I assume covid has mucked up all the 2020 stash and so the 2021 stuff is going to be a but if a mix.
Other than the NB stuff which has been launched in Aus, has anyone seen any other kit releases?
-
I can’t see much changing, stores are still full of 2020 stickered stock and for the major brands to go and change them wouldn’t make them best pleased.
-
Aus GN 2020/21 is out.
For UK, I really can't see much change at all, there is going to be so much stock left i would imagine
-

The 2021 stuff would have been ordered with overseas suppliers by the brands well in advance, many of them before lockdown. It will be difficult for them to change/cancel those orders.
The 2021 ranges will almost certainly launch as 'normal' but probably with less fanfare, and the knock on effect might be that very few retailers actually order the gear.

Jake, do you think all of this in 2020 will effect the timings of the launches??

I can see most retail shops telling their reps not to bother if they try and book an appointment to get an early order in (historically some try and get orders for the following season in from retailers as early as July; Gray Nics and New Balance being the earliest usually)
I can't see how the Lords Trade show still goes ahead, but maybe someone with more current knowledge than me can confirm. With no trade show it will mean reps will have to visit their retailers individually which will take time, especially if you combine it with the above point about retailers not wanting to hear from their reps when they've got a shop full of stock.
I suspect there will be some relatively low key launches to the trade around the normal time (from now to October mostly) - but they perhaps won't go public as quickly with them, in order to give the retailers some breathing space.
Something will have to give though, like I said, most brands will have committed to 2021 ranges long ago.
-
Would it not be relatively simple to push 2021 ranges back though? Or have a launch early in the new year?
-
I have had a message from GN, they will be doing some new stuff, but are looking after their retailers who still have lots of this year's stock left after a difficult summer.
-
Would it not be an opportune time for companies to go back to the 2 year cycle that I seem to remember 20 years ago rather than having new kit released every year?
-
It ought to highlight to us the madness of it all?
-
Lords Trade show was Last hosted in 2018.
Gn have a few new lines from January, not seen them
No news from Kook yet
New helmet from Shrey, due Jan onwards
-
Interesting video from @VKS

Basically what has already been said, most softs etc are the same as last year, some new bat models, but the big producers are looking after the struggling retailers where they can.
-
I’ve seen one bat that should sell by the bucket loads, something I suggested to them a year ago. Will be amazed if it’s not one of the best selling bats this/next year

A new version of the Purist did come out this year but I think it was limited to Romada

My bet will be on GN releasing a retro model. Maybe the ultimate or fingers crossed a modern version of the Excalibur as always loved that bat.
Even better would be if they brought back the original check coloured stickers. A modern ultimate with Gold and purple checks would be superb
-
If there’s genuine interest in a retro GM, and I mean at least 10-15 people commit, on a grade 707 price point then we should be able to get one model made

Yep I’m in. Icon F2 profile with 2020 icon labels

Sounds like scope for a new topic and a poll with some options...
For me, I hope it's Kookaburra bringing the Beast stickers back!
-
If this isn't a GM Purist, I'll be unhappy. 😂
This may be sacrilegious, but I personally feel the Maxi or the Graeme Smith profile are better profiles to sell, especially in the modern era. (And I absolutely adore the Purist!)

I've always wanted vintage maestro stickers but a modern classical bat...
-
I'd love to see the Kookaburra bubble circa '98 make a comeback. Especially the gloves, best I've ever had.

Not retro, it’s more the profile that should do well.
-
My money is on something Trott shaped.
-
I'd like to see a massive GM - all around 33mm from what I've largely seen for past few years- let's see something far more GN ish
-
Yep I’m in. Icon F2 profile with 2020 icon labels
Im also in for an Icon F2 Profile. Easily the best shape gm i have owned

GM 21 gear is supposed to be announced on November 11th, but a US Cricket store seems to be posting pictures and even a walkthrough video guide to it on Facebook. There's a silver bat, and a green bat. That's all I've seen with a cursory glance so far.
@Edward Lowy is there no embargo this year?
-
Which US cricket store?

Another one for the "if I get a big win on the scratchcards" list.
-
Chroma looks amazing. Great profile and nice looking labels
GM moving away from the Hex grip already. Might not have been popular. i love them personally
-
Can someone tell me what makes these different to any other bats on the market? Or different to previous GM offerings? Frankly all the shapes and profiles look the same to me it’s just a case of who has the prettiest stickers.
I suppose it’s difficult to produce something revolutionary with such tight design parameters but I can’t help but feel that annual new product releases are largely disappointing and are only contrived to draw more money from the cricket playing population. That my 10 cents anyway.
-
Think there's only so much you can do with bat design for the masses tbf. GM along with all brands are obviously appealing to the mass market, so have to have shapes which appeal to that audience.
A few companies have different ways, such as B3 I suppose. Bit essentially funky shapes don't appeal to enough people. Which is where a custom bat comes in I suppose
-
Chroma is 👌, it’s the shape of the player edition that all the Gm sponsored players use, and available in at least 404 grade up.
The new grips are very light, not sure of the exact weight. Just another offering they are giving the consumer. What’s not to like 🤷♂️

I didn’t measure the 808 I had seen but it was a very decent size.

I thought it looked like the Stokes shape on the US Cricket Facebook book video.

You’d still presume they’ll be a lot smaller then the PE’s though?

I can’t imagine GM would have been very happy nor would I imagine the majority of other GM retailers that followed the request to keep quite until GM released date.

Exactly, should think there is a posterior or two keeping the naughty step warm.

Those GM Zelos II have been out in Aus for a while. Pretty sure I saw some at GCCC a month ago.

Think so!
@Six Sixes Cricket get some pics up if you’re stock has dropped. I’m sure we’d all love to see them!

Great pics Rob :)
Are they essentially the same shape, just the Chroma a fuller profile and a bit less bowed maybe?
Loving the look of those
The chroma is the same full shape as some of the players bats, the Zelos has some concaving, more of a bow and a thicker toe
-
Have a 2-11 1/4 sig , 2-11 1/2 606 remaining and a 404 @ 2-10 3/4
Will order a couple more sigs in as well
-
I’d like a Chroma Signature 2.9 - 2.10 if you get one in pls
I can imagine they will be very popular.

Genuine question mate. Why do you like the thin toe?

Some of the Kookaburra range is out (or maybe all?!). Two ranges released, Kahuna and...the Beast is back...

just a preference, have always liked the duckbill shapes for balance and pickup

I’m absolutely livid Kookaburra have brought the Beast back like this. Awful.
-
Looks like more of the same from both Brands. Nothing remarkable or particularly innovative. Have we come to the plateau of bat design and innovation?
The Kahuna must be the longest continuously running Range out of the big brands, been going for at least 15 years now
-
Wow, the Beast bat doesn't even pretend to be like the old one. The softs do, a bit.
-
Have GM abandoned those new, erm, GM textured grips? Thought they felt good in the hand and one or pros even seemed to have even chosen to put them on non-GM bats.
-
Yeah shame on the beast, seen it last Wednesday before shut down. If you like big heavy bats Then the big beast is 👌
-

Thanks mate. I like a duckbill, but just interested around the 'thin toe' bit, as most are put off by them. So interesting to hear your view. 👍

Yes @billyb 👍
-
With the full profile I guess you have to lose what you can low down to try and help it feel nice. Having had a Stoke PE and Vince PE I was never a huge fan of the feel of the mid-low, full shape but the performance of them was top drawer. I clattered the toes a lot and there was barely a mark so GM do something magical on how they prepare them :D
You do, or sacrifice edge size obviously. Thinner toes don't bother me as much, but I know a lot don't like them so just found it interesting that people didn't mind them on these bats that was all. I like the shape though personally.
Saw someone mention the 'pro lite' grip or whatever its called earlier. Not sure what benefit that gives tbf, apart from maybe saving 0.5oz. We'll have featherlite binding & ultralite glue next! 😆
-
Have GM abandoned those new, erm, GM textured grips? Thought they felt good in the hand and one or pros even seemed to have even chosen to put them on non-GM bats.
Hope not, the Hex grip is the first that I've really liked and performed well.
I guess the new ultralight grips help differentiate 2021 bats and stockists could then swap over 2020's hex grips to ultralights and make their stock current again, for little cost.
-
So the new Salix bat called Amp is a minor range amendment, basically an AJK shape with cambered face.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CHNekhqhWOi/ (https://www.instagram.com/p/CHNekhqhWOi/)
As you were.
-
Were any of the GM 2020 ranges discontinued or it is just the two additions with everything from 2020 continuing?
-
All the range has continued.
Hex Grips are still available and on the siren/eclipse/icon models
-
Anything new from the smaller boutique brands?
H4L, RPC, B3, Red Ink, Blank Bats, Kippax etc?
-
I was also a fan of the hex grips. Glad to see that they haven't been discontinued

I seem to remember spotting one pictured on a Joe Root bat.
-

I think Woakes was using one as well when he made those second innings runs at old trafford.
-
disappointed by the Kooks Beast, they could have gone full retro like the bubble and would have been a big seller.
No doubt they will be continuing the Ghost, wondering if they will bother with the pace or shadow.
The keeping gear looks so much worse than the Aussie range, not sure why they try to make it so different. bring back the super green and the silvers
-
Got a 10+ grain 2'9 GM Chroma Signature ordered, can't wait to get it!

Left for me.
-
Left one.
As someone who is into my fourth decade buying cricket bats (having just squeezed my first one in before the end of the 1980s) my perception is they grading is becoming less generous. I have a grade 3 Duncan Fearnley from the 90s that aesthetically looks as good as some of the G1 bats you see today. The one brand that seems to buck that trend for me is GM. VFM wise they are the best on the market for me

Still some very generous grading available, particularly among the smaller boutique brands. Couldn't comment on the big boys as all my recent purchases have been from the smaller makers I've found via the forum.

It's all down the the willow supply, the demand is just out-stripping the supply. Even J S Wright's are pushing the benefits of less grainy clefts - https://www.instagram.com/p/CE40KmfhmqE/ (https://www.instagram.com/p/CE40KmfhmqE/)
I'd assume GM have their own willow supply which is why they can grade so generously.

I assume - but stand to be corrected if wrong - that trees still produce on average the same proportion of clefts across the impeccable to clefts-only-a-mother-could-love scale as has always been the case. I can appreciate that where demand for the best looking clefts increases, then the prices such bays will attract goes up. What it seems to me though is that many brands are now pushing into the G1 - or indeed the plethora of G1+ LE Players grades - category bats that wouldn't previously have been graded as such simply to charge more for them. GM is a brand that for me has been more honest with the customer
-
But we never did really get a convincing answer from Edward Lowry as to whether they graded on looks or performance? I think he ended up suggesting the good looking willow played better but could not say why.
There are several manufacturers (not GM) claiming to be the only ones with their own willow supply. They can't all be!
I like GMs transparency in making their own bats and not making for anyone else.
-
Didn’t he suggest that it was a mixture of looks and performance? That’s what I remember. I’m probably wrong.

I think he did, actually. A bit of a woolly explanation really. Why does a cricket bat need to be good looking anyway?

Kippax have always been a willow supplier haven’t they? Matt at H4l has his own supply as well. Don’t know about Salix, never really dealt with them.
There is also a few other willow suppliers that also make bats as well. Just Wrights are the biggest supplier

Chroma is great shape, thanks to GM for bringing this pro shape model in L555!!
-
I think he did, actually. A bit of a woolly explanation really. Why does a cricket bat need to be good looking anyway?
Commercial and customer demands... am sure we have discussed this before but the 'rejects' shelf that wasn't good enough for retailers as retailers claim they couldn't shift them due to aesthetics. These bats were given to sponsored players (junior or second team)... make of that what you will re 'pro willow'...
Ever since the GM visit and numerous great posts on here I don't feel the need to be getting 'pro bats'... but have to admit I do like a nice clean blade with narrow grains as much as anyone else...

Kook in February, Gn in March,
Thanks Rob, is that later than usual or am I just imagining that?
-
Yes later than normal, due to the covid situation. We were told the ranges were staying the same, but that has now changed. There is a delay with stock with kookaburra, there isn’t much available until February. Grays are dropping 4 new bats and a new range of softs for March

Not surprised tbh - with two of the most attractive batsmen in the world at the moment endorsing ranges completely different to what the 2020 season offerings were, I suspect that we will be seeing the Delta and Blue Maax. (Could just be me getting my hopes up, but if this is the case, I hope that the offerings are somewhat similar to what the players actually use!)
If this is the case, the Elite Retro we saw Billings use is almost a definite, which leaves room for a Powerbow 2021 model. 😂
-
Powerspot is still in the 2021 line up for the retro’s Chadders

My money on the 4 new GN bats would be -
Delta
Blue Maxx
Elite
AN other - maybe something else from Aus like the Ultra
This considering the Powerspot isn't new as it's already been relaunched.
The new softs will be interesting, I hope there are some decent gloves in there.

Phil Salt using the new Gray Nics, looked like a retro powerbow

Elite a step in right direction,Powerspot retro should be the classic Red with Gold spot on back
Is it me or all other GN artwork seemingly designed by a 7 year old with an iPad ?

Would have left the ultra stickers on the end, but it split so had to go 😬

Elite a step in right direction,Powerspot retro should be the classic Red with Gold spot on back
Is it me or all other GN artwork seemingly designed by a 7 year old with an iPad ?
I actually quite like the range - yes, a bit in your face, but I'm glad they moved away from the black backgrounds, and also stickers like the Gen X Powerbow - those were a bit too garish! Have a Delta and Blue Maax, and personally love the designs!
-
Always look forward to new duffle bag designs - haven’t seen any yet.

I got a fancy Shrey one and have been so unimpressed!

Hoping there really is an Elite coming back. If so, 2021 is taken care of. Will just need a four leaf clover and a yellow grip... #IfYouKnowYouKnow

Some of the new Kookaburra stuff is online. Looks lovely

have only seen the kahuna and beast so far, wasnt a fan of the keeping gear but got the aussie stuff over the winter anyway. quite like the beast profile but would prefer the retro stickers like the bubble and grays retro ranges
-
Have no beef with the undoubted quality from Robertsbridge, but the graphics and stickers have been squarely targeted at the younger demographic, and the outpouring of memory and love and emotion at past models on this topic, may suggest a slight imbalance.!?
Glad they are flourishing as a company, nonetheless

Are the not the company probably doing most retro models?

Going back to Newbery, I've just been looking at this "N-Series" stuff online. Putting the designs aside, there's zero mention about what willow is being used for these £99.99 bats.
https://newbery.co.uk/collections/n-series-range/products/n-series-senior-cricket-bat
I'm struggling to see how they'd be selling EW for £99.99 and the lack of description doesn't help, surely they're not flogging Kashmir?
-
And in expensive Taunton land, M&H have launched a shiny new range called the 'PS100'. I think there are bats, pads, and gloves. Kinda nightclub-chic?

Yep £800 of you want to be a FKW and £1000 if your a keeping FKW. Just stupidly priced but no doubt it will sell well to the private school brigade and M&H fans.
You could by two G1 bats and a G3 from me for the price of that bat

They're very expensive, but same kind of ballpark as a GM Players Edition, so reasonable by M&H standards. I really like the shape, reminds me of an SS LE that I had a while back - an absolute belter of a shape.

Popped in today to pick up some bits and could not resist a good look and some shadow batting with one of these.
Bloody lovely shape and pick up but the price makes it a non starter for me.
It’s got zero concaving and very on trend with the “pro shape”

Did you get any pics? I don't mind the stickers so much, and the shape looks pretty good. Agreed on the price though.
-
They look nowhere near that bright in the flesh.
Stickers are actually pretty cool to be fair.
No pics... I was too busy trying to resist buying one they had just put in the “bargain” section

Just wondering if any of the forum sponsors have had visibility (or knowledge of) any wicket keeping kit changes (or not so to speak) for 2021??

Grays have some new gloves coming out.
Kook similar in design to this season

Neon cricket launched their 2021 range at midnight last night
https://www.neoncricket.co.uk/ (https://www.neoncricket.co.uk/)
Some new gloves and a new pad design to last year. As well as a range of neon branded clothing. Neon must be one of the few brands that have launched new kit for 2021 after last year.
3 new colour ranges too. Absolutely love the Purple. But think the new Chrome will be a massive hit too
Well done as always @Neon Cricket

-
you would have thought the brand name being similar to 'shiny c@ck' was bad enough but they have raised the bar there for sure.... what next Goring Gloves, Himmler Helmet

Well that was a disturbing read to start my morning.
-
I know the swastika is actually a regularly used symbol in India too. Quite often see it on jockey’s silks in Indian horse racing.
-

Believe that's because it's a Hindu symbol rather than because of the Nazi associations it carries in Europe though.
-
Its the reverse swastika and it symbolises peace and prosperity.
I had to do a little research when I seen it everywhere there and wondered what I had stumbled into! The Hindus are disgusted by what it has come to represent and there have been several occasions of ignorant westerners, like myself, mistaking peaceful Indians for Nazis! Even violence and vandalism.
Not sure any of this accounts for the Hitler bat name! Very poor show
-
Yeah, really doesn't account for the Hitler bat name. Extraordinarily ignorant thing to do.
-
it gets worse:

the bat model is the Hitler 'Dictator'....... that takes away any 'misinterpretation' on the use of Hitler

So I've been checking the GN catalogue that Rob at @Six Sixes Cricket kindly sent over, and I really like the look of the Originals keeping gloves, pretty retro. I just noticed that they have a super funky palm though. Any idea what that is all about?

Looks like an extra layer of the grippy stuff - protrudes quite a bit so will be interesting to see what they’re like. Love the colours.

The omega keeping gloves had the same palm, nothing new from gray nics just another change of colour

I assume everyone knows that the Retro Beast is actually coming to the UK now? I'm looking forward to seeing how they look. 3DSports and Romida posted about it.
-
I got very excited about the new Jedi stickers today. Lovely.
(And their woolly hats)
Good bat maker too.

I like the way they do different quality levels with their retro range.

Yes! I just wish they were called Little Beast, Angry Beast, Wild Beast, and the Beast like the original! Think they look awesome though.

compare
much better pricing than the aussie versions as well £225 + shipping for the g4 version is pretty steep compared to £140 in the UK
-
I wonder if the Aussie ones are made in Oz and Uk ones maybe not?

Another shocking decision from Kookaburra uk
-
why such a bad decision? i can see that essentially having 2 versions of the same bat out at the same time is a very poor business decision but thats all i can think. they must be trying to horn in on the GN retro popularity
not saying you are wrong at all, as you know the industry better than the majority of us, interested in your opinion
would be really annoyed if i had bought the new version of the beast then they released the retro version
-
Poor as In they given it to Romida as an exclusive. I’m sure the rep said it was a limited amount given to then.
-
fair enough, arent 3dsports owned by Kookaburra? or at least in the same trading estate.
poor from kooks if they give an exclusive then backout on it
-
Poor as In they given it to Romida as an exclusive. I’m sure the rep said it was a limited amount given to then.
No way, an exclusive!?
-
Yes so kook don’t/won’t release anything in the uk that Kook Aus have, due to the uk usually being cheaper. Romida have been given x amount of bats, I think direct from Aus, but I’m not 100% sure where they are made
-
That is so weird, @Six Sixes Cricket, and a shame too. I reckon you would have shifted plenty of them on here!
-

True and I nearly bought it, on serious cricket, I think, but then changed mind, felt it was too low middle for me.
-
Yes I have some elite and ultimate in stock.
Not sure where the ultimate is listed as grade 3, both bat models are 5star. All have 6/7 clean straight grains
-
Sorry, I was on about Elite not Ultimate.

Talent Cricket. Someone asked them a question on the product page, and they responded by saying they are G3.
