Title: The world has gone Mad
Post by: SOULMAN1012 on October 19, 2017, 09:43:11 PM
Just seen next seasons GN Legend on sale at PDC for the bargain price of £900 bit of a steal with the 10% discount from the RRP of £1000.
Didn’t you used to be able to get a custom made bat along side the England test captain for that price even that’s mental money to a bloke who must have spent over £5000 on bats over the years

900 quids for a bat that is on sale. I could pay my one month mortgage payment with that kind of money. Complete madness!

Add to it the the fact that the few legends I have seen are nothing extra ordinary in terms of performance. One I saw had 8 grains with a blemish as well, can't imagine how that could be termed as top 1% of the willow.

If you stretch the ceiling price of the top bats you might not sell many but if it allows you to push up the prices in the mid and low mass market range even by a small amount (just because it doesn’t  look as bad still compared to the very best) then you can suddenly make a lot more money.
It’s a ridiculous price for a bat, but I very much doubt it has anything to do with actual costs and way more to do with a very crude and manipulative product pricing strategy.

I wonder how high it will go before it reaches peak gouging?

Prices will continue to rise until people vote with their feet

my worry is that smaller boutique brands will now raise prices as if big boys are getting it they want some of the pie

Is that the time for the boutique brands to really make their mark by not charging over the odds and gaining more customers!? People aren't going to want to pay fortunes for bats and if they do I say more fool them! I'll stick to my butterfly blades they've never let me down yet

The pricings a joke, a complete peetake.
Doesn't matter if it's clever marketing or whatever.

Exactly this.no shame for GN to charge whatever the want, smaller brands...going on the fact raw materials costs have not increased that much...have a better opportunity now than ever before

GN have to recoup money paid in sponsorship somehow-in the UK at least-we have a great choice of where to buy

every big price rise by the big boys has been followed by smaller brands for a long time so can't see this changing

I agree though if they kept prices sensible they could steal customers from the big boys

Knowing the cost of raw clefts  my view is its the big players dominating  market availability.

The cost of wood is just an excuse. It’s actually to cover the pay increases for the pros.
Don’t expect many brands to come out and say we’re increasing prices because mr cook wants more money.

My biggest moan is you'll never make more from something overly priced than you will at something reasonably priced. if they sell 2 £900 bats but sell 10 bats priced at £200. You haven't done a lot more for the extra 8 bats you sold.

I understand the costs of Clefts and the rareness of certain clefts do warrant the higher price for the effort made to find such things but not a £500/700 difference!

As I've tried to say I think the more of the general public will be more inclined to buy something more affordable.

GN currently have 16 SH Legend bats available on their live stock list. There will be more than this sold over the course of the 2018 pricing (September to September) but i would be surprised if it is more than (a very, very conservative estimate) 150 per year, and do remember that the overwhelming majority of bats sold by GN are sold at trade pricing which is well below £1000.

The tiny percentage of Legends sold every year is most definitely not to pay for ever increasing pro contracts. The Legend sells out every year, they have all but said to retailers that they are looking to find a ceiling on what was always supposed to be a very rare and exclusive product.

As much as I agree with most of what is being said, GN are perfectly entitled to continue to up the price on something where the supply has been outstripped by demand every single year since 2012 (and possibly in years before that)

I do feel this year will be the year where they don't sell out.

For the post above which doubts the quality of a Legend, all I can ask is where did they buy it from?

You and many customers we've sold Legends to are of course well within your rights to expect a flawless bat when spending top end money.

As a quick aside none of those cost even close to £1000 though.

You'd think with an item that expensive that PDC would at least bother putting a description with it. One thing that annoys me about their website is the lack of description, appreciate they've got a ton of items to put on there but surely you're only talking a few minutes work copy and pasting off the brands' literature - would make all the difference.

As for the price, unless it's got some Ayrtek-esque technology involved (which I highly doubt!) then the price is simply baffling.

Agree entirely. I can appreciate why Masuri are so expensive, the technology behind both the shell and the grill is way in front of anyone else (Barring Ayrtek, which are different). The R&D must be massive. But as far as I'm aware, there isn't anything special about GN helmets. If I'm honest, I always thought they looked a bit simple... I do like the way the neck guard connects to the helmet though.

That's not really true is it because you've actually done 5 times the work, so expand that to a business the size of GN and that could become 200 x £900 bats and 1,000 x £200 or even 2,000 x £900 bats and 10,000 x £200.

I hear ya. And, I won't pay that much for it when better helmets cost me less. I bought my Ayrtek because it was discounted and I couldn't be happier with the product. My Masuri Vision Series (VS) Elite Titanium Cricket Batting Helmet was discounted on Amazon to USD 199. With Amazon's credit card (new application) discount, I paid USD 131. That's less than half the retail price.

Long and short of it, there are deals out there for amazing products, you just have to plan ahead and not search for gear at the last minute.

Their prices to what people will pay for top end bats, not for what they are logically worth, the same applies to many high end items.

I would love to know what the difference between these gloves and GN's less expensive gloves.

These are made of kangaroo leather, the others are mostly synthetic materials.

That being said, this exact glove was in the range last year with an RRP in the region of £180-£190.
