ok - this question kind of relates to how much would you spend on a thigh pad set. The new Aero Strippers are about £50, the buchanan set with Hawk is about £65, the Remfry set is (with current exchange rates) in the region of £100. The top of the range kookaburra set are about £30 - but then the Kookaburra (and most other) pro's use Remfry
The Ace thigh pads are, I have now found out somewhere in between the Buchanan and Remfry in price. They do look pretty good - and are custom made, but would you spend the money?
Up until now I have been using the original Obo strippers, but after 3 seasons mine are fit for the bin. I have bought a cheap Kookaburra pair for nets and pre-season practice and have found them more comfortable than my OBO set. so am thinking of returning to the old school inner and outer thigh pad combo.
If i didn't go for this, what should I go for? Personally I think more than £50 is a bit punchy.

I had and sold the Buchanan set as they were nice enough pads but I so rarely use them it was a waste of coffin space, kept a bog standard Newbery thigh pad but would rate Aero as the most comfortable and best option.

Not a fan of obo/strippers although i did use them for 2 years i found them bulky i have got a set of buchannans coming i have used them before there good i also have a ace feet in motion which is to be fair as good as i have seen i have desided on getting a pair of REMFRY to top my kit off for the season

Thanks - I think I will probably go with the buchannans - I don't have to face too many 85+ mph bowlers (!) so don't see the point is spending the extra £30!
Having gone back to the old school thigh pad set, I am not sure I will go back to the Obo's - as good as they are.

Further to the above, the time is now right for me to expand in a bit more detail about my quest for a thigh pad...
I have been surfing this forum since January and I have see an understandable fetish with bats of all shapes and sizes, I have also witnessed various fetishes with “top hats” on people’s mum’s and dad’s.
Fortunately I managed to source a majestic weapon from Norbs (rebranded as SAF bats now I see), this machine gun of a bat caused chaos in the nets last night, which has meant that my kit concerns moved to my thigh pad. I have no idea why. Have I really lost sleep over an effing thigh pad? – well no that will be Baby Viv’s fault.
During the past 3 seasons I have been using (with some success) the OBO strippers (the forerunner to the Aero model) and as good as they are, to be honest I have got bored with searching for the hip protector in various parts of my kit bag just before I am due to bat and the fact that they are pretty bulky.
Instead I have embarked on a mission to find a replacement, actually it turns out at some expense so we better keep this between us and not mention my troubles to the long suffering Mrs Buzz. My self-imposed mission was to find a value for money thigh pad set (inner and outer) that was the right size for someone who is 6’ft 1, comfortable and that wouldn’t get in the way of my trademarked moo over cow corner. So far I have expended enough capital that I could have bought a custom made “ACE Feet in Motion” set – without buying one, what a muppet.
So that none of you make the same mistakes as I do, I thought I would publish my findings. I have used links to serious cricket because of the pictures, I am not attempting to endorse them. I looked at various different options in shops and online and have come up with the below... feel free to disagree!
1. If you want a cheap set of light weight thigh pads that are pretty protective (but probably will not last forever) The Kookaburra Ice set is pretty good (see http://www.seriouscricket.co.uk/shop/section.php/232/0 for an example) the main thigh pad is about 40 cm (ideal for someone 5ft10-6ft) and could do with being shaped a bit better but that should come with wear. I have worn a couple of bowling machine balls during the last few weeks and the protection is excellent. For about £20+postage – you get value for money.
2. The new Aero strippers look much better designed than the old ones and I expect them to be excellent – they will have their devotees, for about 45+postage, I am sure they will be good value http://www.seriouscricket.co.uk/shop/product.php/1105/361/
3. Ace/Buchanan thigh pads are at the higher end price wise (£85 or £65 + post respectively) I am sure these will be excellent. The Remfry ones are more expensive, but most test players use them for their whole career – that suggests that they are value for money. Matt Prior uses the ACE version, not sure what other pro's go for them.

4. There are other types of thigh pad such as the shark one I have on sale here (sorry for the plug - http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=4528.0) my view is that this type of thigh pad will do a job for a lower level player and represents decent value because they will last longer than that Ice set as above for a similar price – but I wouldn’t choose to use them. Mainly because they are 40 cm and too small for my slightly lanky frame.
5. In the end I called up hawk to ask them about the Buchanan set (http://www.hawkcricket.com/ProtectiveWear.cfm) and ended up buying the Hawk X-Pro thigh pad and inner (http://www.hawkcricket.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=45&category=14) which although they are 5mm thicker at 15mm offer excellent protection and value for money. By phoning them up to discuss the purchase, it turns out that they do the X-Pro in 46cm, 43cm and 40cm. After getting the tape measure out I went for the 43cm – so the 46cm ones will be great for someone who is 6ft 3+. The fit on me is excellent, they are very light weight, well made and again after wearing a few (not deliberately) on the bowling machine I am very happy with them. (£38+post)

As an aside - it seems that a few of the pro's are using the G and M Original LE set - these look pretty good, although I haven't tried them on.
So the moral of the story is... I don’t care that Wisden says the Bradbury one is better, it is wrong – these guys know nothing – as is obvious from some of the selections that they made. I would also say that you look a complete t**t wearing a three piece suit and a thigh pad set.
In case any of you were wondering, Baby Viv’s liked them enough not to throw his formula over them - a real bonus - my suit wasn't so lucky!
I can’t believe I have wasted so much of my life on an effing thigh pad, hopefully I will be able to sleep now.

Buzz - I admire your enthusiasm for the lowly old thigh pad, a much maligned and over looked piece of kit - keep fighting the good fight - i'll never look at one without thinking some poor sod wrote a whole page about these :D

My lunatic research into thighpads has continued...!!
RS have just released the below effort (available for about £17) posted from Richard at Quantum cricket. The thigh pad is 40cm high (total top to bottom) and 21cm wide not counting the curve (the radius with the curve will be a bit bigger). These are a new 2011 model just in and very high protection grade. I am not sure how thick they are, I expect around 25mm.

I think they look good - 40 cm is ideal for 5ft8-6ft. I have enquired about a larger size, but these need to be ordered in from India so there is a bit of a wait

God save me, I have bought a new set of Hawk thigh pads... these are slightly wider and a marginally different shape for the main pad and the inner in much more like the remfry thigh pad in looks, which may have been a weakness in the previous model.
Price wise they were about £44 posted
In comparison to the older Hawk thigh pads they are slightly thicker (which is a shame) but are really light and comfortable. Sorry for the huge photo's!

Remfry are the best by a big distance but not worth there money even though i have them.
You can buy good thigh protection for under 10 pound i would recommend that unless you like your bespoke kit
Hawk stuff these and there the older buchannan sets are rated up there and there not much difference in the 3 only the price
Asad sells a bas one for a tenner i think which i have used and found as good as any thigh pad

I'd definitiely stick with Aero for thigh pads. The P2's are perfectly adequate protection. Having said that, I get hit on the thigh about once a season!
I looked at the P1s and they seemed to obviously have a touch more dense protection but I thought I'd never need it and the P2s felt a tad less bulky. I immediately removed the hip protector as it seemed a waste of time and uncomfortable. I was impressed that they came in all sorts of sizes. They're the first set of thigh pads I've had which dont slide around/come out (like kook padman things) and dont rub/become clammy.
Well worth the money I reckon.

Several brands have brought out thinner thigh pads - with various different levels of success.
I have a set of the new GM Original LE ones to test and will post pics and a review once they have been tested. If anyone else has any other thoughts please add them in here.
Yes we know people like the aero protection - it is very good - but has anyone seen anything else innovative in this area?

and Dan in answer to your question, I think they are all much of a muchness, go with the ones which fit you better. I find the protection doesn't sit in the right place with the shorts and that they aren't that comfortable, but I am grumpy with most things thigh pad at the moment, just ask Canners!!

The best batsman to ever play for my club uses a cushion with some ties sewn on as a thigh guard, I bet that made you foam at the mouth buzz lol

Buzz mate, I know Remfry's are quite expensive but they are absolutely worth each and every single penny.
Had decided to go for one as mate was getting them so took advantage of shipping so got them today and believe me they are amazing, haven't seen any better thigh guard than this so far.

I tried big brands (Kookaburra, GM, GN etc etc) thigh guards and they were too bulky and at times it won't mould well!
My first impression with Remfrys is that they mould extremely well on your thighs, haven't tested them out in terms of protection but the comfort level is good. Then secondly some of the thigh pads (out leg) would touch top hat of pad etc and cause problems while this was totally fine.

glad you like them. to be honest I am really happy with the new gm le set. they are very very light and well shaped. good protection too. and not £130... ! the gm ones are a significant improvement on previous models in my view.

The Stig doesn't use thigh pads! He just uses his bat

The stig only uses pads, gloves, helmet, thigh pads and box when the cameras are running!
When they are turned off, he sheds all items of protection, grabs a middling bat, gives the sign to up the speed on the bowling machine to the max, and then destroys the nets with his batting! It's a joy to watch!! :o
The only reason he wears all that in front of the camera is for health and safety reasons! Plus he realises some colts may watch so has been told to ensure he sets an example! He even misses the odd shot or two especially for the camera so that anyone watching doesn't get a complex!!

And I have used the Remfrys and I have used the GM thigh pads which Buzz has.
I know this is a bold statement, and I absolutely would have kept the Remfrys had they been a little longer for my oversized frame! But I would absolutely say that the GM thigh pads are on the same level as the Remfrys IMO! They are light, strong and comfortable and extremely protective! I felt the Remfrys were slightly stronger but unless I am facing 90-100mph balls then this won't apply to me! And if I were facing that pace then I wouldn't be around for longer than 1 or 2 bals anyway!!
Ful marks to GM for taking the time to design these! I'm a fan!

Funny you should mention that fella! I can't remember a lot before the nets and feel more of a love towards my family! The first memory I have is someone removing sunglasses and walking out of the nets!! Strange!

The problem and concern I had with GM ones was they were very thick, however, you got yourself tad thinner ones. Not sure how but I'm sure with the thinner ones they would be as good as Remfrys, for me the set I wore was extremely thick.

the new ones are only 10-12 mm thick, the same as mine, they are about half the thickness of last seasons models.

I tried 2011 LE ones and I didn't measure the thickness but they were quite thicker compared to Remfrys.
I will someday ask you how you got custom made GM LE ones :D

I'm tempted to get one myself based on buzz's comments and sell my large p2 strippers on here as they do take up quite a lot of room in a bag.

Ah I thought they were this years model (I know you had some über fancy custom ones as well), any ideas what the differences are between this years and last years models?

I haven't used them yet, although the shape and fit is great. They are slightly thicker than the GM ones in the picture. The branding is nice and subtle, which is always great - the green straps are a little too kookaburra for me, but that isn't a reason not to like them!
From my initial ideal thigh pad design the only thing that isn't perfect is that the velcro strap on the top of the outer thigh pad ideally would be at a slight angle to help the strap fit.
But all in a really nice bit of kit and super comfortable with it.
The cut off top of the outer thigh pad allows a good range of movement, especially when on the sweep or leaning into a wider drive... Johnnyw well done :)

PS: You have been using your custom GM thigh pads in season so far? If so serving better than Hawk or others you have used?

Firstly the only thigh pads I have currently are in the photo above, all the others have been sold or passed on.
I have been using the GM original set in the nets so far (but haven't played a game in them yet) they are great.
the upside of the shamrock ones is that they do fit better the downside is that the are marginally thicker... both sets are good.
In comparison to the Hawk ones - the original hawk ones that I had in the very first post were, in my view better than the second Hawk set I got, both in terms of fit and performance. As you can see I have had to adjust the GM ones with extra velcro to help them fit better, but that is not a bit deal. I hold out high hopes for the shamrock ones. These are the large mens option.

Got my set of shamrocks through today and are as good as any I've used great protection it seems and lovely fit but agree strap could be at an angle but small small thing

I've got a pair of these Shamrock thigh guards........probably version 1.0 looking at Buzz's pair which look like v2.0 but they are the best thigh guards I have had and I've been through a few! Nice and big, very comfortable, the fitting is nice and tight, especially on the inner guard which is just how I like it and the protection is perfect. I've been using them a while and have worn quite a few at decent speed on them whilst practicing the 'Cook nudge' off my hip in the nets, luckily I've never felt a thing...

Am I alone in not wearing a thigh pad? At my club I think I'm the only guy who doesn't wear one. I honestly don't like wearing them and would rather wear the bruise.

I was just curious to know more about them as I just read about them in one of thread in 'Items Wanted' section.
I simply love the Remfry's, they are absolutely best ever in my opinion. However, since I have practised indoor couple of times in past few weeks, I used my Aero Strippers as I wanted to preserve my Remfry's although they last for ages but I don't like them as much as Remfry.

One thing I would like to add about Remfry's is that the end of the straps is not sewed or 'locked up' so the thread comes off so you have to cut it with use of scissor, if you pull it more of it will come off. So I got the end sewed by my mom, if anyone is interested I could share the pictures with you.

ace Feet in Motion are a poor mans Remfry.
THey are simply too thick and the terry towling is too bulky.
Out of the two i have had in the past if i did not buy remfry i would not buy ace i would buy a top of the range of one of the bigger brands.
Bar the nice white straps i do not seen the advantages of ACE bar the price in relation to Remfry

I agree with Procricket - either buy a new set of aero stripers or some top of the range thigh pads from GM or Kook or anyone else - most i think are made in the same place anyway.

i used to use Obo as well i cut the hip protector out they asted me 2 years they were very good if not a bit bulky.
I like the remfry because after a while they feel part of you because there so thin and having used mine for 3 years now there in still great nick i even put mine in the washing machine and they came out looking new.
The feet in motion were bulkier and i have no doubt offer the same protection (i used the thigh guards for around 3 months) but found them to be like other thigh pads and very bulky and cumbersome.
It really depends what you like i'am the kind who likes small yet tightly fitted pads and gloves including thigh pads and i like them as thin as i can get them.
If you do not mind a little bit of bulk then the ace are fine but there not that much into it.
I know i go into a bit sorry but to me protection is a very big thing you do not want to spend a day at Airedale if they do not work

Yes and the fact the guy makes them in his shed behind his house i'am led to believe.
Yes they are different material than anything i have used before there made out of surgical type stuff and there thin as you can get and they weight is nothing.
I love mine i should at the price would i buy them again NO....
Because there very very good but i know through using other thigh pads (Asad does a bas one for a tenner or did) that the protection can be offered for a fraction of the cost.
In saying that they are special and i have never felt a ball through my thigh pad since i have used them and there made to measure and when your not the tallest there great to fit.

Mate, how did you put them in washing machine? Don't they get damaged in washing machine due to them being stiff and having a shape?

these offer double the protection at less than the weight of the nearest cometitors - remfry or aero !!

you can also have a bispoke order...
Finally they are theromoset so you can wrap them around your body and can go in the washing machine.

As read in the AOC magazine , The original intention was to create protection against 9mm projectile for undercover police and then evolved into cricket protection sans being bullet proof. The outer side is all velcro and the inner side has a sweat management materials. They are less than a centimetre thick and malleable.

I think this has tempted few of us, few are considering buying them. I think it would be good if we collect our orders and then submit to them. Who knows they might give slight discount if there are couple pairs being ordered...

As far as I know, Roco's are the standard large mens size. Mine are standard mens inner and a custom outer in between the large and standard mens size. They do two shapes to, the standard UK style and the more asian style like the bas ones

Buzz , I have you seen those Gary's hockey shin guards, the white ones with a blue foam lining, I think it might be the same stuff, I often though it would make excellent stuff for thigh guards.

Mine came at 845 last night
Very light and stiff to start with felt very restrictive due to stiffness but was told by maker to go nuts and bend them to shape my leg as come straight so did that and 100% better feel really comfy now but only test is a net which I will try to do soon
The protection is very good and feel very well made and coverage due to wrap around design as seem to give extra 2 inches protection round leg without feeling restrictive (after bending) with pad on there is no to minimal leg exposed (only groin and butt) so total protection
Only down side is straps are small for my ample frame but George sending some men's size ones along

weight wise I would say they are similar - with the SF's marginally heavier but also bigger and they are about the same thickness - less than 10mm. But with the mallet test the difference is noticable - the gm's fair ok when you hit them in the middle, but any edge hit and you are giving yourself a dead leg. with the SF's they offer all over protection (from mallets and cricket balls ;))
In terms of fit, I really need to spend some time adjusting the SF ones to fit better as at the moment they are a little constricted from being in the box they were posted in! Obviously the GM ones have been worn for a year so are worn in. I have had to add some extra velcro to the GM ones to help them fit - but with the SF pads you can attached both ends of the straps where ever you want to get the best, most comfortable fit possible.
I will have to defer to Roco for his review in the nets due to me not able to bat until February with my sore achilles :(
In the next day or so. But many thanks to George for sending them to me in such short order (custom made thigh pads in under a week). He has also offered to make the stig a very special arm guard so - so watch out for that... ;)

yes - one strap around your waist and one for each of your thigh's.
with nice subtle StrettonFox branding. They are doing custom ones in various colours apparently too.
The velcro material on the outside of the pad have been custom designed for the pads. Always good to have another UK manufacturer.

Get them used mate...no point in having top end protection if your going to leave it in your bedroom and get bruises using a lesser product!

If you don't mind, could you edit the title of that thread to; 'The Sretton Fox Thigh Pads Thread'? Albeit I know they are not only for thigh guards, but if I'm not mistaken thats what there majority of revenue/recognition is for. It would increase forum exposure along Stretton Fox especially when one would google them, apart from there facebook page there is no place where one can read reviews about them.

Mine have never slipped down. The strapping around the pads is really good so fits comfortable in small of your back and keeps it secure

These arrived the other day.....
They're a lot better than I was expecting, very comfortable, the inner thigh guard is nicely shaped and they seem to be fairly well made. Not Aero standards but not too far off. The padding is very, very light so I'm not too sure how protective they will be but I have hit them a few times with a mallet and emerged unscathed so they should be ok. Not 100% sure they will usurp my old P2's which are held together with baling twine quite yet but for £12 it's hardly a costly error! Overall I'm quite impressed. Definitely better than the offerings I have seen from a lot of 'big' companies but probably definitely not as good as Aero and obviously nowhere near Stretton Fox standards...
Just thought I would stick them up for people to see....for £12 I think they're pretty decent value.

It's not massive! The inner is quite big though so that accounts a little for how they look in the pics! If you're over 6ft I would give these a miss but for the shorter chaps amongst us these might do a decent job. As I said, I haven't really tested them yet. They are amazingly light, loads lighter than the Aero's but I don't know if that's because they have skimped on the padding or because the padding they have used (x-lite) is actually a very impressive substance!

These look ok for the money. I've just sold an old pair of p2 strippers as I thought I'd switch to my shamrock thigh pads this year. May have been a tad rash as the inner thigh pad keeps slipping down too much in nets so I might end up buying some of these or some new strippers.
Has anyone tried the new kookaburra all in one thigh pads?

I spoke to Jake at Vitas about the Kook thigh guard set and he reckoned that they were good but not brilliant. No hip protection for a start! I hadn't noticed until I spoke to him about it...

Good point, I hadn't spotted that either. I think I'll play around with the ones I have to make them fit better but if I can't then it looks like I'll be going back to a new set of strippers as I can't justify buying some Stretton foxes.

I actually customised my old P2's. I didn't like the inner guard so I got an Adidas one I liked and cut it down a tiny bit and sewed that into the pouch instead of the standard Aero one....it's a bit bigger but fits better. It's easy enough to do...with my sewing skills it only took about 5 mins....I have re-done it about 4 times though... :D

I looked at a pair yesterday and they seemed very flat, and I wasn't sure if with a bit of persuasion they couldn't be curved a bit more? Not a huge amount needed, but a bit more of a bend would suit me better and be less bulky/stick out less under the trousers so not get in the way so much.
Any advice appreciated, from those that have them, or stockists that don't mind giving a pair a bend!
P.S. I know Stretton Fox are mouldable, and I thought i'd made my mind up to buy some, but can't justify the money.

I just go for the traditional outer and inner thigh pads, at the moment i have the kookaburra 900 outer and the adidas pro inner and they both give great protection and are both very light, you don't realise when you git hit so thats all i need, something that works.

I've had a long day of first trailing round ikea and then building the stuff we've bought. Managed to get a few minutes in sports direct and saw these for £13. Very tempted but I didn't buy them in case they weren't much good, especially as I'm 6'3 and you thought they might be better for shorter people.
Just thinking of getting another set of all in one thigh pads as I'm struggling to get my inner thigh pad to stay in place in nets and I'm regretting selling my aero p2's.

Well I use remfry I like mine and to be honest there 2 very different products and the prices are slightly different.
Remfry in my eyes are lighter and the pair of Stretton I saw where bulkier by a touch over my remfry.
Build quality of the Stretton are the best I had seen the remfry are shall we say homemade looking a look I may add I like.
I'am a top gear man if you want the best yes there both worth it.
There are cheaper alternatives for sure dependant on your budget.
Fancy dan products both to be honest at our levels but great kit

Gray Nicolls are much bulkier, and the kooka ones don't have hip protection.

I have used Aero strippers since they first came out nearly 10 years ago - oh god I'm getting old.
Anyway, my v6.0 P2s had finally come to an end after the last season and I wanted to get some new thigh pads. When I went into our local store they had the new Kookaburra Pro Guard Players model in my size and didn't have any P2s on hand. Anyway (in a move I now really regret), I bought the Kookaburra ones.
After a season of wear, I thought I'd jump on here and post a review of the Kookaburra Pro Guard Players Stripper thigh pads (more as a warning than anything else).
First off, I was pretty pleased with the Kookaburra Stripper. It felt comfortable when I tried it on in the store.
But pretty soon issues cropped up.
It has no hip protector. Apparently you can buy one separately but my retailer had no idea how to get hold of it. I went on their FB page and they claimed that it had been deemed unnecessary by their sponsored players because it got in the way (which didn't ring true to me as my Stripper hip pad had never got in my way). Sure enough, I got hit there in my second pre-season training and it hurt like hell. Luckily I still had my old P2s so I got the hip pad off that and with cunning use of velcro managed to get it to attach to my Kookaburras. Problem solved!
The next issue was the way it fit me as the season went on. I decided I didn't want any mid-season injuries this year so I worked really hard on my fitness in the pre-season and dropped a few kilos - especially around the stomach/waist. When I went to adjust the waist sizing of the Kookaburra and at the same time making sure that the rear thigh pad stayed in place, I found it nearly impossible to achieve. There is a truckload of Velcro involved and the Kookaburra Stripper just didn't handle my new trimmer waistline (which at 32" shouldn't be a problem). Anyway, my wife sewed a kink into the waist strap and it ended up fitting me better (but still not 100% comfortably). Problem kind of solved.
The final and most important issue/warning relates to the shape of the thigh pads. Out of the box, the thigh pads moulded nicely to my thighs. However, within a month or so the front pad started to flatten out quite a lot. I didn't notice it until I got pinned one day and it hurt like hell! I ended up with the most horrendous bruising about 5cm in from the edge of the front thigh pad. When I looked later at the problem I noticed that the thigh pad had flattened out and a gap had appeared between it and my leg. I tried to get some feedback from Kookaburra about this problem and whether I could fix it, and heard nothing. I went to Aero and told them I was having this issue with their strippers and they helpfully gave me some instructions about reshaping the thigh pads. I tried this and it worked for a few weeks and then over time the thigh pad flattened out again. I had to do this about 5 times throughout the season just to keep the Kookaburra stripper thigh pads in working order. Frustrating!!! Problem not solved.
I've got fed up with the Kookaburra Pro Guard Players stripper thigh pads. The product doesn't fit me properly around the waist, didn't protect my hip and the thigh pads don't offer the protection that I need without constant fixing. Also, the way the Velcro has been set up has also shredded a lot of the other material in the waistband area.
A thigh pad should be "set and forget" and its the last piece of kit I want to worry about. My batting is crap enough as it is. I'm quite disappointed by my Kookaburra thigh pad experience. I love their bats and of course their balls set the gold standard, but I feel like they have just tried to copy Aero and have done a poor job of it.
Incidentally, Aero's strippers are much easier to adjust the waist band set up - I think it has something to do with the fact that you can adjust the fit in two places.
I caught a sneak preview of the new Grey-Nicolls Stripper thigh pads a week or so back. I was amazed at how light it was but when I tried it on, it was really uncomfortable (weirdly huge hip pad and much smaller thigh pad) and also I think they have sacrificed protection for weight. I reckon they will offer zero protection to an adult. Probably fine for 9-11 year olds.
Next season I will be back in the market for Aero Strippers - I wish I had stuck with them instead of experimenting with Kookaburra. Does anyone know if Aero are going to release a new version soon? The v6 has been around for a few years now.

Sorry mate. I can't say. We haven't finished the development yet. What I can say is that we don't change the version number for no reason (we have tweaked v6 every year but these updates weren't important enough to warrant a model change) - the changes will be pretty major and should hopefully make a great product even better to use and offer improved protection. I'll try and post more on here when we can.

What's the biggest problem that forum members have with any thigh pad? Putting it another way, a lot of the postings in this thread describe how good (or bad) a particular brand of thigh pad feels when you wear it, but what is it about that thigh pad that makes it feel that way?

Well for me I love the strippers because off how the protection for weight ratio! They are very comfortable and I like the idea of being able to wash the white lining in which the padding goes in. Also for the price you cant complain considering the likes off Remfry are a lot more. Ive already pm'd you and improvement so I wont bother putting that on here ;)

I like my P2s there just falling to bits after I got the earlier this year which is disappointing. The build quality for mine is far from great.

Well the light weight design mate, and another thing that makes them comfortable is how they move with you whilst your running, due to the slots allowing the inner and outter pad to move !

with a thigh pad the fit is key and you don't want them move when you run between the wickets or to be constantly rearranging them when you are about to fave the ball.
protection is also a given.
with the original p1's I found them quite bulky, but as far as I am aware they are better now.
none of that is rocket science.
having them last is possible another issue with most thigh pads, but the aero ones are ok too.
if you could improve the protection while making the padding thinner you would be onto a winner...

What's been the problem?
The velcro on the thigh pad straps has fallen off, twice. The inner thigh pad is starting to come off where it attaches to the waistband.

We have occasionally had a problem with the inner thigh pad loosening near the waistband. You should fix that with a bit of stitching to stop the loosening continuing.
The velcro coming off the thigh pad straps is a new one on me. Could you send me some pictures of the problem - philip@aerocricket.com?

I agree although we have found that it depends where the person wears their inner thigh pad. If it is further inside the leg then this area seems to come under much less stress. If the thigh pad is more out onto the middle of the thigh then this area is put under a great deal of strain. Can you send me a picture of the stitching area as well please?

I agree with Buzz that fit is the #1 issue with thigh pads. As other forum members can see from my review of the Kookaburra Pro Guard the fact that the thigh pads did not fit even after persistent attempts to fix them was the most annoying aspect of that product. As for cost I think that's related to durability. If it going to last for 3-4 seasons like my last set of P2s did, then a higher cost is fine. If they are going to last less than one season like the Kookaburra Pro Guard did then there is no way that represented value for money.

Look at strippers they started I say they used to sit on there own as just under the real elite of thigh pads and in a price range to sit in every level.
But with all the other brands bringing real strippers out and I know a few people who like the slazenger and gn variants and have bought them and some found them better than strippers some didnt
Look at the elite thigh pads stretton now rival and in some eyes better remfry with ace slightly behind.
Yes individual thigh pads have always been around but strippers rival I guess where the pad man shorts but now there cheaper alternatives.
Some Indian brands thigh pads are massively underrated especially the 3 strap just-bas variants I have seen
As I said never has there been the choice in a crowded market

The v6 P1 is a lot less bulky than the previous versions. Have you tried it? Do you need P1 protection? Also, and not wanting to put words in your mouth, is fit the number 1 factor for you?

so I paid about £100 plus a bit and got all five as for me they are equally important. there is no point in an ill fitting super protective set and equally there is no.point in a perfect fit that doesn't protect you.
personally I tink the aero prices are about right.

Well to summarise my Kookaburra Pro Guard experience - the fit was awful, manoeuvrability was fine, protection was no good, weight was okay and they were not durable at all because they lasted only one season.

I've been using Strippers and Remfrys since getting back into cricket.
I have just bought an Adidas inner thigh pad and was wondering what the long bit of material is for?
I would put the strap from my outer thigh pad through the loops on the inner, so what is the additional bit for?

Take the foam parts out, secure all the Velcro hook areas to the loop areas and put them in the washing machine. Should be good as new after that!

There are way too many pages to go through, can someone summarise or rate the thigh pads in order of cost i.e. starting from the best money can buy downwards.
I have tried kookabura, Aero, padded shorts and traditional ones and the ball always seem to find a gap somewhere and hit on flesh. Somehow, I have never been hit on thigh pad.

I have experimented with different Aero Sizes but nothing, I still get hit on flesh at least once every few games. I have wondered if there is any point in me wearing one at all. All the thigh pads seem to do for me is come in my way.

1. Outside of thigh the area facing between square leg and fine leg
2. Inside of my left thigh when I sometime move around to face the bowler
3. The very small area between RH pad and thigh pad.
In terms of protection medium strippers and large aero leg guards worked best but made me very clumsy. Bat hitting the pad and not being able to bend as quick etc. So I have switched to small strippers and youth size pads.
Also the strippers elastic and velcro thing on waist is very uncomfortable and sometimes digs in the skin so I tend to take them off if I last till drinks.

I have purchased the SS version of the strippers and I like them very much indeed. They feel pretty robust and they are slightly smaller than the Aeros so I can move about a bit more in them.
Do like George's stuff though. Met him at the Vitas do and his gear looked superb. Ask him about his new bat sleeve though. It's made from bulls scrotum apparently.

i have bought the slazenger xlite version of strippers. havent worn they yet except to prance around my house. nets havent started yet :(
i am really pleased with how they feel and hopefully they will not move like my old thigh pad which is why i bought these. I will update once i have had a couple of net sessions

Argentinian Taurillon-Clemence for the first run of 50, very hard to get hold of and used by Hermes for bags that sell for 1000's. I've pulled a few strings from my previous work in the posh goods industry in France to get these made so it's a very different type of product, I'll post the website soon ;). Next run is currently between crocodile and python (real skins!). great to catch up with everyone who was at the show the other weekend at Vitas.

It has been two and a half years since I last bought some thigh pads.
Canners and Fattus Cattus have mocked me for this (and for the number of thigh pads I have bought in the past too) at our occasional net sessions. Be that as it may, I had some funds in my paypal account and decided to take the plunge on a new set of SG Ultimate thigh pads.
I went for these as they seem to be almost identical to the GM Original L.E. set

My fist impression was that I liked them - I think the GM ones have thicker straps, which would be better, but they are a good size - better for the more lithe of fellow I suspect - but good coverage. Worth also saying that as you can see from the pictures below, they are more like the GM ones than the promotional images suggest, especially around the hip. They are also really thin, which I liked.
The other interesting feature is that the inner guard is adjustable/removable depending on what is most comfortable for the wearer.
Size wise the outer guard is 41cm tall at its highest point and there is some thin hip protection.
As for the protection levels - no question they failed the mallet test - but good enough for mid level club cricket for sure. They are also pretty comfortable and nicely cushioned when on.

Now for a very similar product to the SG guard @Buzz has reviewed above, here are my SS Aerolites.
I bought this set from Cricmart.in a couple of months back out of curiosity more than anything. At a few pence under £11 they're definitely at the lower end of the price range (but remember you'll have to pay shipping too!)
They came in a carry bag which looks as if it will last which was an added bonus for those who like to keep everything nicely organised.
The Good
Price - like I said, £11 is a good price for an all in one set.
Thickness - at their widest point I made these guards 19mm which isn't bulky.
Curviness - these are nicely curved out of the packet into a shape roughly matching a thigh.
Materials - nice quality PVC stuff on the front and a towelled back.
The straps - nice and thick, stretchy enough they went all the way round me and fixed Velcro points to fasten them.
The not so good
Fit - for me (6ft1 with plenty of added padding) these were a bit of a tight fit and didn't provide as much coverage as my Aero P2s.
Closeness - this may be down to my fat thighs and the fact these are Indian men's size, but these sat on top of my thigh with a gap in some places, rather than wrapping round as you'd expect.
Adjustability - well, lack of, unlike the SG set these guards were fixed so the inner thigh protection could not be moved.
The mallet test

As we have to do, I put these on and smacked myself with a mallet.
I wasn't hitting particulart hard when I started to feel the impacts. To make it a fair test I then hit myself with force.
The edges of the guard provide less protection than the Middle.
Strangely, (or not now I think about it) the areas there was some air between the guard and my leg provided more cushioning than the well wrapped area.
Don't get me wrong, they provide suitable protection for most club players, but they aren't anywhere near my Aero, or the strettons I used to own.

i'll try and do a review of my moonwalkr thigh pads. they cost £20 delivered i think. the protection is probably equal to the p2's but havent carried out a side by side test so that is the next plan

It's been a while since I posted on here. But I realise I'd been failing in my duty to you guys to keep you up to date with what we've been doing. Without a lot of fanfare we recently released Stripper v7 into the UK at the beginnning of the current season. They won best thigh pad in the All Out Cricket Magazine gear review. We tinker with Strippers in little ways all the time but every few years we build up a set of major changes and release a new version. From memory v6 was released 3 or 4 years ago.
Anyway, the major changes (as always) are to the P1 model. Because of the protective commitment around P1 (bowling speeds of up to 100 mph) the P1's thigh guards have always been considerably stiffer than those of the P2 and P3. Consequently they have not fitted as wide a range of people as the other models do. This is especially true of tall slim people and to a lesser extent to people with very thick thighs. Consequently there has always been a trade off between protection and fit in the P1 that we have tolerated but been somewhat irritated by. Long story short we have managed to crack this conundrum in v7. We have kept the same foam sandwiches but manufactured them differently resulting in a much better fit to the thigh guards (not as stiff as v6 P1 and therefore they mould to thighs better) and no compromise on protection. We have also added wider straps and two straps on the P1 and larger P2s enabling more comfort (better hamstring blood flow) and on the P1 these straps enable the thigh pads to be drawn more snugly into the thigh. Changes to the P3 are minimal. The feedback from our athletes who tested these changes for us has been outstanding. So if you see the Stripper boxes in store with yellow v7 labels on the corner - you know you'll be better protected than ever.

I have v6 P1's but I have never had a problem with them moving. I'm 6ft 1in, wear large and I have very chunky rugby upper legs. Maybe a snug fit helps.
Only problem was when I mistimed a shot when I opened up and got hit on the inside of my right thigh. I've made sure the right pad is more around and never had a problem since.

Correct. The v7 has larger Velcro areas to cope with the thicker straps and the fact that there are two of them on the front leg.

Unfortunately I have not only lost weight but significant waist girth in last year or so. Large is the size I need as I am 6'3 but its the waist thats not tight enough anymore. Went to the a store and got some velcro tape to stick onto the mesh area, seems to help till I try to take the strap off when the velcro tape comes off with it as it doesn't stick that well to the mesh. Overall feels good, just wish I had a new version as I have only wore mine twice.

That is a pity. The other thing I didn't mention but if you look closely on the v7 we have enabled the waist strapping to cross over with the central opening - especially for slim(ming) people.

Which straps feel rough to you - the waist straps or the thigh straps? The whole purpose of Strippers is to stop your lower body protection from moving around so you can concentrate on batting and running faster.

I use these but I'm a noob to the forum and the game TBH.
I'm sure I'll make some mistakes along the way but this kookaburra set seem to work for me at the moment but the proof will be when I get hit I suppose.

I hated those kookaburra ones, I spent a small fortune on replacement shorts and they'd never last me a whole season!

I had those for three seasons and as came proclaims, kept having to buy replacement shorts as they would just wear through.
I then bought some stretton a and thought. Wow those looks were really poor, both in fit and protection.

i can vouch for this having being a stripper user since V2 (still going strong, pong a bit though!) the velcro waist right at the front digs in to my stomach where it never seems to line up correctly. The one further around on the right hip is perfect and ive never had to move that. I think the front ine either needs to be straight of curved the other way instead of up. Happy to PM and try and illustrate more ifbyou need me to!

IMO if you have less than a 33inch waist, even the v7 P1 strippers for all of their modification with the Velcro, you are going to have them sliding down. You just can't get them tight enough with the way the 2 halves of Velcro align, and if you do (a) it's such a small contact that they come undone, or (b) the two ends of the 'belt' sag in the middle over your crotch and becomes uncomfortable, the whole thing liable to slipping, and frankly messy.
Also, to get a tight fit on the front thigh guard on is not possible on a thigh of average proportion for a 31-32inch waist, and trying to do so just causes the elastic to give out at the seams within a few hours usage.
I've gone back to P2's but still haven't found the ultimate solution to protection, comfort and maneuverability.

Right then, back to thigh guards.
This review is on my GN test inner & outer thigh guards.
I got these on eBay from the GN clearance page. I think from memory the set was around £20 posted.
Looks
These are classic thigh guards, mostly white with red piping and GN branding, there isn't much else to say about this.
Fit
The outer thigh guard has two strips of velcro, one to go round your waist and one to go round you thigh. Thi inner thigh guard attaches to the waistband of the outer guard and has a single strap to wrap round your thigh. Hardly a revolutionary design, but why change what works?
As with most thigh guards of this kind, the are pre moulded to fit round your leg, and as is usually the case with these guards it is not a human leg they have been based on! It is also worth noting these are a bit bulkier than some competitior products.
Protection
I waited until I'd had a few nets before commenting on this. I have done this and can confirm the protection is good, I'd even go as far as to say it will be sufficient for anyone playinf any level of club cricket.
However, these are not a custom shape, so leave the customary gaps between your pad and thigh guard. They also offer less coverage than correctly sized/fitting Aero P2s.
My verdict
A good solid off the shelf thigh guard. Not as much coverage, and more bulky than Aero P2s, but at half the price these are a great option.
I will likely return to my strippers though because they are a more comfortable fit round my tree trunks!

The v7 has a bigger front thigh pad than before. This extra weight and the positioning of the Velcro seems to be the issue. I have the v7 P1 but have gone back to the 2012 iteration of P2 which doesn't have that problem.

You should adjust the waistband fitting strap to enable you to set the front closure system the way you want it. That's the point of the two closure system - it enables adjustment to your personal preference or waist size.

As long as the top of the hip pad protects your hip bone and the thigh pad is slightly overlapped by your legguard, then you should be fine. If you have sensitive areas exposed then you have the wrong size.

To move the rear thigh guard to protect your inner thigh you should undo both lots of velcro - front and waistband. This will cause the rear thigh guard to float free. Then re-attach the velcro once the thigh guard position is as you want it. Hope this helps...

the problem with this is that there are very few people who have owned and used all three to be able to give an impartial view (and I haven't owned all three either!) I have had p1s and strettons and trialled some remfry's
for 99% of club cricketers my view is that either the off the shelf branded products or the Aero P2's are perfect.

The Aero P1 Strippers are very comfortable and protective, I would highly recommend them as the are very easy to put on as well. I haven't tried them but I would really like to in the future but I've heard the Stretton Fox thigh pads are very good. They are similar to Remfry thigh pads but being based in the UK will be cheaper to ship to the UK. I believe that there are some new products from them for 2016 but I'm not sure if they are out yet or when they come out but I'm sure @StrettonFox Sports will be able to clarify the release dates.

There was something on their section but I've not seen too much of an update tbh. I would love to get some Stretton Fox thigh pads but they are a bit expensive for me at the moment baring in mind I bought new Aero P1s just over a year and a half ago

Hi everyone, a quick update.
I've been restricted to what I can say at this stage but some information can be mentioned as it influences SS16. This is the first platform where this info is being mentioned.
Stretton Fox is currently in discussions with another cricket brand regarding collaborations of current and new technologies moving forward into 2017, the immediate result is all developments under Stretton Fox have been and are currently on hold until this is fully confirmed. I can't say who and any more details other than if everything goes well 2017 will see more kit innovation than I personally think has happened in over 30 years.
How this effects the current situation is 2016 will not see Stretton Fox soft goods.
The batting pad images were actually (I think most people guessed anyway!) a bit of a spoof to get people talking) there is an amount of truth in the technology as we are looking outside the box a bit, but the actual pads are very different. A few people have seen the real designs but otherwise this is, as the above on hold.
To the very patient and kind players who have kept in close touch waiting for a landing date I can only apologise. It does mean 2016 will not have all the stated kit, but honestly, if all goes to plan you'll forget that in about 2secs after seeing whats hopefully in store!

Hi, depending on availability, an Aero p2 or one of either the GM or SG option.
It has been two and a half years since I last bought some thigh pads.
Canners and Fattus Cattus have mocked me for this (and for the number of thigh pads I have bought in the past too) at our occasional net sessions. Be that as it may, I had some funds in my paypal account and decided to take the plunge on a new set of SG Ultimate thigh pads.
I went for these as they seem to be almost identical to the GM Original L.E. set

My fist impression was that I liked them - I think the GM ones have thicker straps, which would be better, but they are a good size - better for the more lithe of fellow I suspect - but good coverage. Worth also saying that as you can see from the pictures below, they are more like the GM ones than the promotional images suggest, especially around the hip. They are also really thin, which I liked.
The other interesting feature is that the inner guard is adjustable/removable depending on what is most comfortable for the wearer.
Size wise the outer guard is 41cm tall at its highest point and there is some thin hip protection.
As for the protection levels - no question they failed the mallet test - but good enough for mid level club cricket for sure. They are also pretty comfortable and nicely cushioned when on.

Agree with Buzz. I take it were taking $AUD? If so, $75 for a set of P2's at Kingsgrove, or $95 for the P1's if you're feeling a bit fancy. Though I like them, lots of forum members find them a little bulky.

To echo one of the earlier posts, what is the pick of the cheaper options?
I am only average club level so don't necessarily need crazy protection or coverage and would err towards a less bulky, comfortable, secure fitting option.
Was thing of the SG Ultimate combo or SS Aerolite combo perhaps... anything else to try?

IJC have just posted a video of the Ton Classic dual thigh pad set, they are dirt cheap at 14.99 a set.
The protection looks very thin and light but going from @Buzz comments they would probably be fine for league and club cricket. Being less than 15 quid they're worth a punt I think.

Another addition to this thread. The Gray Nicolls 2017 Test Thigh
This is a standalone outer thigh guard, that retails for around £17.95
I've had a look online and the inner thigh pad would be an additional £17.50, making the cost of a "set" £35.45
Considering you can get a Gray Nicolls all in one thigh guard set for £24 these probably wouldn't be the best value for money.
The guard itself is a simple design, with 2 straps and 2 fixed points to attach them to.
The fit is comforatable and gives a good coverage, but as with all off the shelf thigh pads you'll have a little gap the ball will almost certainly manage to find.
This guard is incredibly light and thin, with a towelled back. This is great for comfort, but the protection is reduced as a result. The protection level will be fine for club cricket, but I definitely felt it more when I wacked myself with the mallet than I did wearing Aero P2s.
Overall a good product that's very light and thin, so should fit nicely under even the most skin tight of whites! It will offer sufficient protection for a club player. Value for money wise you can get better "bang for your buck" elsewhere, but they're not the most expensive either.

Lads, after a bit of advice regarding sizing on the Aero P2's.
i only started playing last year, and have been using a pair of kookaburra batting shorts, but the front leg pad doesn't seem very good, as it doesn't really cover the entire area it should. As a result, i'm currently sporting a lovely bruise about 4 inches above my knee.
I'm looking at getting a pair of P2's and was wondering what the sizing is like. From what i understand it goes on height rather than waist. I'm 5'8 and a mate who's a similar size wears a medium, though i'm a a bit wider in the waist than he is!
What have people on here found with the sizing?

I'd say you'd be a medium for a normal fit, large if you one of the sort of blokes that likes a bit of an oversized tight pad.

Hey there.
The best way to size yourself for P2 strippers is loosley based on hieght but the most accurate way is to use the sizing guide on our website or on the back of the stripper box.
The measurement you want is from the top of your pelvic (hip) bone to the middle of your knee.

Initial thought are the fit is lovely, I feel protected, they feel better than any other kit I have tried, kook combi, p1's2's3's.

I have more than a gut! 6ft and more than 16st and the fitness to prove it, and I wear medium p2s with no trouble of them falling down they fit great and are comfortable

I bought this a few weeks ago, very impressed. Every bit as comfy as my previous P2 strippers at a fraction of the price, seem decently made too. I'm not quite sure how the protection compares with the P2s, not really been tested out. I was very disappointed with the quality of my last P2s, the material fell apart after not much more than 1 season. Before that I made the mistake of buying a Gray Nicolls Omega XRD 360 dual thigh guard on eBay, the protection was outstanding but it was unbelievably bulky and uncomfortable, used it in 1 net and sold it on...

Just bought a pair myself. Fit OK (I'm a big fella) and very light. Will give them a spin in the nets this weekend. At 15 quid they look a bargain.

easiest thing is to type the kit into google and go to, google shop, searches all the websites! I also have most sites saved as favourites and search them frequently.....lol

Was considering these too as my P2's are wearing badly. Ideally I'd like to see what Stretton Fox's new ones will be like, but might need a stop gap.

Hi, these are pretty thin but quite tall, so cover a lot of your hip and leg, more than the average pad.
They will need some shaping and fitting to be comfortable.

Got myself one of those Klubb thigh pad set, and like what Buzz has said the main pad is very tall but for 11 pounds delivered I dont think you can complain.
The quality seems really decent for the price and I can see myself using them in the future, theyre not too bulky and appear to provide some good protection.
I have a theory as to why they could be so cheap, maybe they are a batch of pads made in error (i.e. the manufactures got the wrong template or made to wrong size spec)

yeah they've sold those for a few years now. I have two (bought one of a fellow forumite and another off eBay) and they are much better than the other offerings, but they are rather expensive. I just love how you can do them as tight as you want due to the whole band being able to attach to the velcro. They have a low profile too, so they never get in the way.

Think they were just in the sale at 50% off, along with pads, gloves, bags etc. I bought a set but they're way too big for me. Even the waist strap is too big. I'll offer them to some teammates before sticking em on eBay. Shame tho as I really like them, actually feel better than than the Aero P2s I reckon.

Yep, but P2’s seem to constantly fit the bill as a midrange option.
The only ones I’ve tried that have been as comfy were @petehosk RS thighpads

Agree with @DorsetDan, bought some a couple of seasons ago. The protection they offer is excellent however they felt incredibly bulky and inflexible, I sold them on and replaced them with the TON Classic ones that IJC used to stock. Not as good protection as P2s, but very good value, good enough for the level I play at and far more comfortable than the GNs.

I have the set sold by affinity and they are very comfortable and light offering superb protection. My only problem is that they don't stay in place for long unless you wear them very high.

I have both the p1 v6 and the moonwalkrs. I would say the moonwalkrs are quite slim compared to p1 and lighter too. They provide excellent protection and so far they have been the first set of thigh pads that i have used that stay in place

For a thigh pad, quite a lot. Especially as you have to import them from Aus, pay import duty etc. That said, Luke tries to minimise the additional costs as much as possible. In terms of performance and comfort though, the Remfry pads are hard to beat. Don’t get me wrong, the P1 isn’t bad at all, although I did struggle with the hip guard, and also found that they slipped down regularly.

i saw one little post about them, its interesting to know how many forumites will be buying it for coming season, I wouldn't as i don't bat that much, mostly in the nets :D

Most thigh pads do exactly the same thing, so it’s an unnecessary expense to buy a handmade thigh pad and have it imported from Australia. I must admit, the only reason I did it was because I was intrigued as to what all the fuss was about, and why they are so popular with the pros. Also, I guess it’s good to support a family business that has grown through word of mouth and doesn’t even offer a penny in sponsorship deals.

I think the hip protectors are a complete waste of time. I’ve never been hit on the hip (cue getting hit on the hip at nets this coming Sunday), and they make the overall package a bit too bulky. There’s only so much you can stuff down your trousers!

I find the hip protection bulky but an essential part of the thigh pad. Of all the places on the lower body to get hit, getting struck on the corner of hip bone is by far the most painful. When I first started playing, thigh pads were essentially a foam rectangle held in place with two pieces of Velcro. The ball that climbs and jags back in was horrible without proper protection in that area

Personally used separate thigh and inner thigh guard combo for the last 4 seasons, I have Aero, GM and GM all in one same style thigh guards and all are a lot more bulky than the separate Adidas thigh pads I use

Yes they look good. Tried to get some of these from Onlinestockist last year but no success as yet.
But the problem I have with all thigh pads is that they don't go down low enough on tall players. They don't protect the bit just above the knees, especially on the back leg. I sometimes used to get hit there and it's painful with bad bruising. I bet the same applies to the Indian made ones.

I tried some and thought the same. Good padding, but unless you have thighs like a rugby player, they are too big.
I have some new thigh pads arriving this week to review. I suspect they will be too bulky, but we shall see.

GN legend thigh pad, gn test inner.
I am pretty pleased with them to be honest. Leather outer on the legend. Nice detailing on the straps (the test straps look better than the legend ones, which is odd)
Good coverage.
A little thicker than I would like, but not bulky.
Need a little reshaping.
Good protection on the mallet test.

Couldn't find the Stretton Fox thread, but I ordered the new SF thigh guard set from ProDirect. Gave it a warm in the oven and it moulds to the body ok, although doesn't stay that way. My biggest observation though was the weight - these are so much heavier than my trusty Aero P2s. I'm gonna have to send them back.

After having a set of Remfry’s for 4-5 years I came to the realisation that my outer one was just too small. I’m 6’1 and have the small size and have loved them apart from the size issue. Nothing rivals the fit and the customisation you get in regards to fit with the whole strap being being the loop rather than hook. Usually it’s reversed on other thigh pads and it’s always a small area that gets stretched over time.
I tried on other combos (Aero, Moonwalkr 2.0 etc) but once you’ve gone Remfry, you can’t really go back to others. Not even about the protection, for me it is all about the fit bit also the longevity. I am a heavy sweater and have many a long innings in mine and they are still in top top shape, bar some sweat marks on the leather and bands. I’ve seen many aero strippers at my club looking rather tatty and in need of replacing after a few seasons.
Fast forward to today and with my birthday coming up next week, I finally replaced the small size with a medium. It may seem like a small change in that the length only goes from 36cm up to 41cm, but the whole coverage of the pad is just much better, as it really wraps around my leg now, rather than having a large chunk of my rear end being exposed haha. Photos really show the size difference.
This will be the last thigh pad I need as it is the correct size now and you can send them back to Luke and he refurbs them with new towelling, leather and straps when they get a bit tatty.

Something I forgot to add - all of the thigh pads are slightly different. To be expected with a handmade product, but definitely noticeable differences between the shape and size, even when they are labeled as the same size on the packet, one might have a larger bottom part while the other may be more rounded. The overall length was consistent but the width and curvature of the pads did vary quite a bit.
Even the inner thigh pads had differences. I found one particular one much wider than the others in the exact same size.
Obviously not possible if you’re not in AUS, but if you are id highly recommend trying them all on to find your right fit. I was lucky as they had the blue I was after out the back and it fit perfectly . Custom made ones obviously may be exempt from this as you can tell Luke exactly what you want.

It has been a very long time since I have done a really good thigh pad review.
I know you guys have missed them... So here goes.
Three different thigh pads here to give an example.
Moonwalkr
GN test/pro performance
Remfry combo
The GN combo is what I have been using for a while, they are a good fit for me whilst providing enough protection and coverage without being bulky. These are staying in the bag, I did look at getting something different for me, but I am not playing enough as it is so there is no point.
The Remfry I bought for me, but they are a touch big, so am saving them for my son (see below)
The Moonwalkr I have bought for my son who has just moved into u14 and has gone though a chunky growth spurt. I expect him to be taller than me by next cricket season... 😲
He was using the kookaburra pro thigh pads but they are quite flimsy to be honest and small. Really small.
The GN's are well made, and pretty standard. The inner has good coverage and is slightly thicker than the test model, I have a legend outer too somewhere but it isn't that comfortable and is thicker.
The test outer is pretty thin so really not bulky which I like. If you are shorter than 5ft11 I suspect they will be a bit big. For reference I am 6ft1 and these are perfect.
The Remfrys are pretty similar, but heavier and provide better protection. Obviously the strapping is bang average. I really don't understand why they haven't fixed that over the last 50 years...
The moonwalkrs are interesting, they sit on the hip and provide quite wide coverage. The ones I have here are the large size, the mediums were too short for my son. The leg strapping is a bit nuts, but that badbois is not budging when on your leg. Not one for those who have been doing leg day though, you will loose circulation to your lower leg.
Token towling, because why not.
I actually really like the moonwalkrs, they aren't as heavy as the remfrys but provide excellent protection and aren't that thick. My son has done the mallet test and said they were good. The fact that loads of pros are using the says there are pretty good. Or have been handed out for free at the IPL. Who knows.
One more thing... More thigh pads should come with nice bags.
They boy immediately said he wanted a different inner which seems odd as I think the shape is good. The apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree there then.

I was intrigued by your good impression of the Moonwalkr, and am tempted to try them out. How many thigh pads is too many? Asking for a friend obviously.
Out of interest - is anybody bothered by/notices how much thigh pads weigh when they wear them? Just interested, as I guess it's something I haven't given much thought to. I guess because either the ones I've worn have been light enough, or they sit so high on the legs that it doesn't feel like I'm strapped to lead weights (I'm looking at you Keeley Superior pads).

The weight makes little difference in my experience, other than for the weight of the kit bad.
