Title: 2018 IPL Retention & Auction
Post by: Rob580 on January 03, 2018, 05:11:14 PM
With the IPL fast approaching, the franchises are announcing their retained players tomorrow, and the list doing the rounds at the moment of retained players is:

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja (Dwayne Bravo, if fit, may be reserved for the Right to Match list)

Kolkata Knight Riders: Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine

Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner, Deepak Hooda

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli, Yuzvendra Chahal, AB de Villiers

Delhi Daredevils: Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer

Rajasthan Royals: Steve Smith

Kings XI Punjab: There is a high possibility that Punjab might not retain any of their players

I'm guessing Rajasthan (effectively Rising Pune Supergiant) aren't retaining Ben Stokes because of the CPS case, but I'd definitely pick up a cheap Overseas who can become 'injured' should he not be sent to Pentonville.....

Also, I'd be surprised if RCB don't retain Gayle, given he's one of the most marketable players at the moment, as well as the best ever T20 batsman.

Rashid Khan will be retained, jut too risky if he goes back into the auction and they use their right to match card for god knows how much!

Thoughts? Who else do you think will be retained, and who will go for big bucks? I'm thinking Munro will be bought for a decent amount, but not mega bucks (not marketable enough), AJ Tye will be bought for a decent wedge andi've a sneaking suspicion Jos Buttler might well go for some serious money. Not a massive number of Indian Wicketkeepers (who are any good), if he keeps striking them clean in the BBL, could be a few pennies for young Joseph...

Afghanistan have a lot of cricket in the build up to their maiden Test match, maybe Rashid and Nabi won't be available for the entire duration.

I thought CSK and Rajasthan could only retain players from prior to their bans, so RR Can't retain Stokes.

Good to see Malinga and Harbhajan losing their free meal tickets, they've been regressing for a while.

Jos Buttler is essentially only being as a specialist batsman, the times he kept to the spinners he was dreadful. Mumbai may well right to buy Jos and Pollard.

Big dog Andre Russell should go for big cash as well as Mitchell Starc.

Also i knew RCB would retain de Villiers after he said he'll only play for them...Serious bromance for Virat and AB...

Good stuff. I'm really looking forward to seeing each team's tactics with regards to retaining vs Right To Match (RTM).

Think you've got more or less everything there. I think Bhuvi, Bumrah and Kuldeep will be retained by SRH, MI and KKR respectively as opposed to RTM. Do we expect Delhi to retain QdK as well?

Looking forward to seeing what happens with loyal IPL stalwarts such as Pollard, Ashwin and Gayle given the other players that each of their respective teams could retain instead of them.

What about the new kid on the block Jofra? Is he available for the auction, think there could be a few in for him nice little pay packet?

Agree with what's been said about Malinga and Harbajan, brilliant on their day but that day comes around a lot less often than it used to.

Stokes could potentially be a bargain buy at a cut price even of its just for a few games

How can CSK retain players when they haven’t been in the last two editions?

They were temporarily suspended and replaced with Gujarat.

They are allowed to retain the players from Gujarat, as they are replacing them (I think)

I might be miles off and am open to being shouted down if necessary!  :D

Mumbai: Rohit, Bumrah, Hardik

Delhi: Morris, Pant, Iyer

Kolkata: Narine, Russell

Hyderabad: Warner, Bhuvneshwar

Some of the picks are a joke! Andre Russell hasnt played competitive cricket for an year. Do they really expect him to come back and perform well? Sarfaraz Khan...RCB didnt bother playing him earlier and now have retained him. Did they expect others to go crazy about someone who hasnt really set the world on fire? Axar Patel retained by KXIP!! ... :o :o :o

Nice wedge for Virat, just the small sum of $2.68m and $1.7m for AB.

Narine $1.3m and $1.1m for Russell...no wonder they Can't be bothered to play for West Indies

Rishabh Pant $1.1m for the teen ager...when I was 19 i was getting hammered at university...

Title: Re: 2018 IPL Retention & Auction
Post by: Rob580 on January 04, 2018, 03:37:29 PM
He's potentially the next superstar of Indian Cricket, so probably worth retaining him given his potential.

They'll be hoping he becomes synonymous with RCB in the same vein that Rohit is for Mumbai, Kohli with RCB, and Raina & Dhoni for CSK.

Same thinking is behind Rishabh Pant & Shreyas Iyer being retained, albeit they have cost considerably more, given they are already capped.

My thoughts on the retentions:
Mumbai and Hyderabad got it spot on.
Did Bangalore mix up between Chahal and Sarfaraz?
Kolkata could have retained Lynn as well. Narine and Russell are good options. They will use the Right to match for their Indian players.
Delhi - Not sure about Pant but Shreyas and Morris are good options.
Chennai - Dhoni is more of a sentimental pick but Raina might have a point to prove.
Rajasthan - Smith might be burned out by the time IPL starts with the year he has had.
Punjab - Axar is a good player but don't think he would have gone for that money in the bidding. Best to have started from a clean slate.

Few players who have over hiked their asking prices:

$315k - Mitch Johnson, White, Morgan, Wiley
$235k - harry gurney, jason roy, Bopara, Ali, Finn, Lyon

I had to check my eyes about 3-4 times when I saw Harry Gurney's name in the Cricinfo article last night.

What does everything think will happen with Root? I'd like to see him get some experience out there, but he hasn't got much of a T20 record to fall back on, but it's still Joe Root. Several better T20 players will be available for less.

Not much of a T20 record to fall back on??

He averages 40 in international T20’s at a strike rate of over 125.....

He'll probably get picked and sit in the dugout until he gets a game batting at 6 again.

Hope him and hales get a fair crack of the whip to show what they can do. Better value than some of the overseas who were picked up and played most of the games last season

If you’re a poor player of spin you ain’t getting much of a look in. Neither Roy or Hales are capable against proper high class spin. Going further even Guptill struggled to get many games due to the same weakness

Think it's more the number of T20s that Root actually plays in.  He's the same age as Williamson and a year younger than Smith, yet Williamson has played over twice as many T20s as Root and Smith has played nearly 3 times as many.

Root has got everything going for him. Overseas players in the IPL are also about how marketable they are. And Roots the England Captain. He has a good T20 average and importantly is a great player of spin. Unlike Roy and Hales who have missed out before due to this reason. The other thing in Roots favour is he has started his price at 1.5 crore below a lot of others.

This was the point I was trying to get across. What will help him though is that almost 40% of his (only) 25 T20I's were played in India.

Interesting exercise, out of the marquee players who would be your top 3 picks.
Ben Stokes, Mitchell Starc, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Yuvraj Singh, R Ashwin, Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan, Glenn Maxwell, Ajinkya Rahane, Harbhajan Singh, Joe Root, Shakib Al Hasan, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo and Kane Williamson.

My top 3:
1. D. Bravo
2. M. Starc
3. B. Stokes

I think it's going to be a really interesting auction.

With CSK and RR back and there are lots of interesting RTM's floating around for the teams to possibly use.

Some random pricing and some very good unknowns coming through has meant bargins out there. Eg. Munro is only 50 lakhs

Add to that for the 1st time they are mixing in the uncapped players on the 1st day so the teams are going to know alot better where there squad is at early doors.

Yep it is the players who set it. The choose a price out of the following levels - min 50 lakh, 75, 1 core, 1.5, max 2 core.

Then the player is put into a category of either marquee, batsman, allrounder, wk, spinner or fast bowler.

Then they are either capped or uncapped and also overseas.

Everyone goes into the auction in blocks of 8-10 in their respective categories no matter what base price they are.

I'm surprised more don't set their base price low.

50 lakh (the minimum base price for an overseas) is £56k. I'd settle for that for 6 weeks work, which would likely involve rubbing shoulders with the great and the good, having nets, mixing drinks and warming the bench!

Absolutely , the ECB seems to have a different attitude  to the IPL now rather than the problems with KP over it..actually you could say Pieterson paved the way a bit to let players play in it

Providing it hasn't changed they don't get to keep the full amount as they have to compensate their county.  I remember a few years ago Rikki Clarke got ridiculed because of his high base price but he said he had to set it that high as otherwise he would be losing money from it.

Special mention for David Miller (who scored a scorching 80 runs in 5 games last year) who gets 580k!

And Pandey, who averages 27 with the bat, gets 2 million.

Well they do have a big following in India, with the jersey sales and brand recognition the value adds up.

It's really interesting watching who bids on who - the auctions on Sky Channel 809. There is some serious cricketers in that room - Ponting, Kallis, Fleming, Vettori, Sehwag etc...

There is a lot of tactical bidding which can drive up random players prices and also various types of players can be worth inflated prices e.g.. Indian keepers. This due to no one wants to use an overseas in that position so they become a very sort after player.

Also recent form and IPL history can make a player e.g. Bravo and Pollard because the owners have happy memories of them. And recent eye catching form obviously helps.

I think Root didn't get sold because he was up early doors and all the teams wanted to wait and see what happens etc... he has a good chance of being brought back.

He's still west indian - 2 years of earning big money playing t20 cricket. Do you actually think he'd play test match cricket?? I highly doubt it.
I see him following the route of the other west indian players and playing only the shorter formats to avoid injury. I only see him playing white ball cricket for england

If Archer gets a PSL gig then he's going to have to make an early decision. IPL, BBL, PSL, BPL, CPL and he somehow has to spend 210 days in the UK to keep up his qualification hopes. Reason suggests he'll follow the money and no-one would blame him.

I’ve met him at Sussex before and he’s a lovely bloke and seems quite grounded so I doubt the money is going to change his mind

Is there any chance, even a smidgen, that we could rush Archer through qualification? He could be the answer to our prayers!
If the ECB decided so, he could be in the team next week - has a British passport. No chance are they going to change their qualification rules though.

Seems like a lot of big names went unsold.

I wonder if there will ever be a competition where all the worlds best players can play and there is no 'pro' cap like the IPL, BBL etc. I think it would be interesting to have say and 8 team completion which contain a mixture of the words best in each XI.

Does seem a really strange rule! The guy is British, any other sport and he would be in the relevant squad for it... Why did the ECB decide a rule that potentially weakens it?

Because if the England XI was made up of overseas players who have qualified in no time then there would be public outcry and the team would have no credibility. They have the rules to promote fairness I'd imagine

How do you differentiate between someone like Archer - who is genuinely British by birth - and AN Other South African from the mid 00s who is British by dint of his grandfather having been born here?

Archer was born in Barbados.

He will have to wait as others have who were not born here to qualify. Have I missed something in this discussion(it wouldn't be the first time!)

Its not about where you were born, oddly.  Renshaw - or perhaps Sam Whiteman is a better example - would have to qualify, as the key is permanent residence.  The issue is, too many tenuously connected South Africans have led to a situation where someone born with a British parent is no longer able to play without qualification.

The biggest obstacle for Archer is that he's played for West Indies U19s, otherwise he wouldn't be subject to the same qualification period I believe.

Nope it is the ECB 7 year ruling.
It is three years for all other sports and could be for Archer in cricket. But it isn't.

I worry he will become the next Graeme Hick.

Wouldn't be surprised if Archer decided he wants to play for the West Indies considering the amount of cash he can obtain from the t20 circus. He could easily do what Narine does, play a handful of t20s for WI, and earn millions from various franchises

Surprised Amla was overlooked. He was quite sensational last term.

I think it's even more apparent now that being the best in the world doesn't even guarantee you to be picked in the IPL. It all comes down to your T20 skills and form, not your test rankings.

Amla averages 34 with a s/r of 130 in t20, so he's not exactly a stiff. But it seems to biffer are more that flavour for the 2018 ipl

Interesting you say that other sports is 3 years as I had seen a conversation between Luke Wright and people  on twitter and when questioned about Archer he said 3 years. Maybe they are pushing for it to be changed?

It is one of the gerat ruiners of international rugby - you have, especially, Ireland going over to South Africa and recruiting project players to bolster their national side.  I want Archer to play for England as much as anyone - but I can see why the rules are as they are.
