldn't be "how do you fit him in" so much as "who has to make way".

35 ball 50 for Mo just when we need it
right who said Moeen gets left out

3rd ton for Morgan this year. Who wanted him removed again?

Also, I thought Ben could catch?

Poor shot selection by the south Africans

Didn't look to be picking Rashid which makes run scoring very difficult. Good performance by us thou

According to vic marks on the radio, woaksey hit 87 mph, wood 88... :)
That's gas Chris....or whatever is is they say these days( can't beat 'serious wheels for me) and I'm not talking diamonds cut split rim alloys.

Don't see how you can give someone man of the match who gets taillenders out when the game is all but lost and who gets a wicket bowling long hops
Let the storm begin
SA need batters who can hang in there with AB.

Me? And have faith!! They stand the best chance they have had for years and if Morgan is right and this is he best odi team he's played in, (which includes a World Cup winning squad) then we have a damn good chance!

as you were watching you will have seen Mr Woakes get that well renowned tailender Quinton De Kock out too, must be terrible and dropped instantly!
-
A firing Morgan makes this England batting line up look so much more potent and secure! If he continues to get decent runs in the middle order then I think we have a very good chance of winning the tournament.

morgan is all or nothing but when it's 'all' he gets tons and they win games.
he was bigging up Ali after the game it's clear he is playing regardless. It was a superb knock by Mo thou yesterday
Im lucky enough to have tickets for the final and at the moment i'm expecting England to be there :)

The ball went so high in the air that wicket should have been credited solely to Butler :D

England's 339 yesterday was our 20th score over 300 since the 2015 World Cup.
8 more than SA in 2nd.

Would be interesting to know how many 300+ scores were made before this. Wouldn't be surprised if it was about the same or not much more than 20!

There might be a couple missing from here as it stops at a score of 302 but just taking this list there have been 31 scores of over 300 before the World Cup I think

Think playing on better pitches (roads) as opposed to the green tops Anderson use to ask for has also helped
-

it might well do, but it's only a couple of years ago we were miles behind how other countries played one day cricket as well. bayliss morgan have changed that, and the players of course.
it was years back I remember a WC jayasuriya gong for it from ball one
I think that was against us as well. :)
-
ok lads...we know Stokes playing means we can play Ali......and im not saying Ali only plays when he does but Morgan pretty much said it on interview
now...stokes looks to be out of the next match
we don't have a class all rounder (who didn't play) to replace him so where so the selectors go?
a bowler(ball), or jonny bairstow .....
now this could be interesting selection :)
-

Bairstow win the toss bat first and score big runs take he game away from SA
-

Your right Alex Mr Woakes did get one proper batsman out that said all the SA batters looked as if they were feeling the scoreboard pressure...
-
Bairstow win the toss bat first and score big runs take he game away from SA
that's the way I would go this time. England in the past have looked to fill positions rather than players...gawd knows how many times we played an allrounder after Both, in truth none were up to scratch
Stokes is world class, if we don't have anyone close to him, it's got to be a specialist
-
It's not the England way though to bowl second and pressure teams with there fielding they prefer under Morgan to bat second and pace themselves in a run chase.

Forget that @edge Woaksey out injured !!! What a cataclysmic disaster
Right that that I'm not even watching without Chris!!
Jake ball in, he's got wheels!!
-
SA win the toss and Bowl first again.
3 changes for SA - Maharaj, Behardien & Pretorious in, Parnell, Tahir & Duminy out
1 change for ENG - Ball in, Woakes out (Injured, 3-4 days)
-

Bloody IPL! Woakes is a lot more crucial to the England side than he gets credit for, good test for Ball against SA though.
-
Rabada really is excellent
-
Roy's woefully out of form. Surely time to drop him
-
Errrrrrr, no
-
I'm following the text commentary at work on the BBC website and I swear some of the people that text in have never watched cricket before in their lives......
"I simply don't understand why Root's position is never questioned. He is far too slow for one day cricket. Every time. His strike rate never gets above 80 and he puts pressure on everyone else. Bairstow is a far superior one day player.
Richard in London"
Have a word with yourself Richard in London.
-
Lucky to be in there to an extent, but Stokes really is something else. Hope to see a 300+ score here
-
Not sure if Ben has made a deal with Satan or what, but he's made SA pay!
-
Benji needs to take care of his left knee. Champions Trophy is a week away and England can't afford injured players. England are the favorites to win the Champions Trophy but also don't want peak too early either.
-
Take out SA's top guys and they have nothing left in their batting.
-
Mark Wood you absolute beauty, although that was a classic SA choke
-
^ SA just cannot close the deal. Sheesh.
-
Pre tournament practice for SA - get that choking out of the way
-

Not the biggest choke of the day.
93 runs of 41 balls last wicket partnership from Pakistan against Bangladesh at Edgbaston to win the game.
#BatDeep
-
Made in Durham.
-
England need to be careful about Benji's knee and peaking too early.
It is probably better for SA to lose a few to better asses their weaknesses. They need a higher strike-rate replacement for Duminy/Ferhan.
-
What a fabulous last over from Wood brilliant.
England now have a reliable death bowler.
-
^ It was great!
England got amazing talent!
-
Rather than play in the third ODI With the series won England let Stokes rest his knee till Bangladesh on Thursday
-
Dawson, Finn, Roland-Jones called into the squad. Must mean everything now got more than just Woakes and Stokes as injury concerns? Presumably one of the spinners at least for them to call Dawson up (who's just finished a championship game today on day 3).

Stokes is irreplaceable and so is an inform Ali l hope they are okay v Bangladesh on Thursday.
-
Sigh
-
Oh dear mr Roy. His woeful form continues
-
Do we have to have that awkward conversation about Roy?
-
Oh Joe! Deary me.
-
What awkward conversation? They're not going to drop him just because he's had a series where he hasn't done anything.
On the other hand this sets up for a nice YJB double ton, great prep for carrying the drinks
-
3 down. Over to you bairstow. Perfect chance for him
-
4down
Can we says this was always gonna happen at some point with our opener constantly failing??
-
4 down wheels well off now. Suspect bairstow at 15 no after we are all out For 50 could have a right go in the dressing room
'My one chance and you muppets can't bat'
Haha :)
As for Roy....out of from and yes @GoodLeave it's so close to the start of the proper matches but carrying a guy in the tournament won't work. It's tough he's a terrific player but if your out of form your out quick. Hard game it has always been.
Root up to open for me, bairstow slots in.
-
5 down !! Glad I didn't go to lords today.
-
Surely just whacking is not the way here
As internationals should England not be able to rebuild?
Just throwing it away
-
This is really poor cricket. Clearly not a 350 day, use your brain and give the bowlers the first 15 overs
-
5 down !! Glad I didn't go to lords today.
Feel disappointed for the ones that did.
You expect better at the home of cricket.
-
The block has gone out of the game
First ball 5 down I know let's try a big drive
-
I'm going to have to find something else to do for the afternoon aren't I?

I agree, on his day he's brilliant. But now 10 innings without a 50? Do we have another ODi opener, or do we have a reshuffle and move Root up?
-
Root to open stick with Bairstow
-
I agree, on his day he's brilliant. But now 10 innings without a 50? Do we have another ODi opener, or do we have a reshuffle and move Root up?
Would very much doubt England want to make any changes now with a game on Thursday against Bangladesh....
End of the day your best batsmen are your best, when it's flat most score runs, what happens when it's bowler friendly? Yes not many wickets are these days but this is England and there are some quality bowlers around.
A lot of our guys have no feet movement, our very best batsman do have and that's the difference in ability.
Bairstow for me, I've watched him a lot and I think he is one of the best 6 in the Country now.
Root to move up....we can still play Ali and Rashid in that team plus the seamers.
Roy has brilliant ability and it's a tough call this late, but it's a cruel game with no runs behind you.he should be left out for the first game.
-
Surely just whacking is not the way here

Maybe they think there is no point in making 200, that they might as well make 150 aiming for 250+, makes for a pretty dull game if they do though.
-
Root to open stick with Bairstow
This is the way I'm going.
Hales
Root
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Bairstow
Ali
Woakes
Willey
Rashid
Plunkett
Swap Willey for Ball (Bat 11) if you feel short on bowling.
-
No Wood?
-

Gah!
Willey out, Wood in.
Guess I'll never be a selector.
-

At least give yourself a chance getting 200 if early wickets
Just brainless saying oh well we've lost anyway so just swing and we'll see what we get
Yjb and Willey were at least fighting
Yjb showing why he has to be in somehow
-
We are rebuilding a bit and scoring runs, who knows 200 might give us a chance on this wicket.
Bairstow is batting with brains and technique, Wiley did well too.
Roland Jones can bat I think
-
Roland jones bat looks an absolute stunner
-
. There was no need for Johnny to come down the track.
But at least he played himself in rather than try and belt it from the off.
-
This is the way I'm going.
Hales
Root
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Bairstow
Ali
Woakes
Willey
Rashid
Plunkett
Swap Willey for Ball (Bat 11) if you feel short on bowling.
You need three seamers. Wouldn't leave Wood out
-
Mindless batting all round with the exception of YJB, Roland Jones and Willey but even then the two that were dismissed did so in poor fashion - for only three double figures scores to be made in an international game is appalling. Only 2 maybe 3 of the top 7 were out to good balls. Ridiculous cricket.

YES!

Jake Ball and Toby Roland-Jones are nothing more than county trundlers. England would've been better off having a look at the Overton twins.

Roland-Jones snares Amla and Ball has just cleaned up De Kock.
Any more expert opinions you'd like to share? ;)

You say ridiculous cricket but this is way England play now. Morgan has said all along that they will go hard at it and if the get rolled for 100 then so be it.
They would rather see that than boring cricket. This is one of the main reasons England have scored so many runs in ODI's
-
I saw the England dismissals and the lines SA bowled were just perfect! Imagine this caliber of bowling showing up in the Champions Trophy and the world's "T-20" batsmen will have short stays at the crease!
Bring back that bowling, lads!

-
interesting post match interviews I thought, Morgan saying Roy stays in the side as he has scored a lot of runs in the past. Bayliss wouldn't commit that far.
it's a tough call this one, Roy has potential to change a game, Bairstow...well.....he's just one of the best in the Country, test and one day cricket.
We are going to play two spinners it seems so there's no real spaces available.
a few years ago we were rubbish at one day cricket, now we cant get everyone in the team who should be.
I would leave Roy out of Thursday, it' tough but he's not in form and Bairstow has been for a long time.
-
The thing is if root wants to stay at three Bairstow could open but cant see them dropping Roy
-
Rashid / Ali to go and Bairstow in, possible Ali out - although a handy bowler and a very good bat. Only other alternative could be to get rid of Buttler for Barstow but then again, the question of potential comes to the fore. Buttler shows flashes of brilliance.
-
Nor can I - the ginger leprechaun as good as said "Jason is my mate and Jonny isn't, so there". Its the most obviously wrong call, but I cannot see them making the change this late in the piece.
-
Hales and Roy have opened for a while - why disrupt this partnership before a major tournament? Who would open with Hales if Roy was to go?
-
The only option imo is a direct swap Roy for Bairstow as opener, I don't think they will do it (and I'm not 100% sure they should either) but that's (in my opinion) the only way to get YJB into the side right now, all this talk of dropping Ali is rubbish he's just had a good couple of all round performances against the no1 ODI side why would you drop him?
-
I am sorry, but I can't see that the wickets will be that dry that they will merit 2 spin bowlers plus Root who can pass as a third spinner if called for!
And changing the opening pair is not really viable at this late stage!! So it would still be (assuming they are fit!)
Roy
Hales
Root
Morgan
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Ali/Rashid
Woakes
Plunkett
Wood
Obviously change 4-6 round however, but I still think that would be the strongest team.
-
England have played two spinners at home in 14 of 18 ODIs played since the Australia series in 2015. Only two of the four single spinner games were live matches.
-

Because Roy is out of form and Johnnys in form Root could open and Johnnys as done the opening job for his county.
-
A couple of games in a tinpot county competition is just like opening in a world tournament....
Good players come good.
-
For all YJB's form and Roy's stinky run. there's still very little between their ODI averages and Roy has likely opened for all the games he's played. I like JB but don't really see that there's a spot for him in the side at the moment.

Bairstow has already come good and has been good the last eighteen months...

Averages don't count for much when your out of form pick the inform guys and your more likely to win.
-
Not in ODIs
-

You pick players with experience and hope they come good. If you look at teams that win big competitions, they are won with players with an average of 80 caps or so. The basics of selection should be identify players and stick with thme and they repay your trust. History is littered with people who couldn't buy a run suddenly clicking and winning games.
-
For what it's worth I think Roy has earned the right to open, he's been in that gig for nearly two years now and for the most part it works. Form is temporary, class permanent etc.
Not sure about playing Stokes solely as a batsman as has been mentioned, mind.
-

You have to maintain a degree of consistency of selection though, if everyone feels they're playing for their place every innings you won't see the team scoring 300 very often I'd bet.

There also comes a time in most players careers regardless of how many caps when they keep failing to Say your out of form go back to your county score runs and we will have you back.

Fine, but not when you've been planning for a world tournament for two years. It's not three games against the West Indies. No other England batter plays like Roy at the top of the order. Would you really drop a player with a SR of 102 after 40 games?

Playing devils advocate, you are right - noone else scores singles figures every bloody game!
-
Indeed, five iffy ODIs in a row isn't great, but I'm confident it will come.
And for the record, I think Bairstow is a purer, better batsman, but not the type of player to replace Roy at this stage.

did anyone else go yesterday? it was a dubious sort of honour to watch such a capitulation, but I can't believe the absolute nonsense that has been spouted about the collapse. From Broad saying "we haven't done a lot wrong" to various pundits talking about how well the Saffers bowled, am I alone in thinking it was just a case of poor shot after terrible shot?
I'm all for England playing an aggressive form of cricket but when you arrive at the crease at 20-5 you might consider being a bit more circumspect. No, just me?

However much you paid, you were robbed of a drivel induced day

Agree it's alright saying we want players who go hard but to keep bringing the slips into play trying to drive the pitched up ball on or just outside off stump is poor cricket.

Well yes if he's out of form because they don't win you matches and you have an inform player on the sidelines
Anyway here's hoping Roy comes good as he's certain to play.
-
That's why it's a team game, not everyone is in form at the same time.
England are brilliant at changing thinks at the last minute in limited overs cricket... And it's always gone BRILLIANTLY
-
You say ridiculous cricket but this is way England play now. Morgan has said all along that they will go hard at it and if the get rolled for 100 then so be it.
They would rather see that than boring cricket. This is one of the main reasons England have scored so many runs in ODI's
There's going hard and 'power hitting', having attacking intent and playing your shots and then there's just being out and out silly. As a pro they should know that they cannot go in when we are 4 down and play a languishing drive in their first over having no real idea what the all is doing or the pitch for that matter.

Yesterday wasn't
-
It was a dead rubber.
They did bloody well to win the match on Saturday. No one was carping about all-out aggression in that game.

or worse, watching all your mates snick off and thinking you can play the same shot and get away with it?! :D

To be fair, Morgan's whole 'shoot the lights out' mentality is what's got England scoring 320+ regularly, but will inevitably lead at least occasionally to them getting shot out for not many. Easy to moan when it does happen, but without the whole batting lineup going aggressive in a big way they wouldn't be scoring as many as they usually do. Be happy about the big scores and suck it up when it goes wrong is their attitude I think, happy to take that point of view as a fan also! Otherwise bring Trott and Cook back, we'll never get bowled out for 150 but we won't be making 350+ too often either.
-
Yeah fair enough we score runs regularly but the key is consistency - you don't see the New Zealand rugby side being like we play attacking rugby so it's okay if we lose 1 in 10 games - absolutely not. At a professional level there still has to be some form of sense. Nothing should be robotic. It's not like 'we've been given this game plan we must stick to it religiously' they are all capable of thinking "damn our attacking cricket is backfiring let's reign it in a touch and rebuild and then go again". I just think if we are intent on becoming the best side in the world then "accepting the risk of getting rolled" is not a good enough mentality
-
Willey out, Wood in.
Fnar. :D :D
-
Looking forward to the Test series. Should be good. No Steyn is a shame though.
