Title: Clubs in East Sussex
Post by: mohawks94 on July 30, 2017, 04:23:08 PM
Hi all,

I'm moving down to Brighton at the end of summer for university, and I am in a quandary about which club to join next season. I have the option to join Firle, who are ESCL div 2, my brother is the 1s captain and I am guaranteed to bat in the top 5 and bowl. However, this would be a slight drop in level compared to where I am playing at the moment. My plan is to try and net with a few sides and see which ones I like before committing to anywhere, so does anyone have any knowledge of the Sussex premier division or ESCL division 1? I want to play at the highest level possible where I would still get a decent game.

NB my brother has told me that there is no point in me joining Firle if they get relegated as he reckons I would be wasted in div3.

Thanks in advance!

Know it well mate, know your brother too. Hailsham are a decent club, got a very very good overseas. We (Forest Row) have a little rivalry with them, due to firey first impressions and last game of the season champion decider.

Ringmer are a good side but the ground isnt my favourite!
I dont like Bells Yew Green apart from a couple.
Not played at st Peters but a few of the guys have and enjoyed it.

To be honest if you enjoy the people you play with then not alot more matters, plenty of clubs near Brighton that play in the Sussex premier league Div 6 which is a league above Div 1 ESCL.

Crowhurst park is a lovely ground played a couple of cup finals there!

If you need more info mate let me know

Alright mate. I am the 1st XI captain for Hellingly CC in the Sussex div 5, located just round the corner from Hailsham.. Same league as crowhurst park. Drop me a message if you want any info

check out Bexhill CC.They are probably going to get relegated from Sussex Prem this season, but will be looking to bounce back next season.

You definitely need to wait until next year before looking, the east, west and Sussex prem are looking to merge into a pyramid table to feed into 3 divisions of the Sussex prem, therefore Sussex prem div 3-6 will merge down etc...so depending on teams rankings a div 3 team could be restructured into div 5 ...and there being more leagues....

Have you not thought about West Sussex league? Plenty of good clubs, our 1XI are about to get promoted into Div 2 (scaynes hill cc, 18 min drive from brighton). But if your looking to play higher, I know several people at Cuckfield (Jeet Ravel, NZ Test opener is playing for them this year), Horsham, Ansty would be my personal advice, all a 15-30 min drive from Brighton.

We have just signed up a Sussex premier player as he fell out with the team, just wants to enjoy his cricket, had one social night with him and he paid for tour the next day.

We have a few irons in the fire to get back 3 Sussex prem players who could finish off their careers with us 😊

Cheers guys. As I say, the plan is to try a few net sessions and make a decision. I may be finishing this season at Firle if I can get registered so can make a decision on the standard then. Will have a look at all the clubs mentioned though. Always helps to know as well if they have leg spinners so I know if I will get a bowl!

I know a couple of guys at Ansty, plus a couple of uni team mates are at Horsham.

I haven't considered West Sussex to be honest, not sure why though.

@Churchy1989 makes a good point. There's a meeting about that tomorrow though!

I will speak to Charlie about that!

My first thought is that Bexhill is a bit far (45/50 mins from where I'm living) but all others are in a reasonable distance. Will be trying to find pics and detail about facilities now.

Well for starters - you clearly can't put the covers in the right place.

Secondly, who wants to bowl to that boundary?!!!

You can catch one ball of me here (Kookaburra fkw) running it through gully... Unfortunately the camera went flat or ran out of data. Got 47* that game, tracked their opening bowler and stuck him over the groundsmans shed. Anyone whose played at Firle knows its a lovely ground, and that the shed is a fair old hit!

Made a decision of sorts.

Ive spoken with a mate who plays at Ansty and apparently they don't have any spinners. Going to have a net with them Thursday evening and see how it goes.

If they're not for me, I will keep looking around and will be in touch with anyone whose suggested their clubs to find when trainings are over winter.

Thanks all for your help!

Nice club always had a good day there, play a good level too! Clubhouse is a bit old now but definitely not the worst around.

Righto. My mate who plays there said they had none, either way from the contact I've had with their skipper so far they don't have a leg spinner which suits me well.

Hailsham are a decent club, got a very very good overseas.

Do Hailsham still play in a park across the road from the social club? Played them in a tour game and hated the ground but very socialable bunch of guys.

Rottingdean was a nice ground from memory and play a decent standard, or did when we played them. Just down the road from Brighton.

Yeah they do with the tenis courts behind, its not a picturesque ground at all but the wicket has always been decent for both

@mohawks94 Looks like you will be playing Div 2 next year for Ansty.

The league is having a massive restructure and merging the East, West, Mid and Sussex Prem into 1 pyramid scheme.

Our 1's will be in Central Div 6 with our games being within a max of 5 miles from our club - no more long drives  ;)

Yeah. Their skipper got in touch last week and they're very keen to get me on board which is nice.

Ive seen some grumbling about the restructuring as Firle are going from ESCL div 2 into div 6 I think.

@mohawks94 not sure why they are complaining - that's the correct league... there were 6 leagues in the Sussex prem and most the 2nd XI teams are poor. that's the whole point of the restructure - to get the poor teams lower and the better teams higher - will take a few years to work its way out.

I can see that view, but Firle are frustrated at being stuck into a division with the likes of East Dean and Friston. They don't like the grounds in the proposed division as much as the one they are in currently.

East Dean & Friston is in the league above  - they should look at getting promoted to play better teams.

They won two consecutive promotions to div 2 and then had a good finish in their first season in that division.

As i play and have played both teams. Ill have my input.

1. East dean is a shithole. That thrive on having a cheating umpire (when no umpires were issued). And have 1 player in chad chisholm. Who quite frankly isnt that good. We played East Dean in the only game he didnt play and beat them. I won the game with a 6 from a slog sweep, frankly their bowling was awful. I didnt feel troubled by their openers at all.

2. As for poor grounds the worst ground in Firle and Forest rows division ia willingdon. Just as bad as east dean and the pavilion is a small shed.

I played at East Dean a couple of years back. Given out run out when I was actually stood in the crease. I'd backed up a bit but was back in the crease before mid off picked it up and underarmed it to the bowler who jokingly took the bails off and said how's that, umpires finger was up quicker than Ben Stokes' red mist! Their skipper told me not to go anywhere and told the ump he was wrong.

Our no.3 was giving LBW gloving it straight back down the wicket to the bowler. The debate went on for atleast 5 minutes maybe even longer and their captain refused to retract the appeal.

When we played them at home the ump triggered me as soon as one hit my pads. I couldn't complain about it though as it hit me below the knee on middle, but he gave it so fast that I reckon I'd have been gone even if it was missing a second set.

I had Haywards Heath CC get in touch last night with a big spiel trying to sell their project to me. I've never spoken to anyone from there so I was quite surprised, only thing I can think of is one of my uni coaches said something.

I wont be going there though, I'm committed to Ansty, been doing some winter coaching and a couple of socials, really nice bunch of lads. They're also in the same division as Haywards Heath, relegated to Sussex div 2 whilst HH were promoted to it so no change in standard.

Having played both teams a fair few times I would say Ansty are your best bet. Hayward’s Heath is a great place to play as a batsmen....but ansty have always been better blokes

I'm looking forward to the challenge at a new level with a nice bunch of lads.

Ansty have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome since I rocked up for a net last summer, have got me involved in socials etc. I see it as a chance to write a new chapter in my career, leave all the baggage of my old club behind me and hopefully push on and have a shot at county cricket. I'm told that Ansty have recruited a Sussex bat for next season, and two of the ladies are on the England elite development set up so a good club all round.

If I do play badly I will no doubt deserve to be dropped!

They are a good club, say hi to Stephen Rustling and Luke Forster if they still play there. Former team mates.
