He's still west indian - 2 years of earning big money playing t20 cricket. Do you actually think he'd play test match cricket?? I highly doubt it.
I see him following the route of the other west indian players and playing only the shorter formats to avoid injury. I only see him playing white ball cricket for england

If Archer gets a PSL gig then he's going to have to make an early decision. IPL, BBL, PSL, BPL, CPL and he somehow has to spend 210 days in the UK to keep up his qualification hopes. Reason suggests he'll follow the money and no-one would blame him.

If anyone had watched any interviews with him they would see that he seems genuinely keen to play for England
I’ve met him at Sussex before and he’s a lovely bloke and seems quite grounded so I doubt the money is going to change his mind

If the ECB decided so, he could be in the team next week - has a British passport. No chance are they going to change their qualification rules though.

Seems like a lot of big names went unsold.

I wonder if there will ever be a competition where all the worlds best players can play and there is no 'pro' cap like the IPL, BBL etc. I think it would be interesting to have say and 8 team completion which contain a mixture of the words best in each XI.

Does seem a really strange rule! The guy is British, any other sport and he would be in the relevant squad for it... Why did the ECB decide a rule that potentially weakens it?

Because if the England XI was made up of overseas players who have qualified in no time then there would be public outcry and the team would have no credibility. They have the rules to promote fairness I'd imagine

How do you differentiate between someone like Archer - who is genuinely British by birth - and AN Other South African from the mid 00s who is British by dint of his grandfather having been born here?

Archer was born in Barbados.

He will have to wait as others have who were not born here to qualify. Have I missed something in this discussion(it wouldn't be the first time!)

Its not about where you were born, oddly.  Renshaw - or perhaps Sam Whiteman is a better example - would have to qualify, as the key is permanent residence.  The issue is, too many tenuously connected South Africans have led to a situation where someone born with a British parent is no longer able to play without qualification.
