Thanks to Talisman for the tools, finally arrived :D
Look good, will take some pics later incase anyone is interested.
Also recieved some nice spiral grips and hammer edge sheets
-
Ahhh good to hear!!
I guess you can go and make some world class bats now!
What tools did you get anyway?
-
Time to start your cricketing empire then Leo - from small acorns......
Just go easy with the draw-knife - easy to take off too much
-
Make sure you wear suitable footwear when using the draw knife too... flip flops are not, and may lead to nasty injuries as I found out!
What else did you get?
-
Got a metal spokeshave and a drawknife both look great :)

Cant seem to get the toe profile right :|
PS. Not yet finished. 8)
-
Looks a good effort! When that toe gets done it will look great!
-
Looks a good effort , a bit of tidying up on the edges and spine of the bat, some more off the toe aswell .Try either the spokeshave or handplane to do the finer work .
-
Yeah looks good. Go careful on the toe with the drawknife as it can quickly be shaped into a cocktail stick! Are you using a round or flat bottom spokeshave?
-
That some toe to block out the yorkers mate....have you slipped with the drawknife and taken off some wallpaper in the process?
Look forward to the finished bat and the instinct stickers!
-
Haha yeah I dont know if you can see but there are some pencil lines of how I want the toe to be.
Just weighed the bat and its 2lb 11 at the mo
Toe 22mm
Edges 28mm
Shoulder 12mm
Ping... Priceless

i know it's not in line with the topic, but talking about injuries with a drawknife. I was using my old drawknife when it got caught in a knotted area on the toe, the handle came off and as i kept pulling with the other hand it slammed into my thumb, cutting down to the bone and cutting some of the tendon. Stitches were required. Needless to say i had done this to my other thumb a few months before, but not quite so bad, resulting in some corresponding scars on each thumb - that drawknife has gone!
-
thrown across the room aswell? lol
-
Ha ha, my incident was more due to lack of talent combined with low intelligence, but thankfully didn't end in such a nasty wound! On the plus side I learnt my lesson, and love the draw knife, somehow very satisfying!
-
across the room, along with shaking my thumb, later to realise there was a blood trail all along the wall and floor down to the first aid box..... it was sore!
sorry, whilst im here i should say thats not a bad effort leo, profile looks decent. Just go for it with the drawknife, dont be scared!
-
Thanks Vantage, will get the drawknife sharpened then try to take some weight off, am surpised its only 2lb 11 at the mo
-
thats the key sharp tools
-
I know that you can grip it firmer with bare hands, but I wear gloves when using the drawknife. Not ideal but I'd rather that than cut myself.
Bat looks good, bit more off that toe and it will pickup like a beaut I'm sure. Post pics of the changes if you make any please.

Hows the batmaking going - getting the hang of it yet?
Would be good to see some more photos of your progress - i was out in the garage last night attacking one of my bats with one of Norbs travishers - damn good bits of kit if you can get hold of them!

I've seen them for £70, how much did you pay if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking of adding one of these, or something similar to a gutter plane.

Craig gave me a good price of one from here. I think it comes to around £40 including VAT+Postage...

It's not mine -i'm currently renting it off Norb, i think he charges a litre of cider per bat - but like you, i will be wanting to buy one as well as theyr'e so useful (im using a 5 which seems to give some really deep concaving)

Not using the 4?
-
I spoke to those guys (G&M) the other week funnily enough as I was looking for another travisher and they didn't have any in stock, but may be worth checking next week.
-
Using the 5 at the moment - for my sins i am yet to use the 4 - which one is your weapon of choice?

I dont use either as you know but when I was both really..... keep them for a while, I'm sure we can eventually come to a deal via willow or something
-
Sounds like a plan to me, cheers - you got your long handle yet :D
-
Look on ebay us for the Atherton and Snell leather shaves, got one coming next week.
-
Ahhhhh, i see Tom converted you to the snells then - i think he has shares in the company the way he was plugging them :D

nope :D no worries though

Haha I have been converted but by Bill not Tom, I should think Tom likes them as they are what Fusion uses.

reckon you'll be up and running by the start of the season or is that a little optimistic?
-
So slightly off topic, but guess it's kind of tool related...
When sanding, any recomendations on a dust mask? I'm finding that the one's I use I end up steaming my glasses breathing through my nose, and if i don't use one I end up with a nose full of willow dust! Not that I'm complaining, becuase I love the smell but can't be healthy!
-
I use these and they seem alright for sanding (could always wear goggles over the glasses if misting badly?)

But i would like to use this and would reccomend if problems persist

yeah, similar to what I have, but hadn't thought of goggles, that may well do the trick, cheers pal.
Ha ha, DV would be awesome, would love to see the look on the wife's face when she brings me a mug of coffe out to the shed to find me in that! genius!
-
Actually - i wonder if ayrtek could modify one of his helmets to look more darth vaderish - nothing would make me happier than seeing a batsmen stride out in a BSI tested darth vader cricket helmet.......surely this is the future :D
-

Very optimistic, didn't realise it would be as hard as this ;)
I mean I'm not bad at it, but wouldn't want to properly sell any until they are perfect.
Will upload some pics of the bat soon, its looking a lot better now.
-
Leo are you planning to use a machine sander or just hand sand entirely?
I like the look of those Snell and Atherton's as they look really fun to use... But at the moment i'm trying to seek a second hand travisher.

Im getting kinda worried, after I do a bat I always have trouble breathing. Could the willow dust be entering my lungs and embedding in the aleveolar walls, causing a thickening of the walls causing a slower diffusion of oxygen?
GJ am hand sanding, getting a nice finish with this steel wool im finding
