Title: Heritage Cricket
Post by: Talisman on March 09, 2010, 08:58:50 AM
Would I be right in thinking that this new company with Podshaver Kieron Harris at the helm is a forum member?

eeek, you weren't supposed to find it that quick!
Yes, tis me, and just dreaming really at this stage, bit of a liberty calling myself a podshaver at this stage I know.

Been up a few weeks, at the moment I'm doing a few for friends so just a hobby really. Hoping I can get the chance to do more and more, so basically making to order really so i don't outlay too much!

Thanks Buzz, I appreciate that. Have to give the wife the credit for that really, athough i came up with the name.

Should also say i've really appreciated the help/advice this place has given me to give it a go a little. Not trying to take on the world or the great batmakers on here, happy to just keep practicing and make a few, but I really love it! :-)

behind every great man is a great woman - you have clearly started well!!
or is that Behind every great man is a woman rolling her eyes??!!

To a degree a bit of both. Of course it's only my opinion with each one, but I prefer the bat to play well rather than look perfect. As I say it's just a hobby I'm hoping to be able to develop more and more and learn, and I didn't want to say too much as i've been practicing, and as I was a little scared of being told they are rubbish! I hope they aren't though.

Graded on performance?

Do you grade the bat before making it or after you've made it?

Sorry, out of sync somehow but reply above.
Would value your opinion Andy, as one of the people I'm aspiring to on the forum, would happily send one to you to take a look at, give some feedback on?

this bit....? "I prefer the bat to play well rather than look perfect"

You'd probably be better off sending a bat to Talisman to look at he's seen more bats then you can shake a stick at!
Title: Re: Heritage Cricket

I don't really mind if the grains are not completely straight or if there are 10+ grains, etc, but I want it to feel and play well, that is the most important thing to me, how well it performs for the individual. Obviously in an ideal world it would look and play great, but I want to get to the stage where you are getting the best performance possible from each piece of willow and allow the player to get the most out of it. Hope that makes sense?

OK, talisman would you like to take a look (please be kind!) ?
Title: Re: Heritage Cricket
Post by: Jamieh on March 09, 2010, 10:37:18 AM
Sorry. I try to do both, but my aim is to get it as good as I can when finished, so for example if I have a piece that is not great looking and feels a little heavy before hand then it would start out a lower grade based on that, but I will try to get the best from it and will reassess when complete, of course it may stay the same or even get lower. I am certainly not claiming to get it perfect, but trying to do the best I can and learn a skill I think is great, and at this stage make something that I am happy to use.

Obviously I'm stil learning more and more as i go and at the very early stages, so any advice appreciated.

I like the aircraft branding - is there a RAF connection in there somewhere - are you based near Coningsby perhaps?

As I write this I'm sat next to a Typhoon Front Fuse production line!

Post by: Jamieh on March 09, 2010, 11:46:15 AM
Ha Ha, yes, bit of an aeroplane fan (another hobby of mine!) and from an RAF family, and yes, not far from coningsby! Was kind of aiming for a traditional (spitfire) and modern (tyhoon) bat hence the names, thanks for the positive feedback.

Front fuse, very cool! would love to have a look at that! BAE?

yes, I work for BAE currently based in the Typhoon Major Unit Assembly shed at Samlesbury (though the nature of my job means I move office every few months - will be working on F-35 from April)

I'd thought of adapting aircraft names for a cricket brand before - there's some cracking names - Lightning, Hawk etc..

Sounds awesome, can I visit, ha ha? The F35, superb, that's the new jump jet isn't it?

Yes, lots of good aeroplane names, and my favourite would probably be the harrier!

Not been to that KFC in a long time, but yes I know the one you mean.

Of course, being the finely tuned athlete that I am, I know longer partake in the offerings of Colonel ;p

Not familiar with that golf course.

Anyway, Heritage Bats.....

confused, you grade on weight?
Title: Re: Heritage Cricket
Post by: Tom on March 09, 2010, 02:09:04 PM
Sounds like he grades initially on cleft weight and looks. Then performance after the bat is made.

<my puzzled look> It says

"not great looking and feels a little heavy before......"  "start out a lower grade based on that"

then

"will reassess when complete, of course it may stay the same or even get lower"

lower weight I assume  ???

Hey ho though doesn't really matter
Title: Re: Heritage Cricket
Post by: Jamieh on March 09, 2010, 02:19:15 PM
No, sorry I meant the grade may change after it's been made. So I grade initially, and after I've completed I regrade based on the performance (as tom says), hoping that I've made the best I can of the willow, in which case there is a chance to grade up, but of course the grade "may stay the same or even get lower".

Wow you're up and running fast wasn't long ago that you were thinking of starting was it?

I like the layout of the website its user friendly, simple and easy to navigate. The design of your branding is very traditional, im not saying this is a bad thing, but do you think it will narrow your market?

Also I think the prices of your bats are too high . . .for a new brand in a very competitive market, you should perhaps think of a lower entry price, then once you have a built up the brand and a customer base to increase the price. Im not trying to criticise you by any means, but £180 for your LE you are up against the likes of a Redback premium, H4L, SAF etc

Just my 2 pennies worth mate :)

Cool, thanks for the feedback guys, and agree too! :-)

Could be right about narrowing the market being traditional and will keep that in mind, i guess I have just gone with something I like but appreciate it wont be for everyone.

Will be starting slow, and will make the changes you suggest especially price wise as I'm mainly just trying to sell one to make another for now, and just want to get better with each one. Certainly not in the same league as the other guys, but got to start somewhere I guess, and have just loved learning and making bats for friends mainly so far.

I know what you mean Kieran its just the first step on a long ladder, this time next year I will be in the same position as you so im just thinking of the obstacles and pitfalls that will lay in front of me, which will be varied and numerous that I have no doubt about.

But if your product and service are top notch that is a great foundation combine that with sticking by your beliefs then you cant really go wrong!
