Big start for India beating hosts and favourites Australia in the opening match.
Going to be very difficult for Aus to qualify for the Semi final stage now as there are two groups of 5 with only the top 2 going through. In that group are NZ, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
-
Australia lost? Oh, that’s a shame.

I'm not one to usually p*ss on the womens game, but this is pretty disheartening in a World Cup opener between two of the best sides
Poonam Yadav to Gardner, 1 no ball, what was that? Grubber, bounces twice, sneaks through the legs and rattles the timber. Gardner hangs on and chats to the umpire. Since it bounced twice before reaching the crease, it is a no-ball

Yadav is a super slow leggie IIRC, is it any worse than balls bowled in the men's game at the elite level that don't even land on the cut strip?

I was having a discussion with some friends the other day about which sport has the most noticeable difference in quality between men and women. I suggested cricket, as it’s far slower in the women’s game, and just doesn’t look right as pretty much any “big” shot is a slog towards a much shorter boundary. I’m not slagging it off, the WC win against India was riveting stuff, but when a women’s team has a bad day it’s always a REALLY bad day.

So she bowled a no-ball, which to be fair did keep low - why is that such a big deal?
Instead of focusing on that 1 ball, why not applaud the other 24 balls she bowled that rewarded her with 4/19, getting the best batters out and winning the game? There were some fantastic wrong-uns in there that nobody picked, and the lack of pace did everyone.

You need to watch Sophie Devine a bit more. She can clear any fence, on any oval, in any direction!
We should appreciate Womens cricket for what it is, and try not to compare it to the men's game.
The Women's game has come a long way, but not every country can throw the same ammount of money at it as India / England / Aus. I applaud Thailand for getting to the world cup but think they might have a tough time.
-
I feel like it is often some unfortunate timing that doesn't help.
As eluded to, she bowled really well aside from a rancid double bouncer, but this will be what gets highlighted.
Last year I watched highlights of Eng v West Indies at Grace Road. Just before the 1st ball of the day, Isa Guha is on commentary bigging up the West Indian bowlers as the best pace lineup in the world. Almost inevitably the first ball was absolute slop, a really slow, loopy full bunger which the England opener climbed into, if it didn't go for six it wasn't far off, she walloped it!

I just typed her name in to YouTube and watched her hit 5 sixes in a row. Very impressive. The ones on the leg side were huuuge!

It's the whole play I am criticising, not just the bowling itself (which is bad enough).
Getting "out" to a ball that bounced twice before the crease and the subsequent confusion that followed as to whether it was legitimately out or not is amateurish. Fully aware it's "woke" to defend womens cricket, I'd hazard a guess I watch more women's cricket than 95% of people on this forum, but blindly defending every play of it is part of the problem.
I probably watch 300+ "top level" T20 games a year, and I can say with reasonable certainty I've not seen a double bounce delivery get a wicket. Let alone at the showpiece of a T20 World Cup opener between 2 of the best sides.
The rest of her figures look great, and I believe she won player of the match, so fair play to her for that, but that delivery was a shambles and I'd expect she'd admit it too.
-
The women's game will never be exactly the same ad the men's, but then how many men have the physical attributes of a top men's T20 player?
The biggest issue, IMO, is still the drop off in quality from the top players to the rest of their teams. Once more money and time goes into developing professional women's players then the overall standard will rise and you'll have much more engaging competitive cricket.

See my previous reply, it's the whole play that was embarrassing.
I didn't watch all of this game today (I have 2 PSL games to watch instead with a slight clash and time constraints), but for me it's absurd how defensive people get about women's cricket when anybody criticises any aspect of it. When Denly dropped that dolly in the Ashes, nobody said, "don't talk about that, look at his other great fielding in the match", it's a flashpoint and can and should be legitimately discussed. Joe will have been disappointed with it, as should Yadav.

Agree entirely, it's good to be open and honest about this, the difference in physical attributes will always cause a gulf, particularly in the batting. The problem is when people are obtuse about this and make claims such as Sarah Taylor being the best wicket keeper in the world, mens or womens.
And I'd be inclined to agree again, the standard is clearly improving year on year which is great and some of the franchise leagues (particularly the WBBL IMO) are competitive and enjoyable and leads to further development worldwide. Hopefully things like this WC can kick cricket on in the lesser developed nations and we'll see an even higher standard going forward.
FWIW - I'd like to see more Hundred and Blast games as double headers (womens first then mens or vice versa), as it will familiarise women to playing in front of bigger crowds at more established stadiums, and has more chance of engaging passing fans to become followers of the women's game.
-
I'm not bothered about the no ball. Didn't one of the men's pros develop a special 2 bounce delivery a few years back that got people out a lot? (before the rules changed).
I like watching women's cricket, but I don't find it very useful technically because it's all about gently lofted sweeps and slogs to long on, not many good ground shots or straight shots. The bowling looks quite slow, but I'm sure the pace would challenge decent club players. Maybe long format games are different from a stroke making perspective though, I haven't seen many of those

The salient point with the Denly incident is that no one tried to extrapolate that one-off moment of poor cricket to pass judgment on the overall standard of the game

Some Worcs 2nd teamer did but not sure if he actually ever bowled it in a proper game.

Why is a leg spinner accidentally bowling a double bouncer such a big deal? It’s a leggies version of a “harmy”

Superb point

Good thing that nobody is doing this here then eh... Easy to try and straw man somebody and put words into their mouth.
If you read my other comments you'll see I praise various aspects of the women's game and stress how it is improving year on year. As I said before though, for some reason it's sacrilege to criticise any element without risking the wrath of the woke.
-

It's only "such a big deal" because people don't like hearing criticism of the womens game. If it happened in a women's game, rules are it's ok and you must focus on the positives. Bring up Harmison's first ball in Aus all you like though. It's cool. Dems the rules
-
Or the Sri Lankan cricket carries off the field after getting a catch on the bonce at long on!
-
Thank goodness you didn't see the fumbled Aus stumping otherwise you would have been mortified rather than merely disheartened in a World Cup opener between two of the best sides ;)
God bless the PSL!
-

Did you see her stop that two at long on though? Focus on the positives please Kulli.
-
Thank goodness the PSL is the epitome of everything cricket should aspire to
Eyes on for the double bouncer! Tbf Moeen has just bowled a full bunger which almost got a wicket so maybe it's all about well constructed bad deliveries as Ashwin believes.... Anddd as I speak hes bowled a length ball and got Fakhar caught at cow corner. Funny old game

I should make some popcorn.
This discussion is more exciting than women's world cup. :D

Ah it's really not is it, we're going round in circles and it's getting facetious. Think I'm done on the topic...
Until WI vs Thailand tomorrow ;)

SA vs Aus t20 is a dire one. Least the women’s WC game was more entertaining
-
So how did everyone cope with the new change of on field umpires not calling the no-balls? I didn't see a front foot replay all night.
-
Wanting to move on, but it's funny how I can't remember seeing a double bouncer in years, and then see two the same night - this one from Dale Steyn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgZZW04qkAo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgZZW04qkAo)
Sounds like there was a bit of confusion there as well.

No idea if you’re being sincere on the double bounce thing, but I think we can agree it is not a common occurrence.
Once again for those at the back, the fact it was a double bouncer and it deceived the batsman enough to rattle the stumps and the confusion after all contributed to it being a bit of a farce. You’ve inadvertently shown the difference there I’d say by the fact that the batsman in the men’s game just danced down the pitch and smoked it.
Next you’re going to be telling me the Thai women today were power hitters
-
Yes, I am being sincere. I must not watch as much cricket as you, but I genuinely cannot remember one at an this level, perhaps the Daniel Sams ball in this year's BBL, but that didn't even get near the pitch, so yes, I agree with you that it's not a common occurence, and to have two in the same night was odd.
I'm simply pointing out that you use words like "farce' and -

Most people just accept that s*** happens, and move on, but each to their own.
As I've said before comparing the Women's to Men's game is pointless. Accept both and enjoy them for what they are.
Thailand power hitters?? Why would I tell you that?
-
Yeah I don't think there's any point focusing on one no ball. There are no balls in all forms of cricket and it's a free hit whatever the cause of it. We should focus on how the game is played the rest of the time, which I think is way different from men's cricket. Actually club cricketers could maybe learn a lot about careful placement of lofted shots without necessarily hitting it out of the ground.
Also we are probably assuming all the CBF members are men here. It's sad that no women feel able to chip in to this discussion, and maybe there are in fact none on the forum(i don't know this, but I'm guessing from the things that are said on this thread)

Just don't understand why England would send arguably their best bat in Beaumont in at 7!
-
Just don't understand why England would send arguably their best bat in Beaumont in at 7!
Trying to be a bit too clever I reckon. All for tactical thinking in T20s but, up to a point, keeping it simple is the smart choice. Get your best bat to face a lot of balls and they'll score a lot of runs.
-
Good game that - good chase from SA. Thought they had messed that one up at one stage
-
Good recovery from England against the might of Thailand. 7/2 after 2 overs. The two early wickets were abysmal, and I can’t decide if the cause was arrogance or ineptitude.
-

Ya, that puzzled me too...didnt she used to open in the past? Anyone know why she has been dropped so low down the order?
-
Ya, that puzzled me too...didnt she used to open in the past? Anyone know why she has been dropped so low down the order?
Possibly because they don’t have a clue what they’re doing?
-

I believe the stated reasoning is so they have a "finisher" down the order. Completely ignores the differences in women's and men's T20 and the fact that England don't have that many quality top order batting options, but that's not shocking. Some of the coaching decisions in women's cricket are unfathomable sometimes.
-
As mature a chase as you'll see from Pak this AM! Sentences I never thought I'd say ;)
-
The Indian team seems to be on a roll...I did not expect them to beat NZ! That too with Harmanpreet still struggling to find any form.
-
Bloody annoying news breaking this morning- both Semi finals are planned for Thursday in Sydney (odd enough).
What makes this problematic though is that there’s an 80% chance of rain, predicted around 20-30mm (plus rain in the days preceding).
Knockout games have to be min 10/overs a side to count
And NO RESERVE DAY for Semi Finals
WTF?!?!?
Also, worry for Perry as she was carried off today. Really doesn’t seem like it’s Aus’s tournament this year.
England should be watching the SA/WI game tomorrow intently praying for a WI win
-
Pretty abysmal planning if that's right.
-
Both games today rained off
South Africa top the group and play Australia
England play India.
The rain will decide the finalists unfortunately, Looking forward to our semi and I hope it gets played, England have improved since the first game and India have been the best side so far
-
Great to hear Thailand put on a good show today. I didn't see it, but 3/150 against Pakistan including what I heard was the equal 4th largest powerplay total for the entire tournament! Shame it was rained out.
The forecast is not improving for the semi finals. If they can't be played it sets up a India v Sth Africa final
-

Just a shame that the local media don't appear to be particularly interested in what the women's team has achieved. The Thai cricket board has been very supportive of the women and I believe are chucking more money at the women than the men's game out here - the men are currently coming a distant second in games against Singapore, Malaysia, HK and Nepal in the Asian Cricket Eastern conference being played and hosted in Thailand at the moment.
I have on occasions seen colts sides training in the nets whilst playing out here, bowling machines and all, which is a good sign.
-
First final abandoned without a ball being bowled. England out, and India into the final. Shame, as it was building up to being a great game.
https://www.cricket.com.au/news/match-report/india-england-womens-t20-world-cup-semi-final-abandoned-rain-scg-sydney/2020-03-05 (https://www.cricket.com.au/news/match-report/india-england-womens-t20-world-cup-semi-final-abandoned-rain-scg-sydney/2020-03-05)
Not looking promising for the next game either, but the rain may be clearing.
-
What a terribly planned tournament, no reserve days for knockouts is crazy. And having them both at the same place and this reducing the margin for squeezing in any sort of game if it rains is even crazier.
-

The playing them both in the same place is the most crazy thing to me. England been completely stuffed, albeit they should have topped the ground in the 1st place. Surely you could play the other semi in Adelaide for example, giving a whole day to get the game in etc....
I reckon Aus vs SA might actually get a reduced overs game in. For the good of the tournament Aus really do need to be in the final as well.
-
Yep 2nd semi full 20/20 game just started.
England girls must be gutted.
-
Awful scheduling but England women were dire and have gone backwards over the last few years
-
Awful scheduling but England women were dire and have gone backwards over the last few years
Few confusing decisions about batting orders, etc... and they could really do with another power hitter (ie someone like Verma) but I don't think they were dire. Sciver had an excellent tournament, bowlers were generally very good. Just let down by a poor performance in the first game.
-
Awful scheduling but England women were dire and have gone backwards over the last few years
One bad performance doesn't make you dire. I do agree that as a team they haven't progressed as they should have done following the world cup win.
-
Leaves a sour taste to me that Aus are in the final. Have been pretty lacklustre (for hosts and such short favourites) and incredibly lucky to go through. SA can count themselves very unlucky. Though their game management requires a lot of work. Chloe Tryon coming in with 10 balls to go or whatever is insane
-
Awful scheduling but England women were dire and have gone backwards over the last few years
Bit harsh in terms of dire, dont think the standard in general has been as good as previous years granted, but they got better as tournament progressed, probably would have beaten India too
Agreed though they have gone backwards, and selections havent helped. Some players hanging on cos their face fits IMO
-
Can't help but think this final would have been alot closer with England in it.
India have don't have the experience on the big stage, it showed in the WC final against us at Lords and has showed again.
